A Message from the Principal

Prayer for Term Four Dear Lord,

We ask that you be present in this space. Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new term make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.

Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with us the assurance that You walk through it with us. Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use.

May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be placed in your hands.

May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life, and courage to all we come in contact with this term. We thank you, Lord.

We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen

Dear Families, Welcome to you all as we begin Term 4 together. We welcome Iggy (Ignatius) Cavanagh and his family – Xaviera and Ben who join Holy Spirit this term. Iggy joins students in Year 4 alongside Mrs Mimi and her class. The Cavanagh family are members of our parish community and we are excited to have them join us.

We welcome new staff to our school, Mr Ralph Flores, our new ISA and Miss Natalya Kariotis who has joined the team at OSHC. We welcome back Miss Amelia Llewellyn who after a short stay in Melbourne has re-joined our ISA team. It has been lovely to engage with you all as you join the community of Holy Spirit. Congratulations Miss Bronwyn Tranter and her fiancée Phil on the safe arrival of Scarlett Jean on Monday 4th October. All are doing well. We are excited for Bronwyn and Phil as they begin the next chapter in life. This Friday morning from 8:10am we have the official re-opening of our prayer garden – Yilang Garawa -

to acknowledge the 12 month anniversary of Mrs Bernadette Morriss, former Principal of our school from 2007 – 2013 who entered into eternal life on Sunday 18th October, 2020. This will be a beautiful morning in our front garden as officiated by Bishop Charles Gauci. Current and former students, staff and families will be in attendance on the day, alongside family, friends and colleagues of Bernadette. Everyone is welcome to attend. Thanks to so many in making this Friday special. Bern would be proud knowing her legacy continues at Holy Spirit. Further details can be located on page 3 of the newsletter. Congratulations Mrs Shelley Murtagh and her husband Sean who are expecting their second child in February, 2022. many wonderful activities over the past two weeks. To all staff from COL and OSHC, thanks for your continued work. Congratulations Aanya Shetty who recently participated in the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) Shorebird Competition. Students from Years 3 to 6 from across the country were invited to create an ecotourism poster for a wetland or coastal area that provides an important habitat for shorebirds and other animals. Aanya’s poster represented the Northern Masked Lapwing. For her efforts Aanya was awarded in the highly commended group and was the only candidate from the NT who was recognised from her year level. Please refer to link attached to check out Aanya’s great poster. 2021 Shorebirds Competition Summary and Results | ANSTO At the end of last term students from Years 3 to 6 participated in an Anti-Bully Audit which is in support of our Positive Behaviour Support Policy Procedures. The audit was an opportunity for us as a school to gauge how our students are feeling here at school and home. Upon collating and analysing the data gained we met with our students Monday morning. We discussed the need to not only look after ourselves, but all those around us. Students were asked to reflect on the language and actions they may use at times, both in the classroom and playground. Our new term provides everyone the opportunity for a new start. The Top Ender Magazine – a magazine created by defence families for defence families - has a great one page colour article in October/November edition of our school. This was a great opportunity to introduce our Defence School Mentor, Mrs Chris Crimmings and all our defence students to existing and potential defence families being posted to Darwin in 2022. We have provided a link to the article. Early Term 4 we will welcome all our 2022 Transition students to join in a school readiness program. A flyer with all important dates has been included in our newsletter. We have a Parent Information Session scheduled for Wednesday 20th October from 5:00pm in our Multipurpose Room. Our teachers and support staff have been working hard in pre-paring a great program for our new children. The aim of the program is to familarise students and their families with our facilities and to experience fun and engaging learning activities that introduce them to the environment, routines and structure of our school. If you are yet to submit your application for Transition, 2022, or any other year level, please ensure you do this soon. If you know of a family who has a child eligible for Transition in 2022, please encour-age them to make contact with our front office. Members of our leadership team are available to speak with families as required. Our school counsellor, Cathy Bourke continues with us each Thursday for remainder of 2021 school year. Cathy will introduce herself to our school community more formally through our newsletter early Term 4. Where you wish to find out more about school counselling please make contact with our front office staff or alternatively call Catholic Care NT on 89842000. Please take the time to lock in important upcoming events as identified in our school calendar. For clarification or further details, please do not hesitate in making contact with our front administration staff or refer to Operoo. With the buildup and wet season upon us it is important we are all aware of policy and procedures around this. Our Cyclone Policy and Procedures for families are available on the school website. In addition, we have included policy around NT Extreme Weather. Please take the time to read. I thank you all for our first week together. Please ensure with the Darwin heat that you take the time to rest and relax as required. Blessings, Mrs Paula Sellars Principal

MISSION MARKET DAY

Students are eagerly preparing for our Holy Spirit Mission Market Day, to be held on Friday 29th October from 11:30am – 12.30pm. Each class is responsible for running their chosen stall and students can pay a small fee to participate in each of the activities. For a gold coin donation, they may also dress in casual clothes for the day.

This is a fundraiser as part of World Mission Month and an excellent way for students to reach out to others in need. All money raised will go directly to Catholic Mission, who work with children in over 160 countries worldwide. This year all money raised will support children in Thailand giving them the gift of early years education. To find out more visit: https://www.catholicmission.org.au/see-our-work-in-action/kusa

Below is a list of the exciting activities that we have in store! We are

asking for your help by donating any items that your child’s class may

require on the day:

PARENT PICK UP & DROP OFF AREA We have been experiencing a number of traffic flow issues with our Parent Pick Up and Drop off area at afternoon dismissal. These issues are currently leading to traffic congestion on Gsell street, traffic jams in the Parent Pick Up area and dangerous collection of students.

In order to assist with overcoming these issues you can help in the following ways:

Do not park in front of the school automatic gate prior to the opening of the gates of an afternoon.

Do not park your car in the parent pick up area and leave your vehicle there.

Do not park or sit idle on the road that runs through our parent pick up area

If all the waiting bays are full please drive through and park in the visitor car park or drive around again.

Thank you for your cooperation with this important issue that relates to the work health and safety of the children and staff here at Holy Spirit.

INTRODUCING… Eka Singh

Eka joined the team in Community of Learners early in Term Three. In her short time with us she has built strong relationships with the children, families and our staff. Eka was born in Delhi, India and lived there up until March, 2018. She flew into Darwin on Friday 16th March, 2018 with Tropical Cyclone Marcus approaching. Eka was on the last flight into Darwin

on that day and recalls being the last person to walk outside the terminal. She shared that they were not informed of Tropical Cyclone Marcus when flying into Darwin, so after disembarking spent time in duty free, before being informed by staff that everyone was required to leave due to imminent warnings. Eka was excited to arrive in Darwin as her husband, Karan Singh had arrived in December, 2017. Karan works at the front desk in parliament house in security. Upon arrival and following the clean-up of Tropical Cyclone Marcus, Eka, for the months of April and May travelled around Darwin on foot and by bus dropping her resume into all childcare centre’s in and around Darwin and Palmerston. Earlier this year Eka passed her driving exam and for the past eight months has been on her P Plates. She loves the freedom and independence of having her license so she is able to meet friends and of course go shopping. She’s also saving money from using Uber. Eka has two dogs back home in Delhi, a German shepherd and a Labrador. They are great company for her mum. Her Labrador was a gift from her brother. Each week her mum arranges FaceTime between Eka and the dogs, they are her family. Prior to Holy Spirit, Eka worked at Little Flyers. She is grateful of the opportunity to work at Holy Spirit. She loves working with our children and staff. Eka loves to dance, anywhere and anytime. At home she will always have music on in the background. She loves to cook also, she finds this to be a great stress reliever. Eka loves to bake anything sweet. She also likes to paint, this is something she does at home for herself. No art work to date is on display in any gallery. Be sure to say hello to Eka if you have not yet met here, she is a welcome addition to our team.
