March 13, 2016 Fifth Sunday of Lent

To the exiles in Babylon, Isaiah foretells a new exodus, when the Lord will lead his people from captivity to freedom. True freedom is rooted in the person of Jesus, not in observance of the Law.

It is he who challenges us to examine our own hearts before self-righteously judging others..

PLEASE NOTE: There will be

STATIONS OF THE CROSS at St. Michael’s on

Friday, March 18 at 6:30 pm

March 13 , 2016 Fifth Sunday of Lent Sunday Scripture Reflections

Reading 1 Isaiah 43:16-21 To stir up their hope about what God would do for them in the future, the Israelites often looked back to see what God had done for them in the past.

The prophet helps them to do just that in today's reading. He recalls their exodus from Egypt and how God provided for them in the desert.

Then he says, "Look ahead!" In other words, whatever great deeds God had done in the past, God can always do something new and greater.

Reading 2 Philippians 3:8-14

You have probably noticed that Paul often talks about himself and his own faith experiences in order to convince others to follow Christ.

Today he recalls that he has given up everything to make room for Christ in his life. He knows it isn't easy to do this. But in the end he will share in Christ's Resurrection. That is why Paul describes himself as a runner, pushing on toward the finish line.

Gospel John 8:1-11 Once again the scribes and Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus. They bring him a woman caught in the act of adultery. The Law of Moses requires that the adulter-ess should die. If Jesus does not agree, he will look like someone who does not respect the Law of Moses. To the Pharisees' amazement, Jesus at first ig-nores them. Then he stops them in their tracks with an unexpected challenge: "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." One by one the judges and critics drop their stones and drift away. Now that they recognize their own need for for-giveness, they are not ready to condemn someone else. Neither does Jesus condemn the woman. He simply re-quires her to turn away from sin. Now she has a chance for a new beginning.

Domingo Escritura Reflexions

LIVING LENT WITH MERCY “Jesus’ attitude is striking: we do not hear words of scorn, we do not hear words of condemnation, but only words of love, of mercy, which are an invitation to conversion.” Pope Francis

Reflection Prayer

Lord, you never tire of forgiving us and showing us God’s mercy.

Sometimes people prejudge my character, criticize the way I look, condemn my lifestyle.

Sometimes people embarrass me in public, betray my confidence, take advantage of me and

say things about me that are not true. I get tired from feeling rejected and defeated.

Lord,

I realize that the very things that hurt and offend me, I do to others as well.

Give me a forgiving spirit

and help me to treat all people with nonjudgmental love and mercy. Amen.
