    I became

interested inInternationalHarvester as aboy living thefirst coupleof years ofmy life on myGrandparentsfarm. BothGrandparentsfarmed withInternationalHarvester. My Grandfather Wittee

worked at the Scout plant in Ft. Wayne,Indiana. We also had InternationalTravelalls. My brothers and I would fightto see who could get the back seat.

I became involved with InternationalHarvester Collectors in 2003. Oddlyenough, it was not with Chapter 6. I wasone of the charter members of Chapter34 (Cub Cadets). I joined Chapter 6 in2005 and became involved with Chapter6 when they were planning Red PowerRound Up 2006. Needless to say I helpedin the Cub Cadet area of Red Power 2006.

In 2008, I was elected to Director andVice President of the Chapter and stillhold those positions. I chaired the RedPower Round Up site selection com-mittee and am currently Co-ChairingRed Power Round Up 2013.

    I have

always beeninterested inlocal history. Iwas born andraised about 15minutes fromthe InternationalHarvesterTruck Plant inSpringfield,Ohio whichis a largepart of that areas history.

I moved into the old homestead in 1985and became the 5th generation there. Mygrandfather had a portable hammer millpowered by a V-8 engine that he usedto custom grind for area farmers in themid to late 1930s. I pulled the mill andengine from the back of the shed andrestored them. I needed a truck to mountthem on and thought, what could be bet-ter than an IH? I found a 1928, 6-SpeedSpecial and built it to mount the mill on.The mill is operational and I demonstrateit at some tractor shows. That truck was

the beginning of the Red Fever which ledto the purchase of another 6-speed and aF-20 to go with it, an original 1966 1200A Pick Up and a Cub to go with it. Lastyear I bought a 1978 Loadstar to dragthe stuff around. Im doing restorationwhich I hope to have done by the RPRU.

I was showing the 6-Speed graintruck at a show 10 years ago whenI met a IHCC, Chapter 6 member. I

joined the club at that time, and havebeen a director for the past 4 years.

This article, Hostetler Collection is a reprint of an articlefrom the Antique Power magazine.

Loren Hostetler passed way in Aug. 2012, but his wife,Mary, continues to operate the museum.

by Gene PrestonTo escape the rat race that we face daily in Rochester, New

York, my family took a vacation to the Amish farmland inOhio. The area around Berlin, Ohio, is a fabulous place to getacquainted with this pleasant and simple lifestyle.

On the way to Grapevine House Bed & Breakfast inthe nearby community of Winesburg, we passed throughMillersburg, a tiny rural town surrounded by beautifulfarms. As we enjoyed the view along the way, my wife Patcommented on a red-and-white Farmall Drive street sign. Itmarked a lane running back to a handsome farmyard withlarge modern structures.

At the Grapevine House, our hosts, Tim and Jean Hostetler, explained that Farmall Drive is where Tims parents, Loren

and Mary Hostetler, have a huge International Harvestertractor collection. In no time at all we were back at FarmallDrive, heading for the museum.

Ive seen numerous tractor collections at tractor showsand museums, but this collection so impressed me that I feltcompelled to share it with old-tractor lovers everywhere. It is, in my opinion, the most perfect collection of vintageInternational Harvester tractors in the country. This museumis advertised by word of mouth and the only sign is that smallunofficial street sign which my wife noticed.

After retiring from jobs as teacher and principal in 1977,Loren thought it would be fun to restore a couple of his oldtractors. It was not long before he and his son Tim werepurchasing other tractors. This provided to be a fine way tospend retirement since Loren could direct his energy and timeat something that brought him great enjoyment and pride.

Restoring old tractors grew into an obsession. Soon heand his son began traveling out of state of pick up parts andpurchase old tractors. They have only one ground rule tractors must be Farmall or McCormick-Deering made by theInternational Harvester Company.

Some farmers still find it hard to comprehend that thegiant farm machinery company experienced hard times dur-ing the 1980s and was eventually taken over by Tenneco. This conglomerate also owned the famous Case tractor lineand renamed their line Case/IH. Recently, the company pur-chased New Holland, which used to be the Ford tractor farmmachinery line.

Inside the first of two large structures, we stopped atLorens homey little office. I first must put this Farmall haton so I look official in your photos, he said. Neatly stackedon shelves were all the popular antique farm tractor maga-

zines of today along with some very nice 1/16th scale toyFarmall tractors. The wall-to-wall red that greets you in theshowroom is breathtaking. Row upon row of brightly paintedtractors stand ready for inspection. The erect mufflers of somany tractors resemble a forest of silver trees.

Tractors are arranged according to size and model withFarmall As, Super-As, 100, 130 and 140 tractors positionedtogether. Each tractor has a white sign telling its year andmodel. Lorens sharp knowledge of these old tractors is evi-dent. He speaks with authority and can rattle off the historyof each model and what it took to restore it.

The oldest tractor in the collection is a 1922 Internationalmodel 8-16. It is fueled with gravity-flow kerosene, meaning

the engine has no fuel pump. It is started by using a hand

This following article, Renaissance Truck Builder originally appeared in VintageTruck magazine April 2008.

Milt Deets passed away in May 2008. Prior to his death, Mr. Deets sold his 1/2

scale Auto Wagon to Ron and Barb Koogler, Greene County, Ohio, who continue toshow the vehicle.

The Auto Wagon is on display here at the Red Power Round Up 2013.

By Peggy ShankLike the multi-talented people who created the first trucks, Milt Deets of Kettering,

Ohio, experimented with methods of transportation from an early age. When he was10 years old, Deets, who is now 90, turned apple crates into vehicles for other kids inhis neighborhood. Growing up poor on a Nebraska ranch, Deets built his own toys often tractors and trucks and he took some to school for other children to play with.

This boys love of machinery on wheels increased as he traveled through life

serving in the Army, going to school, teaching in vocational school, marring, raisingchildren. His jobs of blacksmithing as a young boy, working as a machinist in theArmy, and as machine shop superintendent, welder, and vocational school instructor incivilian life added to Deetss large pool of talents. He needed them all to restore full-size tractors or to recreate tractors and vehicles sometimes starting with nothingmore than a steering wheel and to build half-scale models, such as this circa 1916International Harvester Auto Wagon.

An interest in half-scale models materialized 50 years ago, when he and his six-year-old son attended an antique tractor show. Following the show, Deets built ahalf-scale Rumely OilPull that his son drove in a Kettering parade the next year. Hischildren still have the Rumely, and it still runs. Such a testimonial indicates the qualitythat Deets built into his projects.

Building or restoring antique models requires knowledge of welding, woodworking, electrical systems, mechanics, and engineering, according to Deets. He came by thewoodworking skills naturally, he said, and he learned welding at a school. Working

with fire trucks and as a machinist in the Army gave him training in mechanics andelectricity as they pertain to vehicles, but his engineering skills are homemade.

Jim BoedickerIn this age of high tech music, its sometimes nice

to know that someone can still make music the old

fashioned way. Jims unique finger style guitarplaying appeals to a wide range of audiences. Hisrepertoire includes many humorous songs, occasion-ally some trick guitar work, standards, and serioussongs that can speak to and stay with his audiences. His casual style works equally well in a large concertsetting or a small intimate group, and he especiallyenjoys performing family venues.

Forty years of guitar playing has found him per-forming everything from rock to country and blue-grass to gospel. He established himself as a legiti-mate songwriter when he won second place at TheChristian Artists Music Festival in Estes Park,

Colorado in 1981. Since then, he has beena ctivein jingle work and performance for local radio andtelevision as well as production, promotion, record-ing, consulting, and encouraging aspiring talent. Hisrecordings enjoy regular airplay at radio stations in thenorthwest Ohio area.

In addition to his solo performances, you willfind him in a behind the scenes position for otherartists and groups. He performs routinely for numer-ous civic groups, corporations, fairs, festivals, andnumerous church and family events throughout Ohioand neighboring states. He is utilized regularly bylocal Christian television and has shared the stagewith some of the nations most respected gospel andcountry artists.

He has performed for organizations such as:WTLW TelevisionThe American Cancer Society

1924-1963 Farmalls were the largest sell-ing row crop tractors.

1939-1952 Farmall H became the #2 sell-ing tractor of all time in North America, over390,000 sold. (Ford 8N was #1)

1947-1979 Farmall Cub (later InternationalCub) remained in production the longest.

The last IH tractor, a model 5488 was builtat the Rock Island Illinois Farmall WorksPlant on May 14, 1985.

In 1951 the US Army through theSpringfield Armory H contracted InternationalHarvester to produce M1 Garand Rifles. Andfrom 1953 to 1956 produced 337,623 rifles

in total, according to the Army OrdinanceDepartment.

International Harvester produced homeappliances. The IH appliance division wasoriginally developed to manufacture com-mercial grade items to the farmer, most ofwhom had just received electricity. Amongthese items were milk coolers and walk-infreezers. Later IH made kitchen refrigera-tors available in the latest designer styles. These products were introduced in 1947 andsold for less than 10 years. The refrigeratordivision was sold to Whirlpool Corporationin 1955.

    Red Power Round Up 2013

    Cub Cadet 123

    IHC-6 has sev-

    eral members

    from Pennsylva-

    nia. One group

    wanted to make

    a contribution to

    the Red Power

    Round Up, so

    they took on

    the project of

    restoring a Cub

    Cadet 123, the

    rst model with

    hydrostatic

    drive.

    There were sev-

    eral members

    involved in the

project, LarryWilson, Richard Purdy, Dave Beck, Tom Kennedy and Tom Beck.

Tom Beck can be described as the man in regard to the Cub Cadet

    123 rafe trctor.

Tom was instrumental in securing the project, hosting the restoration

in his shop, providing the up-front money and putting in the most

hours getting the Cadet back to its former beauty. The groups efforts

have paid off and the results are on display here at the Round Up.

Take the opportunity to stop in and see the Cadet and tell those re-

sponsible good job. And if you are so inclined, get a rafe ticket on

    the Cadet.

A lot of trial and error wentinto the models, whether theywere full- or half-size. Hemade the parts he needed,

and if one didnt work, hereconfigured it and made itagain. The individual partswere never much of a prob-lem, he said, but finding theright engine was paramount ineach project. The 1916 AutoWagon is powered by a mod-ern 8hp Briggs and Strattonengine.

International Harvesterslung the engine and trans-mission under the floor of its

Auto Buggy and Auto Wagon, and they were attached trans-versely (as are most front-wheel-drive models today). These models were unoffi-cially called High Wheelersbecause of their tall wheels, which kept the engine andworking parts elevated abovethe dirt roadways and muckthat appeared with everycloudburst. Deets Auto Wagon is identi-

cally configured. It does not have fend-ers, which were offered on the AutoBuggy, but not the Auto Wagon. He builtthe wheels for every one of his riding, working models, except the Auto Wagon, which has buggy wheels made by anAmish wheelwright.

Deets decided to make the half-scaleAuto Wagon following a tour of theInternational Truck and Engine Corp.sSpringfield, Ohio, plant. He obtained abrochure about the wagon and startedresearching it.

The Auto Wagons transmission, gearreduction differential, and brakes camefrom a John Deere garden tractor. Deetsturned the rims for the headlights on hislathe using hardwood from trees that grew

on his property. Old fire extinguisherssupplied the brass cups.

Deets also made some of the toolsnecessary to produce his models. One ofhis engineering feats is a metalizingmachine that he designed and built fromscratch. It has turntables, vertical feed-ers, automatic stops, and other featuresnecessary to fabricate parts. He has usedthis particular piece of equipment for 30years, and it is still working.

Success does not occur without a lotof hard work, and Deets did not hesitateto give his projects the time and energythey required. He would finish one of his

models in about a year, often workingon them six to eight hours a night. In all,Deets made 18 half-scale tractors, trucks, and cars and restored as many full-sizetractors.

crank. The steel wheels were converted torubber. It has no starter or lights. The new-est tractor in the museum is a huge Farmall856 diesel with dual wheels built in the late1960s.

Hostetlers experience as a teacher trained

him to be a public speaker and his lecturesabout the history of his tractor collection areinteresting even to those not familiar withfarming and farm machinery. He explainshow many of these tractors looked beforethey were repaired and repainted. Manytimes these old tractors have been robbedof fenders, lights, toolboxes, seats, batteryboxes, name tags, wheel weights, and any-thing else that could be unbolted and replac-ing them is a challenge, Loren said.

The tractors are dismantled and revived ina large basement shop where bags of sand are

piled high. The sand is used with a sandblast-er to clean old tractor metal in preparation forpriming and painting. The floor was coveredwith red sand from sandblasting tractor parts.

It is picked up, sifted, and reused a secondtime before it is finally thrown away. Partshung from the ceiling, waiting to be repaintedwith new Farmall red paint.

A second large structure contains tractorsthat are waiting to be restored or are already

completed and await a slot in the mainmuseum building. Loren was so proud of onerecently restored find he drove it outsidein the sunlight for me to photograph. It wasa striking 1958 Farmall 340 with a narrow

front end and fast-hitch drawbar. The 340engine immediately came to life as Lorenturned the ignition. It was complete in everyway and made Loren smile as he drove it intothe sunshine.

Loren has also restored a two-row corn

planter. Painted in its original colors of red, white and blue, the corn planter looks as ifit has just been taken off a dealers deliverytruck. One of the Farmall BN models on dis-play has been modified to have two seats onit instead of one, which provides a comfort-able place for Mary to ride when she wants toaccompany Loren.

The down-home hospitality and person-al stories make this museum unforgettable.Walking between the rows featuring themodels of 350, 400, 240, Super-M, BN, F-14,F-30, Regular, 460, and 560 reminded me of

being in the Baseball Hall of Fame. All wereheavy hitters, all were famous, and all grass-roots Americana.

    Today the Hostetler collection represents

at least one perfectly restored model ofevery Farmall tractor built until the early1960s. The couple welcomes visitors to theirFarmall Drive Tractor Museum, but it is bestto call ahead to be sure they are home. It islocated in eastern Ohio in Holmes Countybetween Trail and Winesburg, one mile southof US 62 on state route 515. The phone num-ber is 330-893-2330.
