MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN,COUNCIL OF ADMINISTRATION

Dear patron,

It has been a proud privilege for me to pen-down this annual column for NITRA, one of thefour leading textile research associations in the country. NITRA, as you all know, has beenproviding R&D and other technical support to Indian textile and clothing industry since itsinception in 1974. The pursuit for excellence is still on and the organization is growing at asteady pace. NITRA’s esteemed patrons, valued clientele and efficient workforce deserveimmense credibility for this.

Friends, The Indian textiles & clothing industry had a mixed bag of fortune during the fiscal2015-16. The overall textile exports from India, though marginally dipped and stood at $40billion as compared to $41.4 billion in the previous year, fared pretty well considering thepoor condition of market as a result of global slowdown, and vis-à-vis the performance ofother sectors on the export front. Furthermore, successive droughts have reduced thesupply from India, world leader in cotton production.

In spite of the above, I feel the future for the Indian textile industry looks promising, buoyedby both strong domestic consumption as well as export demand. With consumerism anddisposable income on the rise, the retail sector has experienced a rapid growth in the pastdecade with the entry of several international players like Marks & Spencer, Guess andNext into the Indian market. All these, I am sure, clubbed with probable surge in demand inthe coming days, will give a boost to Govt. of India’s Make in India and Skill India programs.

While talking about NITRA, I feel happy to inform that during the reported period NITRAscientists have carried out 12 R&D projects, 4 completed and 8 in the pipeline. The otheractivities of NITRA i.e. technical consultancy and material quality evaluation have also beenquite satisfactory during the last one year. The financial performance showed noticeableimprovement during the year.

Amongst its training activities, it is a matter of satisfaction that NITRA has been approvedby Textile Committee (Resource Support Agency i.e. RSA), Mumbai as assessment agencyfor assessing ISDS trainees. Furthermore, NITRA is approved by Textile Sector Skill Councilto conduct Training of Trainers programs under PMKVY scheme. NITRA is also runningshort term programs approved by Apparel Sector Skill Council. In order to skill and employthe youth of Uttar Pradesh, the Uttar Pradesh Skill Development Mission (UPSDM) islaunched. Two programs i.e. Industrial Sewing Machine Operators (ISMO) and ApparelQuality Assurance & Compliance (AQAC) are successfully running under UPSDM Projectat NITRA.

NITRA’s academic wing NITRA Technical Campus, established in 2011-12, has also grownup steadily during the reported period and successfully conducting three 4 year B. Techprograms on Textile Technology, Textile Chemistry, and Computer Science & Engineering.All the programs are affiliated to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow andapproved by AICTE. The first batch of students has passed out with excellent results and isplaced in various reputed textile and IT companies around the length and breadth of thecountry.

To conclude, I thank the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the U.P. State Government,industries, various para-military agencies and others who have utilized NITRA’s facilitiesfor the support and encouragement given to us. I, in the capacity of being the ChairmanNITRA, assure that, NITRA would continue to serve the Indian Textiles & Clothing industryfor its holistic and continuous development in the years to come.

Quality Evaluation at NITRA Laboratories

Altogether 10870 samples were tested at NITRA’s NABL accredited laboratories during2015-16. Following is the laboratory-wise break up for the same:

In addition to above, 17 fabric defect/damage analysis and technical opinions were carriedout in various NITRA laboratories. In addition to this, 546 R&D sampels were also tested inPQE and CQE labs.

Publications

In the year under review, 24 research & technical papers are published/ presented intechnical journals and forums. In addition to that, 02 issues of NITRA e-Bulletin were alsouploaded.

Powerloom Service Centres

In order to strengthen the decentralized powerloom sector, NITRA rendered various valueadded services through eight Power Loom Service Centres located at Tanda, Kanpur, Meerut,Gorakhpur, Varanasi (all in U.P.), Panipat (Haryana), Ludhiana (Punjab) and Bhilwara(Rajasthan). Power Loom Service Centre at Varanasi has been shifted to Zila Udyog KendraCampus, Lahartara, Varanasi from IITH Campus. Arrangements of infrastructure facilitiesfor training, testing etc. are being established.

ORGANISATION : MEMBERSHIP & FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

NITRA Membership

As on 31st March,16, 110 textile and garment units have registered as NITRA members.The list of members is given in Annex-4.

Government Grant

Ministry of Textile, Govt. of India deserves special thanks for helping Association byreleasing timely grant for recurring expenditure. MoT released a grant of Rs.110.45 lacs.Rs.104.18 lacs was released for R&D projects. NITRA received grant of Rs.128.25 lacsfrom Office of the Textile Commissioner, Mumbai for continuing the activities of PowerLoom Service Centres at Tanda, Meerut, Ludhiana, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Panipat, Bhilwara& Varanasi.

NITRA received Rs. 169.21 lacs grant for PLSC Varanasi Centre and Rs. 287.00 lac grantwas received for CoE Focussed Incubation Centre (FIC) from Office of Textile Commissioner,Mumbai.

Council of Administration

The management of the Association is entrusted to the Governing Council. At the 39th

Annual General Meeting of the Association held on 24th September, 2015, the new Councilof Administration was constituted as given in Annex-1. The Council met four times duringthe year.

Finance & Administrative Sub-committee

The Finance & Administrative Sub-Committee continued to look into the administrativeand financial matters. All matters relating to administrative procedures, staff, matters relatingto the Members of Association and financial matters were brought before this Committeefor discussion, guidance and approval. This Committee met twice during this period. A listof members of Finance & Administrative Sub-Committee is given in Annex-2.

Research Advisory Committee

Research Advisory Committee meeting was held on Dec 9, 2015 at NITRA, Ghaziabad.This is an annual event at NITRA with a view to assess the progress of NITRA’s ongoingR&D projects and to make necessary modification on those, if required. The committeealso suggests areas to be considered for NITRA’s future R&D activities.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

As a policy matter, the aim for NITRA’s research and development activities is to help theindustry. So, at NITRA, ideas for most of the R & D projects are conceived only afterinteraction with the industry. Need based projects are earmarked for carrying out researchand special emphasis is given to those projects which have industry acceptance as wellas commercial viability.

In the year 2015-16, NITRA worked on twelve projects. Out of which four have beensuccessfully completed during the period whilst work is in progress for the eight projects.Three R&D projects have been sanctioned recently by the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. ofIndia.

Work done in the area of R&D during the year 2015-2016 is categorized as below :

1. GOVERNMENT SPONSORED PROJECTS

1.1 Completed projects

(i) Project title : Designing a compressed air monitoring system to optimizeenergy consumption in a textile mills (Sponsored by Ministryof Textiles, Govt. of India)

Objectives : • To quantify the losses occurred due to compressed air leakage

• To assess the real-time performance of the compressors• Development of the software for identification of

compressed air losses

Research outcome: • Compressed air monitoring system has been designedand as a pilot trial, it has been installed at NITRA for furtherstudies. Designed system installed at NITRA pilot plant.

Features of Central Compressed Air Monitoring System :

• Collects data from all the stations, where it is installed.• The data is logged into a database at regular intervals• Provision to set alarm limits of each parameter.• Every alarm event is logged into database.• Report generation.

Software Features :

• Datalogging interval – 1 ~ 99mins• Real time data of all the stations shall be displayed on computer screen.• Reports can be generated date wise for all the stations or for individual station.• Reports can be generated in excel data sheet which can be utilized for further

(ii) Project title : Development of specialty embroidery yarn for application instretchable fabrics, like knitted fabrics (Sponsored by Ministryof Textiles, Govt. of India)

Objectives : • To develop multi-component embroidery thread for stretchfabric.

• To produce multi-component embroidery thread usingelastane filament, water soluble PVA fiber and polyesteror viscose as sheath fiber on DREF-3 m/c.

• To carry out various types of embroidery with multi-component thread and normal embroidery thread onknitted fabrics.

• To compare how multi-component embroidery threadand normal embroidery thread affects the stretchabilityof the fabric.

Research outcome : • Hand Embroidery and Machine Embroidery was carriedout on stretchable knitted fabric using developedstretchable embroidery thread and normal embroiderythread. The embroidery samples were washed andevaluated for their stretch ability at the embroidery area.

• There is a gain of about 16 - 18 % in stretch ability at theportion of embroidery in Wales wise direction and about13 - 15% in Course wise direction using developed multi-component embroidery thread as compared to normalembroidery thread.

• The performance of the developed embroidery thread atmachine embroidery (high speed multi-head embroiderymachine) is not very much satisfactory (higher breakages)as compared to normal embroidery thread because oflower strength and higher unevenness and imperfectionsdue to the use of friction spinning technology. Thedeveloped embroidery thread was given surface finishwith silicon oil, which slightly reduces the breakage rateat embroidery machine.

• In case of hand embroidery the performance of developedembroidery thread given surface finish with silicon oil wassatisfactory and almost at par with the normal embroiderythread.

• Therefore, the developed multi-component embroiderythread may be beneficial for embroidering stretchablebody-fit garments, especially where the stress and strainsare more likely at the embroidery areas.

1.2 Ongoing projects

(i) Project title : Development of fabric smoothness tester (Sponsored by Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India)

Objectives : • To design the apparatus as per the requirement of theconcept

• To take preliminary trials on the developed/fabricatedapparatus to verify/optimise the suitability of design andif require to modify accordingly (if required)

• To analyse smoothness properties of various fabricsusing newly developed/fabricated apparatus.

Progress of work : • Designing part of smoothness tester has been comple- ted.

• Varification of smoothness properties of various fabricsusing newly developed/fabricated apparatus.

(ii) Project title : Development of electronic drape meter based on imageanalysis technique (Sponsored by Department of Science& Technology, Govt. of India)

Objectives : • To develop an instrument to measure fabric drape using image analysis principle • To measure the accuracy of the developed instrument

Progress of work : • Initial design of the instrument has been drawn. The experimental rig has been manufactured. • Optimization of design parameters is under progress.

(iii) Project title : Study to Enhance Indian Apparel Exports (Sponsored by Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India)

Objectives : • To reduce spreading loss and improve cutting efficiency

• To develop process-wise benchmarks for sewingoperations

• To suggest techniques for waste minimization andimprove efficiency of various departments

Progress of Work : • Technical studies have been completed in about 20garment export units in Delhi, NCR, Tirupur, Chennai andBengaluru.

2. IN-HOUSE PROJECTS

2.1 Completed projects

(i) Project title : Development of suitable work-wear for workers of oil and gas industry.

Objectives : • To analyse the suitability of existing work-wear to with-stand potential hazard like heat & flame in oil and gasindustry.

• To develop suitable fabric compositions for workers

Research outcome : • Various types of fibres including Nylon 66, p-aramid,m-aramid, modacrylic, hollow polyester & FR viscose etc.were collected. These fibres were blended in differentproportions and converted into yarn. Fabric samples weremanufactured using these yarns. Testing of these fabricshave been completed. Project completed successfully.

(ii) Project title : To explore the possibility and application of the corn husk in textiles

Objectives : • To extract and compare the composition and physico-chemical properties of cornhusk fibres with other cellulosic

fibres.• To explore the possibility of development of yarns using

any suitable yarn manufacturing technology either using100% cornhusk or its blends.

• To optimize the dyeing process of cornhusk fibres usingvarious classes of dyes and evaluating their physical and

chemical properties.• To finish developed material to impart softness and other

required properties.• To design and develop a product line using corn husks

and their blends

Research Outcome : • The corn husk fibres were dyed using various classesof dyes and their physico-chemical properties wereevaluated.

• The blended yarns were woven in to various types offabrics. These fabric samples were successfully dyedand finished with softener to impart softness and smoothfeel.

• The garments and upholstery product lines weresuccessfully developed.

2.2 On-going Projects

(i) Project title : A study on extraction and application of sugarcane fibres in textiles.

Objectives : • To explore extraction of fibres from the sugarcanebagasse and develop pure and blended sugarcane yarnsusing natural man-made fibres.

Progress of Work : • Fibres have been extracted & treated with variouschemicals & enzymes to get finer & smooth fibres.

• Extracted fibre has been converted into yarn. Fabricmanufacturing is under progress.

(ii) Project title : Development of work wear for electroplating workers

Objectives : • To study and analyze the work – wear clothing of workersin the plating industry and comparing it with the recom-mended standards to identify gaps if any.

• To develop suitable fabric for work – wear using variousfibre compositions, weave structures and finishingtreatments followed by analysis to understand whetherthe fabric is meeting the requirement as perrecommended standards.

• To design and develop work – wear clothing to meet thesafety and comfort requirements of the workers.

Progress of work : • Present work wear used by workers have been collec-ted and physico – chemical properties have beenanalyzed. Rest work is under progress.

(iii) Project title : Experimental Investigation of Strengthening of Bassalt fibre Reinforcement Polymer Composite Bars.

Objectives : Main objective of the present study is to develop Bassaltfibre based reinforced polymer composite to be used inconstruction.

Progress of work : • Various Composite materials developed. Testing of these materials are under progress.

(iv) Project title : Investigation on process variables on functional properties of cotton/corn blended fabric.

Objectives : • To have critical study of the properties of corn fibres• Based on the study of fibre properties, to identify the

processing and functional characteristics which may beinfluenced by process variables

• To produce yarn samples using corn fibres with differentmanufacturing process variables

• To produce fabric using yarn samples produced fromcorn fibres using different parameters

• To have detailed investigation on the behavior of theprocess variables on the functional characteristics of thefabric

• To explore the possibility of enhancing the flame retardantproperties of the developed material, using flame retardantchemicals

• To apply statistical tools and prepare mathematicalmodels for predicting the functional behavior of cornblended material

Progress of work : • Yarn & fabric samples (preliminary trial) have been deve- loped with cotton and corn blends• Various fabric parameters are to be tested to assess the

functional characteristics such as flammability, abrasionresistance, air-permeability,& antimicrobial properties

(v) Project title : De-colorization of cotton textile wet processing effluent through nano particles

Objectives : • Preparation and characterization of suitable nanoparti-cles, optimization of conditions for best particlespreparation.

• Study on dye removal efficiency using simulated andactual effluent generated from the dyeing of cotton andits blend with reactive, disperse, vat and sulfur class ofdyestuff.

• Immobilization of nanoparticles on a suitable substrateand their decolorization efficiency estimation.

• Column studies for color removal using simulated andactual effluent from cotton textile processing industry.

Progress of work : • A suitable nanoparticle has been prepared and conditions for best particle preparation have been optimized.• Studies on dye removal efficiency using simulated effluent

containing reactive disperse, vat and sulfur dyes havebeen carried out.

• Effect of various salts and auxiliary chemicals on dyeremoval efficiency has been carried out.

• Removal of color from a cotton textile processing effluenthas been carried out.

• Immobilization of nanoparticles on a suitable substrateand studies on its color removal efficiency has beencarried out.

• Regeneration of immobilized nanoparticle and its reusein removal of color from simulated effluent is in progress.

TRAINING SERVICES

Since 2002, NITRA is conducting job-oriented professional training programs for the textileand apparel sector. During the year 2015-16, 2 full time and 3 distance learning programswere offered in various disciplines. For distance learning programs, classes were conductedtwice in a month on alternate Sundays in NITRA campus. A total of 150 trainees weretrained in different programs. Details are given below.

The programs were offered in the areas of computer aidedtextile design, apparel design and textile testing. A total of 63 trainees were trainedduring the months of May-July 2015. The students came from University of Allahabad,Government Girls Polytechnic, Varanasi, NIFT, Kangra, Teerthanker MahaveerUniversity, Moradabad, Vidya Institute of Fashion Technology, Meerut, FDDI,Bansathali Vidyapeeth and Sam Higginbothams College, Allahabad.

NITRA Technical Campus : The Academic Wing to Support Training Activities

NITRA Technical Campus (NTC) is established from the grants received from MoT,Government of India under ISDS and also grants received from U.P. State Govt. underASIDE Scheme with a view to cater to the manpower training requirements of the completetextile and apparel supply chain. Around 100 programs are offered for skill developmentand skill up gradation of workers working in Textile & Apparel industry. In addition tothese programs, NTC offers 4 year B. Tech programs in Textile Technology, Textile Chemistryand Computer Science & Engineering.

NTC is spread over lush green campus with latest infrastructural facilities such asWi-Fi coverage, digital library, sophisticated laboratories & workshops, seminar halls,play-ground, and separate hostel blocks for boys and girls. In the last 3 years NITRAstrengthened its laboratories, workshops, library and class rooms with latest technologiesby bringing grants from both central and UP state governments.

NITRA provides students a unique opportunity to undergo comprehensive training on world-class facilities, all available under one roof, to make them “industry ready”. Each studentspends about 50% of time on practical training to acquire necessary skills for immediateemployment in the industry. NTC faculty members possess Doctoral/PG degrees inScience, Technology, and Management with specialization in textiles, garments, marketing,HR, retail, merchandising, fashion, IT, EXIM, environment and have vast experience inindustrial consultancy, training and R&D activities.

Placement of first batch of B. Tech. students of NITRA Technical Campus has made arecord. Skill Development under Uttar Pradesh Skill Development Mission (UPSDM) Project

The Department of Vocational Education and Skill Development, Govt. of Uttar Pradeshthrough Uttar Pradesh Skill Development Society has launched the Uttar Pradesh SkillDevelopment Mission (UPSDM) to provide an opportunity to the youth for skill training basedon their aptitude and skill level.

Two programs (i) Industrial Sewing Machine Operators (ISMO) and (ii) Apparel QualityAssurance & Compliance (AQAC) are running under UPSDM Project at NITRA. During theyear 2015-16 eight batches of ISMO i.e. 260 trainees and two batches of AQAC i.e. 53trainees have completed training.

A seminar on “Personal Protective Textile”

A seminar on “Personal Protective Textile” was organized at NITRA on 8th March 2016.Presentations were made by Dr Emiel DenHartog, who is working as a Co-Director, TextileProtection and Comfort Center (TPACC), College of Textiles, North Carolina State University.NITRA scientists discussed about the value added protective textile products which haveenormous potential in Indian market. Program was well appreciated. NITRA scientistsdiscussed above personnel protective clothing and PPEs used in India and abroad. At lastDr. Arindum Basu. Director General, NITRA thanked Dr. Emiel Den Hartog.

A workshop on “Automotive textile, conventional and value added products”

A workshop on “Automotive textile, conventional and value added products” was organizedat NITRA on 20th Feb 2016. Presentations were made by renowned scientist Dr RDAnandjiwala, who is working as a Senior Scientist in CSIR, South Africa. He discussedabout different textile component used in automobile i.e. air bag fabrics, seat belts, carpets,headliners, seating material etc. He also discussed about the application of micro naturalfiber and natural fiber reinforced composite used in automotive industry. Participants fromtechnical textile industry had intensive interactions with the faculty. Workshop has beenvery informative and educative.

A workshop on “The use of Technical Textiles in automotive industry” was organized atNITRA on 26th Feb 2016. Presentations were made by renowned scientist Dr RDAnandjiwala, who is working as a Senior Scientist in CSIR South Africa. He discussedabout automotive textiles used in automotive and transportation purpose. He suggestedthe areas where lot of demand is emerging like filter separators, airbags for two wheelers.NITRA scientists discussed about the value added automotive textile products which haveenormous potential in Indian market. Program has been very educative and informative.Dr. Arindum Basu, Director General, NITRA appreciated the work of Dr Anandjiwala and hisextensive research work.

ToT Program at Nahar Industrial Enterprises

Training of Trainers (ToT) program was conducted by NITRA from January 18-20, 2016 atNahar Industrial Enterprises Ltd., Lalru (Training Provider) (Under PMKVY) registered withTSC, New Delhi. 18 participants from its various textile units attended the program.Participants were from spinning, weaving and processing streams. Relevant QPs/NOSrelated to spinning, weaving and processing were discussed and explained to the participantsin parallel sessions. During the 3 day training program, participants had intensive interactionswith NITRA faculty members and also with fellow participants.

Dr Arindam Basu,Director General, NITRA welcomed the Chief Guest, Shri Kuldeep Jain, CEO VardhmanTextile and distinguished guests from the industry. Key note address was delivered by Dr.Swapna Mishra, Director TSC. She also briefly explained various schemes of TSC/NSDC.Participants endorsed the occupational mapping & functional analysis done by consortium.Shri Kuldeep Jain, in his inaugural address, emphasized on the need for taking the advantageof TSC/NSDC schemes by the textile industry.

Research Advisory Committee (RAC) meeting at NITRA, Ghaziabad

Research Advisory Committee (RAC) meeting was held on December 9, 2015 at NITRA,Ghaziabad. Since Chairman RAC Sh. Riju Jhunjhunwala could not come due his very busyschedule, DG requested Dr. R. Chattopadhyay, Prof. IIT, Delhi to chair the meeting. Totaleleven presentations were made by NITRA scientists about the research work done andwork proposed to be done. Committee members and special invitees from industry andacademia gave their suggestions and opinions on the research activities presented by thescientists and appreciated their work.

NITRA releases a New Book on “Pretreatment of Textile Materials for Dyeing andPrinting”

NITRA released a new book on “Pretreatment of Textile Materials for Dyeing and Printing”authored by Prof. (Dr.) M.S. Parmar, Deputy Director and Head - R&D, PTTD and CQE,Head-Textile Chemistry.

This book deals with pretreatment processes of textile wet processing. The book contains13 chapters and covers most of the areas related to pretreatment of textile materials likegrey inspection, role of water, surfactant, desizing, singeing, scouring, bleaching, mercerizing,heat setting, and some other useful pretreatment processes. This book will be useful tostudents, personnel working in dyeing and printing units, technocrats and people engagedin research & textile trade.

Tajik Delegates visited NITRA

A high level delegation from Tajikistan representing their textile and apparel industry visitedNITRA on October 12, 2015. The team was lead by Mr. Armen Zargaryan, representing ITC.During the visit, the delegates interacted with NITRA scientists and expressed theirwillingness to avail the services from NITRA.

Subsequent to this visit, a MoU was also signed on October 15, 2015 between NITRA andThe Technological University of Tajikistan (TUT), where-in it is proposed that NITRA’s serviceswould be availed by TUT to set-up a full fledged Skill Development Centre in Tajikistan. Thiscentre will help the Tajik Textile & Apparel sector to get skilled manpower which may boostthe growth of the sector.

NITRA, Ghaziabad organized a 1-day workshop on Protective Textiles: Present Scenarioand Future Prospect on 11th Dec.’ 2015 at India International Centre, New Delhi. Renownedtechnical consultants and international speakers Dr. Surinder Tandon, Senior Scientist inTextile Science & Technology Group at AgResearch Ltd, Christchurch, New Zealand, andDr. Arun Aneja from Dept. of Engineering, College of Engineering & Technology, East CarolinaUniversity, USA were the presenters in the workshop. In addition to Director GeneralDr. Arindam Basu, Officiating Director Sh. Abhijit Pal, Dy. Director, Prof. (Dr.) M.S.Parmar,other scientists from NITRA, and Prof. (Dr.) Rabisankar Chattopadhya, IIT, Delhi, aboutthirty entrepreneurs, professionals, and students from textiles & apparel industry werepresent as delegates. Dr. Aneja spoke on two interesting topics “The Quest of ContinualGrowth in Textiles” and “New Product Development – Case Studies of Novel Concepts”.The other speaker, Dr. Tandon also discussed on two important topics such as “ExtremeCold Weather Clothing” and “Wool as a Technical Fibre for Protective Textile”. NITRA organizes Training Program (ToT) under PMKVY

A Training of Trainers (ToT) program was organized by NITRA from Nov 2-4, 2015 at itscampus in Ghaziabad for Training Providers (Textile Mills) registered with TSC, New Delhi.17 participants from 8 textile units attended the program. Participants were from spinning,weaving and processing streams. Relevant QPs/NOS related to spinning, weaving andprocessing were discussed and explained in parallel sessions. During the 3 day program,participants had intensive interactions with faculty members and also with fellow participants.

NITRA has been empanelled by Resource Support Agency (Textile Committee), Mumbaias an Assessment Agency for assessing the trainees trained by IAs under ISDS. In thisregard, RSA (Textile Committee), New Delhi arranged a training program at NITRA,Ghaziabad on August 07’ 2015 for accreditation of NITRA’s assessors.

Dr.(Prof.) M.S. Parmar, Dy. Director & Head, RPD, CQE and PTTD divisions NITRA andHead, Textile Chemistry, NITRA Technical Campus, has won the AICTE Award undertechnical book Category for authoring a very useful Hindi publication titled “ChemicalProcessing of Garments.”

SAARC Member Countries’ Delegates Visit NITRA

A team of delegates representing various SAARC country members, along with officialsfrom Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), visited NITRA on 25.06.15. Dr. Arindam Basu, DirectorGeneral, NITRA gave a lively presentation before the visiting delegates on multifariousactivities of NITRA and, along with senior scientists of NITRA, had an intimate discussionwith them. NTC organizes Techno-Science Quiz 2015

The second Techno-Science Quiz Contest was organized by NTC on 7th November, 2015for 12th Standard science-stream students from various reputed schools situated in andaround Ghaziabad. Students from Ingraham English Medium School secured the 1st andjoint 2nd positions respectively. The third position was held by Green Field Public School.All the winners were rewarded with cash prize and certificate. In addition to event-toppers,individual school toppers from every school participated was also rewarded with cash prizeand certificate. Furthermore, certificate was awarded to all participating students in orderto acknowledge and encourage them.

NTC Students win Prestigious Scholarship

It is a matter of great pride that two of NTC students, Vivek Yadav (Branch: Textile Chemistry2nd year) and Ankit Chauhan (Branch: Textile Technology 2nd year) have been awardedprestigious scholarship awarded by TT Group and Saria Charitable Trust, respectively.Hon’ble Sri. Sports Meet 2015

NITRA Technical Campus organized a 3-day intra-college Sports Meet 2015 during 5-8October, 2015 with a view to develop its students’ physical and mental health viz-a-viz theiracademic development. Five categories of sporting events such as, cricket, volleyball,badminton, kabaddi, and chess were included in this year’s sports meet. About 300 studentsfrom various branches have participated with great enthusiasm.

Parichaya – The Fresher’s Party 2015

Parichaya 2015, the annual fresher’s party of NTC was held on 9th October, 2015. Theevent was celebrated with great fun, fiesta and frolic. The feature event of the party wasMr. and Ms. Fresher title competition. The other items included were solo song, groupsong, solo dance, group dance, instrumental and satirical skits. The program ended witha colorful ‘Fashion Show’ by NTC students. About 400 students participated in the program.

In order to nurture and sharpen the intellectual skills of students of NTC, an intra-collegeGroup Discussion, Extempore & Debate Competition Dristikonn 15 was organized on3rd October, 2015. About 50 students participated in the event.The event was a battle-of-brains where individual genius sparkled with logic and counter-logic and students were atthe peak of their eloquence.

POWERLOOM SERVICE CENTRES

Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has established 45 Power Loom Service Centresacross the country. High priority is given to these projects as these centres help in localentrepreneurship development, employment generation and economic development ofstates and country.

Out of these 45 centres, administrative control of 8 Power Loom Service Centres (PLSCs)is assigned to Northern India Textile Research Association, Ghaziabad. These Centresare functioning at the following locations :

1. In Uttar Pradesh (i) Meerut (ii) Kanpur (iii) Tanda (iv) Gorakhpur (v) Varanasi

2. In Haryana - Panipat

3. In Punjab - Ludhiana

4. In Rajasthan - Bhilwara

These centres are serving decentralised power loom sector to achieve the objectives asgiven below :

OBJECTIVES OF POWER LOOM SERVICE CENTRES

(1) To impart practical training to weavers for improving their efficiency, skill andproductivity. Side by side, quality up-gradation and product-mix diversification arealso emphasized, keeping in view of the present need of national and internationalmarkets

(2) New design development and diversification of power loom products for improvingthe economy and scale of operation of power loom weavers

(3) To provide testing facilities to decentralised power loom sector and make themaware of need and importance of testing required for meeting forthcoming changesin reference to the globalisation trends

(4) To provide technical consultation facilities related to operational difficulties faced bypowerloom weavers.

(5) To co-ordinate developmental activities of powerloom industry with stateGovernments

(6) To motivate decentralised power loom industry towards upgrading / modernisingtheir units and take advantage of government schemes, viz. TUFS, Group WorkshedScheme and Weaver’s insurance etc. and organize seminars/workshops.

(7) To collect and compile statistical information of power loom industry

TEXTILE TESTING LABORATORIES

All eight Power Loom Service Centres are having testing facilities capable to meet basicrequirements of the decentralised power loom sector in normal course. In addition to it,special testing facilities are also available at following three centres. These centres are :

1. Meerut (Uttar Pradesh)

2. Panipat (Haryana)

3. Bhilwara (Rajasthan)

At these locations, samples related to fibre, yarn, fabric and chemical based requirementswere tested. Details of these testing assignments carried out during the year are mentionedbelow :

At Power Loom Service Centre, Gorakhpur, Computer aided ‘Selvedge Monogram’ Softwarehas been installed and related services are open for industry.At Power Loom Service Centre, Tanda, Computer Aided Dobby and Jacquard designsystems are available where as at CAD Centre, Ghaziabad dobby, jacquard, printing andembroidery design systems are available.

These CAD Centres develop new designs and provide training to the person working indecentralised Power Loom Sector.

SOCIAL SECURITY RELATED ACTIVITIES

Power Loom Service Centres are also involved in insuring power loom workers underGroup Insurance Scheme (previously known as Janshree Bima Yojana) towards theirsocial security. During the year 2015-16 a total of 9436 powerloom workers were insuredthrough NITRA PLCSs.

Power Loom Service Centre at Varanasi has been shifted to Zila Udyog Kendra Campus,Lahartara, Varanasi from IIHT Campus. Infrastructure facilities for training, testing etc. arebeing established.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES TO NITRA MEMBERS

NITRA has been providing laudable services to member units since it’s inception in 1975.Besides offering services to meet their ever changing needs, it also offers substantial benefitpackage to member units to strengthen the mutual relationship. Following is a spectrum ofadditional services provided to individual member units :

1. Centre for Academic Partnership Scheme (CAPS)

In a bid to diversify our activities and to intensity interaction with academic institutionsand to augment techno-education base of the country as a whole, NITRA offers library& information service to the students, faculty and researchers of various collegesand institutions through participation in “Centre for Academic Partnership Scheme(CAPS)”. Institutions interested to avail this unique service may obtain membershipat a nominal admission fee of Rs.20,000/- only. Apart from this, a nominal sum ofRs.500/- per year will be charged to the individual user to issue his/her library card.For further details please contact the Asstt.Librarian.

2. Concessional Enrolment Fee in Workshops/ Seminars/ Conferences/ TrainingProgrammes etc.

The enrolment fee for participating in Training Programmes/Workshops/Seminars/Conferences conducted by NITRA is much less for member units as compared tonon-member units.

3. Discount on Testing Charges

Accounting Policies and Notes on Accounts

A. BASIS OF ACCOUNTING The Financial Statements are prepared on Historical cost convention and on

Mercantile Accounting system. B. FIXED ASSET

Depreciated Fixed Assets are stated at cost, which include expenditure incurred on acquisition of assets concerned such as freight, duties, Taxes and incidental expenses up to the installation of assets. Assets acquired in Power Loom Service Centre's, CAD, Sponsored Projects and Testing Labs are stated at Revalued amount.

C. DEPRECIATION

During the year the Society has charged depreciation on fixed assets on Written down Value method as per the rates & manner prescribed in the Income Tax Act 1961.

D. INVESTMENT

Investments are stated at cost.

E. FOREIGN CURRENCY TRANSACTION Transactions in Foreign Currency are accounted at the exchange rate prevailing on the date of the transaction.

F. REVENUE RECOGNITION

(a) All incomes are accounted for on accrual basis except for membership subscription which has taken on receipt basis.

(b) Government grants are accounted on the basis of sanction letter from the government department.
