The LHC RAdiation Monitoring System for the Environment and Safety

Overview: LHC radiation monitoring RAMSES project System design: architecture Development Status and results

13 Oct 2005 ICALEPCS 2005 3

LHC radiological risk

The operation of accelerators involves interaction of high energy particles with matter

Beam losses : nuclear interaction of high energy protons with matter production of mixed radiation fields (Hadrons, neutrons, muons, photons, etc.).

Accelerator in operation :

Stray radiationsIrradiation risk for personnel (accessible areas) and risk for the environment (through access pits, releases of water and gases).

Accelerator stopped :Material activation due to beam losses.

Radiation dose rate due to activationIrradiation risk for personnel (maintenance works) and risk for the environment (dispersal of radioactive material).

Calibration of detectors (experiments).

Radioactive SourcesIrradiation risk for personnel and for the environment (dispersal of radioactive sources).

LHC Radiation monitoring

The radiological safety of the LHC will be ensured by the on-line acquisition from 350 measurement devices of 15 different types spread over the 8 points (both surface and underground installations).

RAMSES major functions

Monitoring radiation variables (on-line local and remote display) Monitoring of ambient dose equivalent rates and ambient dose equivalents in

the working environment (underground accessible areas, on the surface and in the environment)

Measurement of radioactivity in released gases and fluids (radioactive nuclides)

Measurement of induced activity during LHC stop/shutdown

Alarm functions (local and remote) Radiation level alarms based on ambient dose equivalent rates and ambient

dose equivalents Technical alarms Interlocks

Long term permanent and reliable data logging Measured values Events (radiation alarms, interlocks, system fault alarms, technical alarms) System configuration

Design and development constrains

Distributed Radiation Monitoring system Flexible and modular design for easy installation and configuration Integrated software infrastructure (control rooms, networks and

databases) Operational 24/24 hours a day, 365/365 days per year A safety integrity level (SIL) 2 for radiation alarms and interlocks Industrial solution based on standard industrial equipment (COTS

where possible) Compliant with applicable international standards for radiation

protection instrumentation Application of the IEC 61508 standards for the overall project

management Valid for the replacement of the current radiation monitoring system

(ArCon: VME, 68k, OS9 …)

Special requirements

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

State of the art technology Certification required for radiation protection instrumentation used in decision making ! Delivered by legal European bodies (Already required in most European countries, in France from 1/1/2008 onward…) Based on the total compliance to applicable international standards (IEC).

CERN SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

Evaluation required for radiation protection instrumentation used in CERN very particular radiation fields (high energy, mixed and pulsed fields) Based on a technical reference frame established by legal European bodies derived from experimental studies and Monte Carlo simulations.

Status and results

The system installation has started in the LHC surface The equipments to install in the tunnel are being tested

in other accelerators A long way still to go before the LHC is fully covered by

RAMSES …

And after that … the current installations for the other accelerators will be replaced by RAMSES.
