BIRTHDAY FUND COLLECTION (BFC) is a major annual “event” for our parish. In the early years, when Holy Redeemer Parish was struggling to establish a viable ministry and adequate facilities, parishioners joined together for a

number of fund-raising projects. Eventually, people decided it made more sense just to contribute money – equivalent to the hours worked at the festival and the dollars spent on meals and booths. Please use the special envelope in the envelope box for your donations. Help our church to celebrate its 70th birthday and to strengthen its ministry. This year’s fund will be used to help pay for renovations to the conference room, connector, and offices.

BOOK CLUB: The next book club meeting will

be on June 12 at 6:45 p.m. Our selection this month

is “The End of Alzheimer’s” by Dr. Dale

Bredesen. For further information, contact Linda

Kuenning at 419-302-2223. All are welcome. BIBLE TIMELINE STUDY: Session 22 (The Church – Part2) will be June 14 (7:45 p.m.) or June 16 (9:30 a.m.). Read the suggested verses from the Acts. And to go deeper, answer the questions in the book and read what is recommended. If you have not already done so, sign-up for Remind (@hrBible) and subscribe to our YouTube page: “Holy Redeemer Catholic Church”. Links to all of Fr Dorn’s notes and lesson videos can be found on our website (www.hrcatholic.org) on the social media page.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. Is the kingdom of your soul divided? We are often confronted with choices that appear to be good but in essence are not. We struggle with choosing good over evil and right from wrong. Conflicts often exist within, and we walk through life with a divided heart. We realize what is needed to live with God but find ourselves doing the exact opposite. As we gather with our brothers and sisters and seek God’s gift of Christ in the Eucharist, may we not only be united with one another in faith but united with God within. All conflicts and divisions can cease, and we can act with a focused, strong, and determined heart.

HOLY REDEEMER STEPHEN MINISTRIES So, how can the Stephen Ministry Help?

The Stephen Series is a caring ministry with trained Care Givers ministering to those

seeking help in various situations. These Care Receivers may find they would like to

receive Christian help when dealing with some of life’s issues. The Care Givers will

minister to members of our parish who are dealing with bereavement, are hospitalized

or convalescing, homebound, a resident of a long-term care facility, chronically ill,

disabled or terminally ill, or the caretaker for an ill or disabled patient. Other areas of

ministry might include parish members dealing with miscarriage, coping with

infertility, or dealing with adoption issues. Family changes can also require a caring

lay person’s help. This could include those newly married, separated or divorced, remarried, a single parent,

dealing with a child with exceptional challenges, or a new baby. When a parishioner’s job is terminated or

relocated, or he or she is starting a new job or retiring, a Care Giver’s help may prove beneficial. The more people

we have equipped to share Christ’s love, the more we will be able to grow this ministry.

Please prayerfully discern if you are being called to help those in need in any way. For more information, contact

Linda Kuenning at 419-302-2223 or Ellen Topp at 419-733-4440.

Matter of Perspective Three priests sat discussing the best positions for prayer while a telephone repairman worked nearby… "Kneeling is definitely best," claimed one… "No," another contended. "I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven." … “You're both wrong," the third insisted. "The most effective prayer position is lying prostrate, face down on the floor." … The repairman could contain himself no longer. "Hey, fellas,” he interrupted, "the best prayin' I ever did was hangin' upside down from a telephone pole."

MASS SCRIPTURE READINGS & REFLECTIONS

This Week – June 10 – Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading – Exodus 24:3-8

“This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words of his.” (Ex 24:8b)

After receiving the law at Mount Sinai, Moses sealed God’s covenant by sprinkling the blood of young slain bulls on the

people and on the altar he erected. What do you think was the meaning of this ritual?

Second Reading – Hebrews 9:11-15

For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant. (Heb 9:15a)

Hebrews speaks of Jesus as the “mediator of a new covenant” because his blood sacrifice brought eternal redemption for

all believers. How is this a compelling explanation for the cross of Christ?

Gospel Reading – Mark 14:12-16, 22-26

He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.” (Mk 14:24)

Today, we hear Mark’s account of the institution of the Eucharist. Jesus speaks to the disciples about the Passover meal’s

bread and wine as his body and blood which “will be shed for many.” How do you think the disciples reacted to this

revelation?

Next Week – June 17 – Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading - Ezekiel 17:22-24:

Birds of every kind shall dwell beneath it, every winged thing in the shade of its boughs. (Ez 17:23b)

The prophet Ezekiel hears this “proverb” of the Lord (the restoration of Israel) while in exile in Babylon around 570 BC.

How do you think the captive Israelites reacted to Ezekiel’s words?

Second Reading – 2 Corinthians 5:6-10:

Yet we are courageous, and we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord. (2 Cor 5:8)

Paul speaks of Christians being “courageous.” How does your faith give you strength and confidence?

Gospel Reading – Mark 4:26-34:

“This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land… Of its own accord the land

yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.” (Mk 4:26, 28-29)

Why do you think Jesus often spoke about the Kingdom of God by using parables?

NEW PARISHIONERS, WELCOME! Please call the Parish Office at 419-629-2543 to register. A census form needs to be completed. Forms are available at the office, in the media rack in the church entrance, or on our website at www.hrcatholic.org. Married children or children that have moved should register separately from their parents. PHONE/INFO UPDATE/ ADDRESS CHANGE: Call the parish office or email [email protected] with updates, so we can keep our records current. ADDITIONAL BLANK ENVELOPES are located at the Welcome Desk and media rack. These envelopes can be used if you forgot your envelopes, are a guest, or don’t currently have envelopes.

Question: Why do we celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the month of June?

Answer: Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an ancient practice. We can see its Scriptural origins in Jesus’ own references to His Heart. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest … for I am meek and humble of heart” (c.f. Matthew 11:28, 29). The devotion received a surge of popularity in the late 1600s. Jesus appeared several times to a French religious sister, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, pointing to his heart. During this time, the Jansenist heresy had risen in France, which preached limited predestination for salvation. When appearing to Margaret Mary, Jesus affirmed his love for all mankind: “Behold the Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing.” He asked for a special feast celebrating his Sacred Heart on the Friday following the feast of Corpus Christi. Over time, June has become known as the month of the Sacred Heart. If you have questions about what we do at Mass, please send an e-mail to [email protected] for explanation in a future bulletin.

GOSPEL MEDITATION – June 10, 2018 – Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II noted that the family “is the cradle of life and love” (On the Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus!

In today’s Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus’ large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is “brother” or “sister.” The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus’ preaching, and they are not amused. “They set out to seize him, for they said, ‘He is out of his mind.’” To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It’s a mess by any standards.

The family’s perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus’ bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family!

Jesus’ words to his family can seem controversial. “Who are my mother and my brothers?” Yet Jesus knows what he is about. He has always known he would be about the business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to “do the will of God.”

Please join us at one of these times to learn more about following Christ through the example of Mary. JUNE 12: ANNULMENT INFORMATIONAL SESSION | 7:00 p.m. Many Catholics are hurting because of their marital situations. Some are divorced and remarried

outside of the Catholic Church. Some are married to a divorced person. Many families have parents, children, grandchildren who are divorced and are concerned about their relationship with the Catholic Church. Can anything be done for these individuals? In many cases, the Catholic Church provides a solution through the Declaration of Nullity process. For others, information is all that is needed to help get an understanding of the Church’s teachings and get them on the path to reconciliation. This program is an opportune time to deal with these hurting situations. Tuesday June 12, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This event will be held on the first floor in the gathering space (wheel chair accessible). Jean Borgert Procurator/Advocate for the Tribunal will be speaking on the Declaration of Nullity process. For more information, please call the Shrine at 419- 925-4532 or Jean Borgert at 937-658-6132.

AS SCHOOL COMES TO A CLOSE and people begin thinking of summer vacations, we should not forget about our obligation to attend Mass wherever we are. People can check out the web site for the Mass times at www.masstimes.org

NOTE TO ALL WHO HELP WITH MASS…Our summer schedules may be distracting us from our

ministry schedules. Please check to see what dates you are assigned to assist with Mass. If you are

not available to help out on a particular date, please find a substitute or let the parish know ahead of

time. If you need a schedule, please check the website, media rack, or call the parish office.

Feast Days, Holidays, & Memorials June 10 to June 17: 10 – Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time St. Ephrem, Deacon & Doctor of the Church 11 – St. Barnabas, Apostle 13 – St. Anthony of Padua, Priest & Doctor of the Church 14 – Flag Day 17 – Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time Father’s Day

DID YOU KNOW? Holy Redeemer has a media and

technology group called The Digital Disciples.

Started in 2016, this group manages all things “techy” at the Church. This includes the website, social media, audio / video, hardware, and software. We are currently looking for new members (both committee members and those willing to help out). Have you ever wanted to work on a website, write a blog for the church, or help with live streaming? This would be the group for you! Please contact Brad at [email protected] or 419-629-2543 if interested or have questions.

“St. Anthony, St. Anthony, come around! Something’s lost that

must be found!” Did you learn this rhyme in childhood? St.

Anthony of Padua is more than the patron saint for lost items.

By his life, he shows a special interest in lost souls. St. Anthony

was born to noble parents, but he preferred a simple life of faith

to the riches of his childhood. He joined the Franciscan order in

1220. He quickly became known for his eloquence in preaching.

He had a way of reaching all sorts, from nobles to clergy to those

who had fallen away from the Catholic faith. In addition to

preaching, St. Anthony organized supplies for the poor and

negotiated release for prisoners of war between Italian city-

states. However, you or your loved ones feel lost this week, pray

for St. Anthony’s intercession!

PARISH NEWS & UPDATES:

We will begin praying the Vocations prayer as a part of the Rosary before Mass.

For anyone involved in one of the Liturgical Ministries, we will be testing new scheduling software soon. Watch your emails for more information. This new software will allow us more flexibility in scheduling, allow you to set your unavailable dates, email or text reminders, a better way to request subs, and much, much more.
