Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.

Solemnity of All Saints — November 1st This week the Church celebrates all the saints: canonized or beatified, and the multitude of those who are in heaven enjoying the beatific vision that are only known to God. During the early centuries the Saints venerated by the Church were all martyrs. Later on the Popes set November 1 as the day for commemorating all the Saints. We all have this "universal call to holiness." What

must we to do in order to join the company of the saints in heaven? We "must follow in His footsteps and conform [our]selves to His image seeking the will of the Father in all things. [We] must devote [our]selves with all [our] being to the glory of God and the service of [our] neighbor. In this way, the holiness of the People of God will grow into an abundant harvest of good, as is admirably shown by the life of so many saints in Church history" (Lumen Gentium, 40). Don't forget to pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory from November 1 to the 8th.

All Saints Day During the year the Church celebrates one by one the feasts of the saints. Today she joins them all in one festival. In addition to those whose names she knows, she recalls in a magnificent vision all the others "of all nations and tribes standing before the throne and in sight of the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands, proclaiming Him who redeemed them in His Blood." The feast of All Saints should inspire us with tremendous hope. Among the saints in heaven are some whom we have known. All lived on earth lives like our own. They were baptized, marked with the sign of faith, they were faithful to Christ's teaching and they have gone before us to the heavenly home whence they call on us to follow them. The Gospel of the Beatitudes, read today, while it shows their happiness, shows, too, the road that they followed; there is no other that will lead us whither they have gone.

All Souls Day — November 2nd The fundamental idea of All Souls Day is the acknowledgement of human frailty. Since very few people achieve perfection in this life, going to our graves with traces of sinfulness. Some period of purification seems necessary before a soul comes face to face with God. The Council of Trent (The Council existed from 1545 to 1563 with the purpose of clarifying doctrines of the Church and the execution of a thorough reform of the inner life of the Church by removing the numerous abuses that had developed in it) affirmed this purgatory state and insisted that the prayers of the living can speed the process of purification. Based on the doctrine that the souls of the faithful which at death have not been cleansed from the temporal punishment due to venial sins (less serious sin that weakens our relationship with God), or have not fully purged from attachment to mortal sins (serious sin that breaks our relationship with God), cannot attain the beatific vision (the eternal and direct visual perception of God enjoyed by those who are in Heaven, imparting supreme happiness or blessedness), and they may be helped to do so by prayer and by the sacrifice of the Mass. In other words, in our prayers, we are hoping to release them from Purgatory (which is a condition or process of purification in which souls of those who die in a state of grace are made ready and achieve the holiness necessary to enter heaven). Purgatory is often thought of as a terrible holding place that one’s soul goes to while awaiting judgment, but Purgatory is actually more of a process of preparation, both spiritually and emotionally. Think about Purgatory this way: when you are in darkness and step out and see the bright sun shine or bright light, instead of it being a wonderful experience we are often blinded and it causes us discomfort. This is what it would be like if we all of a sudden came face to face with the brilliance of God. So it is necessary for us to go through the process of Purgatory so that when we finally are in heaven and in the presence of God it is a joyous and pleasant experience and we ourselves are worthy of being in God’s presence.

Things to Do: Visiting a cemetery and praying for the dead during the Octave of All Saints' Day (November 1 through November 8) will gain a plenary indulgence that can be applied only to the souls in purgatory. On other days, this work gains a partial indulgence.

Spend a little time after Mass thanking God for all the unnamed saints, some of whom could be our own relatives.

Have a special meal and if you have young children have them dress up like saints and play games. Pray the Litany of the Saints -- you could make it really special by chanting it ("he who sings prays twice") and you could read an

explanation of this litany, which is considered the model of all other litanies. www.catholicculture.org

ON NEW SEATING ASSIGNMENTS, AND SEEING Copywright 2018 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

So a new guy started at my workplace a few days ago. My new boss, actually. I was on the interview team, so I’d met him before. Along with four or five others, I interviewed the candidate one-on-one, then each of the team members was asked to go to a 3rd party portal online somewhere to put our comments down about the person. We used to share such feedback as a group around the table. I preferred this to the portal, because then I could hear everyone’s take and share my own as we came to a consensus regarding the proposed new person. Now I just put my comments into the portal and that’s that. I had issues with several of the previous candidates, and apparently others did, too, because none of them were extended an offer. I entered several posi ve comments about this new guy, though, and others must have as well, because like I said, he started the other day. And right a er I learned he’d accepted the offer a few weeks prior, I learned that I had to move my desk… Yeah. Because of who reports to who now that we’ve finally hired a Director of QA, senior management deemed it best to mix up the sea ng to keep the teammates of each team in closer proximity to one another. In truth, I’ll be shi ing only four feet or so to the le , but building maintenance has to first restructure the cubicle walls to put me on the opposite side of the wall where I am now. I have no problem with the move, but as it was announced to me and to the other managers, I just couldn’t picture it, you know? Even a er one of my colleagues drew a schema c of the new desk alignments on the erasable wall.

I was studying the schema c intently when another colleague--obviously concerned for me--said, “John, are you OK with this?” I said “Yes,” but added that I s ll couldn’t see it. I felt like the only visually-challenged person in the room, because I was. “Look,” I said, “I can write you a sonnet in ten minutes, but visualizing in open space is not one of my skill sets.” Yet not so, perhaps, Bar maeus, the blind man in today’s Gospel. Blind, at least, at the beginning of the passage. He is si ng on the side of the road in Jericho, and when he hears that Jesus is passing by, he calls out, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” Many tell him to be quiet but he calls out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me.” Jesus stops and tells his disciples to call the blind man. They do, so Bar maeus throws aside his cloak and goes to Jesus. “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asks. “Master, I want to see,” he says, promp ng Jesus to say in return, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he gains his sight, but here’s the funny thing, he doesn’t go his way. Instead, he follows Jesus. Which was perhaps his inten on all along as he called out to the man of God passing by. Per an interes ng quote o en a ributed to Jonathon Swi “Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” I like that. It didn’t help me in trying to visualize my new desk loca on. In fact, I was on the other end of that s ck. But Bar maeus had vision in spades. He couldn’t physically see, true, but he had eyes of faith and look where this took him. We should all be so blind. And so visionary.
