Wehad a fun night at ourMay12th Lodge meeJng celebraJngthe 17th of May. We had acarn iva l par ty hosted byCharloPe, David and KatrinaFluker and Anna Rita Perkins.
Therewere games to play and good food to eat. Thankyouforallthehardwork,fungamesandgoodfood.Wehadporkroast,mashedpotatoes,redcabbageandPastorIda Iverson made her wonderful cauliflower casserole,too.
WehadagoodgroupattheJumboShrimpbaseballgameonMay20th. Theweatherwasperfectandthefoodandcompanythebest.Ourteamwonthegame,too.
On Tuesday, May 30th, we had a group meeJng at theCummer Art Gallery for Tapas and Wine. We walkedaround thebeauJful gardensand lookedat theexhibitsandatealiPle,too.Afunevening.
On Saturday, June 17th, we will have our NewMemberBrunch and Welcome Ceremony from 10:00 a.m. to12:00.Welookforwardtoseeingallofournewmembersand our lodge members to welcome and meet eachother. As always, we will have good food and greatcompany.

KENT’SLIFECHANGINGJOURNEY
Iwantedtosharewithyouamedicalexperiencethathasforeverchangedmylife. IhadadoubleorgantransplantatMayo in Jacksonville April 23 whichsavedmy life. I was very ill formany,manymonths andwasnot surehow itwould all turn out but to date I haveresponded well to the new liver and
kidney. From nowhere, I began exhibiJng health issues inearly2016,butthedoctorswerenotquitesurewhatwashappening. They think I got an auto immune deficiencycaused by hepaJJs A&B. For several months my gastroDoctor thought he could reverse the damage that washappening to my liver but by September my liver wascompletelygoneandmygastroDoctortoldmetogetintothetransplantprogramatMayoClinicwhichIdid. MyfamilyhasalonghistoryofhealthcarewithMayoincludingme so because of a cancellaJon I was able toschedule the evaluaJon quickly. When they concluded,theytoldmeyes, Ineededanewliver,butthingshadtoget worse before I'd be considered a viable candidate.Andworseitgot.BecauseofthestressonmykidneysbyDecember they were gone so I started dialysis whichamountedto4½hoursthreeJmesaweek.Whiledialysiswassavingmy life Igrewtohate itbecause Ialways felthorrible for a day or two anerwards. I also accumulatedexcessive fluid so needed extracJon twice weekly sincetherewasnoway toprocess it frommybody.Because Ialso fought a low hemoglobin I received two units ofbloodweekly.Ilost75pounds,hadnoenergyorstamina,
minimalappeJteandwasforevercold. IwashospitalizedseveralJmes-oncemysisterMarcihad to call 911 because of an episode. Because of thesideeffectsof a failed liver I donot remember anythingabout it. I had three “false” starts with a liverreplacement, but it took several months to get both akidneyandliverthathadtocomefromthesamedonor.Ireceived a call at 11 p.m. Saturday evening that organswereavailablethatwouldworkforme. Followinga61/2hoursurgeryApril23,IwasinICUlessthan24hoursandwenthomeanersixdays. I've hadminor ups and downs, but have respondedwell to the organs and the anJ-rejecJon meds areworkingwell.IgetJredandhavetorestbutmyvitalsareingreatshapeconsideringwhatIhavebeenthrough. Throughout thisexperience I tried tokeepaposiJveastudeandrelyonmyChrisJanfaith. Ialsounderstandthepowerofprayerswhichcamefrompeoplearoundtheworld. I am so thankful to thedonor andhis family forgivingmeasecondlife,formyfriendsandministersfromchurch,SonsofNorway,neighborsandotherswhostoodwithmeinmanyways,tomysisterMarciandtotheMayoClinicandtheincrediblehealinghandsofsomanydoctorsandmarvelousstaff. MovingforwardIplantodevoteJmetotheliverandkidney foundaJons and to encourage individuals to beorgandonors. AsPastor Iversonhas toldme, I amnowlivinganewnormal.

Ohhhhh, I think I ate too many hot dogs! Thiscould be heard by some of the 29 Sons of Norwaymembers and friends who aPended the Saturday,May20JumboShrimpbaseballgame. I think everyone ate all theywanted to eat. Theeveningstartedwithhotweatherbutitsoonbecamenicewithacoolbreezeoutoftheeast. We must have brought some good luck to theJumbo Shrimp because they beat the MississippiBraveswithawalk-offrunintheboPomoftheninthinning. That’s right, for those of youwho len the gameearly,all theexcitementwas in theninth inning.TheBraves Jed the game 3-all in the top of the ninthinning.ThentheJumboShrimpweredowntothelaststrike in the boPom of the ninth andwe thought itwasgoingintoextrainnings.ButasImenJoned,JohnNorwood homered to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 4-3victory. Everyone enjoyed the game and the JumboShrimpwon!

WhenImetDr.CroomemanymonthsagoIhadhopedhe could do my surgery. It is done on a rotaJng basis asthere are 8 transplant surgeons. When I discussed myNorwegianheritage,DrCroomerespondedthatheandhiswife had visited Norway. We bonded and he is now myNorwegianbrother.Whenhecameintomyroomthedayofsurgery,my prayer had been answered. He said he wouldliketodothesurgeryandIwassohonored. HeisaterrificsurgeonandIfeltsafewithhim!Heisnotjustmysurgeon,butalsoagreatfriend.Aner7hours,Iwason the road to recovery.
