Everytimeyoutalkto,rock,singto,andtouchyourbaby,youarehelpinghisbraindevelop.Theneuronsinyourbaby’sbrainareconnectingandbecomingpathways.

Therearemanythingsthatanewbornbabycanalreadydo:

Focusonfacesthatarewithineightinchesofherface;Recognizeyourvoiceandturnhisheadtowardthesoundofyourvoice;Respondtobeingtouched;Suck;

Yawn,sneeze,andhiccup;Graspthingsthatareplacedinherhands;andCommunicatewithcrying.

Bythetimeachildisthreeyearsold,thebrainhasformedonethousandtrillionconnections—abouttwiceasmanyasadultshave.Somebraincells,calledneurons,arehardwiredtoothercellsbeforebirth.Theycontrolthebaby’sheartbeat,breathing,andreflexesandregulateotherfunctionsessentialtosurvival.Therestofthebrainconnectionsarewaitingtobe“hookedup.”Theconnectionsthatneuronsmakewithotherneuronsarecalledsynapses.Onesinglebraincellcanbeconnectedtomorethantenthousandothercells.Whilepartsofthebraindevelopatdifferentrates,studyafterstudyhasshownthatthepeakproductionperiodforsynapsesisfrombirthtoaboutage10.Duringthistime,thebrain’sweighttriplestonearlyadultsize.Scientistsbelievethestimulationthatbabiesandyoungchildrenreceivedetermineswhichconnectionsforminthebrain.

HowDoestheBrainKnowWhichConnectionstoKeep?

Thisiswhereearlyexperiencecomesintoplay.Throughrepetition,brainconnectionsbecomepermanent.Conversely,aconnectionthatisnotusedatall,oroftenenough,isunlikelytosurvive.Forexample,achildwhoisrarelyspokentoorreadtointheearlyyearsmayhavedifficultymasteringlanguageskillslateron.Or,achildwhoisrarelyplayedwithmayhavedifficultywithsocialadjustmentasshegrows.Achild’sbrainthrivesonfeedbackfromhisenvironment.Thebrainwiresitselfintoathinkingandemotionalorganthatisformedbywhatthechildexperiences.Chancesareachildwhohasalanguage-richenvironmentwilllearntospeakverywell.Ababywhosecoosaremetwithsmilesratherthanapathywilllikelybecomeemotionallyresponsive.

Thecarethataninfantreceiveswillhavedefinitiveandlong-lastingeffectsonhowhewilldevelopandlearn,copewithstress,andmanagehisemotions.Babiesthrivewhentheyreceivewarm,responsiveearlycare.
