4. Confirmation of your Legal Name The P1 Licence must be issued in your legal name, which you provided when you applied to the Paralegal Licensing Process. If your name has been legally changed since that time, you must provide updated proof of a legal name change. The P1 Licence will not be issued in any name other than your documented legal name. This form should only be submitted if there are changes to be made.

Contact the Licensing and Accreditation Department if you require further information or clarification about any of the enclosed documents and information. Omissions or errors to any of the required documents will result in an incomplete filing and will delay the issuance of your P1 Licence.

Please note, to provide legal services in Ontario as a P1 Licensee, you are required to carry professional liability insurance that complies with the requirements as set out in By-Law 6, Part II, Section 12(1), unless otherwise specified in the Law Society Act or the Law Society’s By-Laws. Procedures for Taking the Oath by P1 Licence Applicants

1. All paralegal candidates who wish to be licensed in Ontario must take theOath.

2. Any candidate who objects to swearing the oath for conscientious reasons, or on the grounds that swearing the Oath will have no binding effect on their conscience, may affirm the oath.

3. A candidate, who is a resident of North America (Canada or the United States) when taking the oath, must appear and swear or affirm the Oath before a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits, Notary Public or Justice of the Courts and have that individual complete the Affidavit for the Taking of the Oath.

4. A candidate who is a resident outside of North America (Canada or the United States) when taking the oaths, must appear and swear or affirm the Oath before a member of the Canadian Consulate or Canadian Embassy who is authorized to take affidavits.

5. The completed Affidavit for Taking the Oath must be returned to the Licensing process, Licensing and Accreditation Department by the deadline. Taking the Oath is a requirement for licensing. If the Law Society does not receive a candidate’s completed Affidavit for Taking the Oath, the candidate will be deemed not to have taken the Oath and will not be eligible for licensing.
