‘CONTES’
AN ACCOUNT OF A WOMAN’S JOURNEYthrough HAITI, RWANDA
and UGANDA

Port-au-Prince, Haiti. As I walked through the devastation of a seven magnitude earthquake,
I was moved by the strength and resilience of the blue door standing in the rubble.I imagined that in time the Haitian people would open the door and find that
life, peace and beauty had triumphed once again.
Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A self-portrait of a young man, a member of a community of local
Haitian artisans.
Jacmel, Haiti. Vines now cover many of the homes throughout the region, but the endurance of the people and the natural beauty of Haiti
have emerged from behind the devastation.Antoure, from the Haitian Creole word meaning ‘shrouded,’ surrounded.
Resilient, resourceful, proud and beautiful. Women may be poverty’s greatest victims, but they are also one of
its greatest antidotes.
Bottle Brush Tree. Another example of nature’s brillianceproviding inspiration for simple solutions and human ingenuity.
Callista, from the botanical name Callistemon.
Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Lavender Cross was painted within a community of Haitian artisans.
The canvas used was a piece of scrap metal salvaged after the earthquake. From debris and refuse comes beauty and hope.
Lake Victoria, Uganda. She wore a broad smile and spoke proudly of her earned place in the market. She survives on less than a dollar a day, but she works towards her dream of one
day owning her own store. She is a survivor and an inspiration, and every day I strive to walk in her footsteps.
The orchid recalls the relentless struggle for the renewal of the human spirit. It hides deep within the bare and woody stem, but then once again,
brilliant petals of life unfold from deep within.
A symbol of persistence and courage. Like the Koi, we prevailagainst the current of adversity while remaining true to our purpose.
Jacmel, Haiti. A quiescent coffee scale remains suspended, but each morningthe tradesman comes to oil its hinges and to wipe away the rust that had worked its way in overnight. Like many, he holds hope that today will be the beginning of
a new economy for Haiti.
Lake Victoria, Uganda. He arrived early to be the first to select from the morning catch, but he became captivated by the performance of a local theater group
promoting HIV/AIDS awareness. He was so moved by the emotion in the singing and dancing that he left his business and quickly made his way to a screening clinic.
The web of life inspired the intricate ironwork contrasted herewith the simple brilliance of a morning sky.
