MEMPHIS ANNOUNCED $10 MILLIONGIFT TO ATHLETICS

President Brad Mar n and Athle cs Director Tom Bowen announced Dec. 2 that alumni Bill and Nancy Laurie have made an extraordinary gi to the University of Memphis. Their $10 million contribu on to the capital campaign for athle cs facili es is the single-larg-est philanthropic gi in the history of the athle cs department, and the second-largest gi ever in the 100-year history of the university. Bill and Nancy Laurie are both graduates of the University of Memphis (then known as Mem-phis State University). Bill was a star ng guard on the Memphis State basketball team that played in the 1973 NCAA championship game. They are passionate philanthropists and have given numer-ous gi s in support of the arts, athle cs and edu-ca on. By securing the $10 million lead gi , the ath-le cs department leadership has reached a signif-icant benchmark in the capital campaign. Mem-phis has already secured 25 percent of the funds necessary to reach its goal of $40 million, less than 120 days a er the plan was unveiled by President Mar n. All capital campaign funds have been dedi-cated to athle cs facili es on the Uof M’s Park Av-enue Campus. The plan calls for construc on of a new men’s basketball prac ce and training facility, an indoor football prac ce complex and a so ball clubhouse, which includes indoor ba ng areas. It will addi onally fund comprehensive up-grades and renova ons to exis ng facili es, such as FedExPark and the Hardin Family Sports Com-plex. The upgrades will include improvements in common-use facili es that benefi t each of the Tigers 18 athle cs programs.
