Please note that Surnames are spelt according to Department of Defence records.

Known members as at 24.05.18

***Note on Mike Burgess (from above) – he was T/Capt and took over the role of OC of the Detachment in Phil

Perrin’s absence whilst at Coral/Balmoral. He did have an occasion to serve out at Coral/Balmoral. However, his task during this period was not enhanced by the reduction in support by the depleted defence numbers at 1ATF Nui Dat or the reduction in Detachment numbers.

Note – Bailey, Desmond 18687 Sgt RAEME – is missing from the above list, as his DVA records show him leaving

SVN on 14.03.68, which is prior to UCG period for qualifying. However, Des is currently contacting the DVA to correct this error as he has documentation showing him to have departed SVN at a later qualifying date.

REPORT OF THE INQUIRY INTO UNIT RECOGNITION FOR SERVICE AT THE BATTLES OF

FIRE SUPPORT BASES CORAL AND BALMORAL. Keith Ayliffe – Contemplated Results of the Tribunal Findings can be found here. Basically, means everyone who

was at Coral/Balmoral is eligible to the citation. Keith

Please note that the submission still awaits the Minister’s signature.

***THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT*** … From Keith Ayliffe – “G’day Paul.

The next Problem will be how to obtain their medal. They have to apply for it at the following address http://www.defence.gov.au/Medals/Content/AwardsOnlineForm.asp

It will take up to three months to process. Everybody who was in Detachment 131 Div Loc Bty between 12 May1968 and 6 June 1968 should apply. I believe the award has been extended to those who were at Nui Dat as well.

All the names on the list we prepared (above) should apply. Anybody who receives a negative result and who are on that list are to contact me for that purpose, you have

permission to print my email address - [email protected] I have now been named as Unit Rep for Det 131 Div Loc Bty RAA and should any queries arise regarding the Unit UCG they will be referred to me from DVA, DHAA & Defence Dept.

**Detachment Members, who are eligible (above list) have already commenced application submissions. **

…also…

I noticed on the weekend a number of members without an Army Combat Badge (ACB) – pictured at right. Any member who served with an Artillery Unit Example Det 131DLB are entitled to an ACB when applying simply put Unit and Dates in Vietnam. This can also be applied for at the above site. Best Regards, Keith”

**The first piece of great news!** Bert Blink forwarded on the following email sent by Iain Kennedy – originally sent to Keith Ayliffe…

“Keith, Look what I received in today’s mail.

Cheers Iain K”

Now for some very late news – hot off the email –

Grahame Dignam informs us that Bert Blink has just received his Citation in the mail too!

These are the first of many we hope – congratulations to ALL of you from ALL of us.

The Battle of FSB Coral & Balmoral 50th Commemoration –

The following is the list of 131 Divisional Locating Battery Coral/Balmoral Veterans and partners (where applicable) that attended Commemorative Weekend – Alan Robb, Vicky Lewis, Ken Jones, Craig Jones, Bob Billiards, Cathy Billiards, Brian Mitchell, Robyn Mitchell, Dennis Dye Gaye Dye, Geoff Jebb OAM, Phillip Jebb, Gordon Williams, Naomi Williams, Iain Kennedy, Janet Kennedy, Ian Finlay, Janet Finlay, John Bayford, Annette Bayford, John Dellaca, Pamela Dellaca, Keith Ayliffe BEM, BA, Samantha Ayliffe, Neville Wortlehock, Norma Wortlehock, Peter Dealy OAM, Ann Dealy, Peter McKie, Joan McKie, Phil Mulgrew, Helen Mulgrew, Wal Franklin OAM, Lynn Franklin, Ian Amos, Grahame Dignam, Ken woodbine, Phil Sheedy, Terry Erbs, Leslie Erbs, Stan Briggs, Eric Marques, Gordon Malcolm, Bert Blink, Mary Blink

…Terry Erbs forwarded the following comprehensive report –

On Friday evening (12th May), there was a “meet & greet”, organized by the Artillery Assoc, at the Federal Golf Club. Most attended and enjoyed drinks and a briefing of the planned weekend’s activities. Saturday (13th May) morning the National Gunner Commemorative Service was held in very cold, wet & windy weather at the aptly named Mt Pleasant, within the grounds of Duntroon and overlooking ANZAC Avenue. Thankfully the “Everyman’s” truck was there with hot drinks.

At right - L to R - Gordon Williams & Brian Mitchell At left - L to R - Ken Jones, Jill & Wally Franklin OAM.

Col. Ian Ahern (Retd), GPO officer 102 Bty Coral, gave his first-hand account “warts & all” of the first 24 hours at FSB Coral. And “the Soldiers Priest”, Father John “Tink” Tinkler 1RAR’s chaplain 68/69, wearing a large black beanie, read the prayers, and later kept us laughing with his stories.

That evening we all gathered again at the Federal Golf Club for the Coral Gunner Dinner hosted by Representative Colonel Commandant Brig. Gerry Werner AM, LVO (Retd) & Head of Regiment Brig, Craig Furini AM CSC. Those who attended the 40th Coral Commemoration may recall that Craig was then the CO of 12th Regiment and accepted the honour “Coral” on behalf of 102 Bty.

L to R - Wally Franklin, Ian Finlay, Doc Sheedy, Ian Amos, Ken Woodbine, Ken Jones, Brian Mitchell & Terry Erbs.

The dinner’s guest speaker was Maj. Gen. Steve Gower AO (Retd), Artillery FO 6RAR and Director of AWM for 16 years, who spoke again of 102 Bty’s heroic actions during that first night. Although what he said was true and accurate, Wally had to query Steve politely, “was he aware that 131 Bty was also fighting at Coral too”!!! Throughout the weekend the media, and most speakers only mentioned the major units fighting at Coral & Balmoral but not 131 Bty. Rightly and belatedly Locators at FSB Coral & Balmoral have been awarded the Unit Gallantry Citation.

Another oversight was the inaccuracy of the photo of FSB Coral (at left) used as the dinner mats, supposedly taken on the morning of Monday 13th May’68. Unanimously disputed by Locators, who were there on that day, they stated there were no emplacements south and west of road intersection until a day or two later! Unfortunately, this inaccurate photograph is on displayed at the AWM.

The main event was the National 50th Anniversary of

the Battle of Coral & Balmoral Commemorative Service held in ANZAC Parade at the Vietnam Memorial. Maj. Gen. Mark Kelly AO DSC, Repatriation Commissioner, was Master of Ceremonies and the Call of Remembrance was read by Lt. Gen. Angus Campbell AO DSC, Chief of Army, and again our retired & respected Father Tinkler read the prayers.

Typical of Locators, on arrival they re-organized the seating into the shelter of a covered TV broadcasting stand - there was a strong cold wind blowing up ANZAC Avenue!!

Many thanks to John Dellaca for bringing the 131 banner which unfortunately Jetstar mislaid for 24 hours. When it

finally arrived in time for the parade it had 6 stickers on it! The usual wags suggested it had done the Commonwealth Games baton route and rightly toured every state! Assembling the banner in strong wind proved a challenge, and Iain Kennedy took a tumble into the bushes. A very attractive young lady ambulance officer rushed to his aid, I think Iain was hoping for “mouth to mouth” resuscitation but fortunately it wasn’t required and Iain was able to march.

Here comes the band…

Then, here comes the “star” attraction…

…and it still keeps advancing…

At left - L-to R - Alan Robb, Nev Wortlehock, Iain Kennedy, John Bayford, Ken Woodbine, Stan Briggs, Wally Franklin & Gordon Williams.

So proudly we marched “in step” behind the 131 banner past several larger units, who were muttering “who the hell do they think they are’” and halted, as ordered, right in front of the memorial. 20th STA Regiment was well represented by 2IC Maj. Geoff Meekan and the RSM, soon to be Master Gunner, David Nutini. Importantly for us, BC 131 Maj. Alex McDonald and BSM Melvyn Wood laid a wreath on our behalf. Would have loved to have gotten a photo but no one knew that it was to happen, not even Alex!

After the service, some boarded buses and others drove to the Canberra Convention Centre for the Post Service reception. It wasn’t quite the same as the 40th Commemoration at the Great Hall of Parliament, we had to buy our own beer this time but the finger food was very welcome and delicious.

In the evening the moving and emotional Last Post Ceremony at the AWM was dedicated to FSB Coral – to view

Then it was back to the ‘Pavilion’ for drinks and a very enjoyable 131 Div Loc Bty reunion dinner. Thanks to

Bert, “Dig” & Keith for their great organization, the whole weekend went smoothly.

…a ‘50-year-gap” comparison below – Ian Amos sent in the following photos – “Hi Dicko, A couple of

Planning has started to all meet again during the 12/13/14th Oct in Brisbane for Locator’s reunion & radar

dedication.

. Then, of course, there’s the incoming “Coral” mail…

Keith Ayliffe forwarded the following link to Army News –

http://armynews.realviewdigital.com/?iid=159395#folio=30 However, Ed decided to download it (makes it a bit easier) because it’s a very readable and interesting recollection -

Sergeant there for the long haul… Sgt* Keith Ayliffe, of 131 Div Loc Bty. ONE unit that can claim to be among the first in and the last out at FSB Coral is 131 Div Loc Bty.

Radar No. 1 Keith Ayliffe, who arrived at FSB Coral by road about midday on the second day, said it was an often-overlooked fact 131 Div Loc Bty's Survey Section, commanded by WO2 Geoff Jebb, drove from Bien Hoa Air Base before the main landing on May 12.

Page 11: 131 Locators Association - Home - THE EYES and EARS...2018/05/05  · Arty Int/ 31F LP Wortlehock, Neville Charles L/Bdr 54941 Arty Int/ 31E LP Amos, Ian Robert Gnr 2785676 Alpha Radar

"They conducted a survey scheme so when the guns arrived they would have a grid plan for the regiment to fire the guns with accuracy," said Mr Ayliffe, who was a sergeant at the time. "One listening post (LP) travelled with 161 Bty RNZA and was first to land. The next morning, May 13, this LP under command of national serviceman Gnr John Dellaca walked from FSB Coogee to Coral without protection and assisted in the clean-up of the battle area and then joined 1RAR at their new observation position. "Another LP, commanded by LBdr Eric Marques, also a national serviceman, travelled with 102 Fd Bty while the radar travelled independently by two helicopters, arriving at 102 Bty's position about 4pm on May 12, while our Artillery Intelligence unit arrived with HQ 12 Fd Regt." Mr Ayliffe said he drove up with spare parts for the radar, which had received a great deal of battle damage during the overnight attack, and then stayed at Coral for the duration. He said he brought a spare pair of GP boots with him for one of the LP operators working alongside 102 Bty, who apparently had the heel and half the sole of his boot blown off either by shrapnel or a bullet. "On arrival, the first person to meet me was Gnr Michael Bohl," he said. "I handed him his boots and said he was lucky, meaning the boots, and he replied, 'Bloody oath, we got the bloody M60 back on this morning's patrol'. "I found out later what he meant was that during hand-to-hand fighting in the 102 Bty strong point/LP, their M60 machinegun had been captured by the enemy." Mr Ayliffe said the LPs were required to go on security patrols around the local perimeter and were also used as body collectors after the various engagements. "At all times, all members of the unit were required to do shift work on a 24/7 basis," he said. "Although we were a small unit, the members did not shirk their duties." When the operation ended, 131 Div Loc Bty's Radar Section was one of the last sections to leave Coral. Mr Ayliffe said this was because the helicopter carrying the radar on a pallet swung underneath was required to drop the pallet because it was losing power. "So, the radar waited for another helicopter," he said. Mr Ayliffe was awarded a British Empire Medal in 1980 for services to Artillery Intelligence and has since obtained a BA with Distinction through Deakin University, majoring in History and Australian Studies. The present-day unit which morphed out of 131 Div Loc Bty is 20 Surveillance and Target Acquisition Regiment at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera.

*Keith admits to all E&O’s mainly concerning his “instant in-field temporary promotion”.

John Bayford – “Hi Paul, I was at 31F along with John Dellaca, Ken “Bluey” Peisley and Stan “Pablo” Briggs

on the night of the 12th/13th. The four of us were located with the NZ 161 battery on the 13th. I do not remember our call sign but if John Dellaca was at 31F then three of us were there as well. We were then transferred to FSB Coogee and did not participate in further battles. I would like to know where others were stationed. Best regards, John Bayford”

Bob Billiards – “Paul, I was with the LP 31F with John Bayford, Pablo and Nick Armstrong. I relieved Ken

“Bluey” Piesley as he was heading off on R&R. Can’t remember when I got there but I spent 3 weeks there so somewhere around the 18th/19th maybe. Regards, Bob”

…Bob continues… “Paul, 31F was originally at FSB Coogee and then moved into Coral when FSB Balmoral was

set up as 3RAR moved there with the tanks. We were based with HQ company in the rubber trees on the Balmoral side of the FB. We did report tracer and firing but can’t really remember much of what happened with those reports. When the FSB was mortared one night, the RPG’s and the mortars landed in the trees behind us as the firing was the opposite side of the trees where the guns were. That night the Sig bloke was killed by a mortar round. It was relatively quiet from our side of Coral. Regards, Bob”

Phil Mulgrew – this is another great “Mulgrew read” - “Hi Paul. At the Coral/Balmoral RAA dinner last Saturday

evening, 12th May, at the Federal Golf Club in Canberra. Ric Marques and I, more specifically Ric, worked out that I replaced him at Coral in the last weeks of the FSB’s existence. Ric was leaving as he had an appointment with civvie street that he didn’t want to miss. To my knowledge, the LP (I don’t remember the call sign unfortunately – discovered later it was 31E) was near the 102 Battery machine gun. But I also remember it was close to a burial ground where a number of the NVA dead were buried. On one shift at the LP in the middle of the night with John I’Anson, I called in a Mortrep on mortars fired from a fair distance to our front to the CP. The rounds landed behind us and several US Artillery personnel were wounded when they impacted. I reported the mortar rounds as rockets due to the long fiery trails they left in their wake. I was told very smartly by landline from the CP that they weren’t rockets, but mortars and the fiery trails was slow burning propellant characteristic of Chicom mortar rounds. They must have had someone sticking their head outside the CP to see that when everybody else had taken cover. I was further advised to get my eyes checked next time I was at the RAP. There were insufficient rounds fired for the radar to get a lock and due to the presence of friendlies in the area, no further action was taken. That day, the infantry went to the co-ordinates supplied by my bearing and my estimated range using the tried and true “Flash to Detonation” heard measured in seconds and converted to yards. The grunts found a rudimentary base plate and signs of two others within 10 yards to the left of the supplied bearing. They took a back bearing to the FSB while taking the distance off their map which was close to the supplied distance. They apparently found the firing site very quickly. This was the only time I received some feedback on a Mortrep during my time in country.

I travelled to Coral from Nui Dat by resupply convoy. That was notable in that on the way, the convoy came under automatic fire. But it turned out to be a group of ARVN soldiers shooting at frogs in a creek near the small bridge we were crossing. They stopped shooting and dropped their weapons looking very worried when they were eyeballed by the Cobra gunship riding shotgun on the convoy only yards above their heads. They came within a whisker of being brassed up by us and the gunship. Oddly enough, I don’t remember how we got back to the Dat from Coral. Peter Dealy thought we returned by chopper. Before heading up to Coral, I was at 31A with Jeff Reid and the crew, including Mitch Miller from arrival in country to moving out to Coral, only a matter of about two to three weeks. I don’t remember any strained manning problems at the time, but I was a new boy on the block so I was still getting adjusted to how the place functioned.

I thought we had a very successful Coral/Balmoral Reunion weekend. The pace was somewhat hectic with all the functions to attend as several guys said. But you could choose to attend whatever function you wanted to. All of us attended the majority. Some of the blokes I got re acquainted with I had met at the Welcome Home in 1987, but other I hadn’t see for nearly fifty years. The amount of rank past and present at the various functions we attended, the Mt Pleasant Memorial Service, the RAA dinner, the DVA reception etc, was staggering. Brigadiers, Generals and the what. Ric remarked at the RAA dinner he could start a foundry with all the brass in the room. At our table, we had a serving member of 20 STA Regt, no less than RSM Dave Furini. He told me his background was in the gun batteries and was enjoying his time at 20 STA. Every one of us had a great time at the 131 Reunion Dinner at the Pavilion on Northbourne in the Canberra CBD, the wives included, where a lot of the guys stayed. The food was great and the company even better, although the $7 for a Cascade stubbie was pretty harsh at the bar in the function room. Most of the guys ended up down stairs in the main bar and lounge area where the prices would have been easier on the hip pocket. And finally, a big thank you to Keith Ayliffe, Bert Blink and Grahame Dignam and others involved in making the 131 Coral /Balmoral Reunion a memorable success. Regards Phil Mulgrew.”

John Bristow – “Hello Paul. Yes, I was out on OP with Alpha Radar, during one of our moves I lost my glasses.

On the day of the move into Coral we were held up for several hours, during that time it was organised for me to go into Saigon for replacement glasses. I was replaced and didn't end up at Coral. Many thanks, Paul. John”

Mike Burgess – “Hi Paul, Yes, I was in Nui Dat at the time, Mar 68 to Mar 69. Others with me in the Wksp Det were: Sgt Alan Bensley (Deceased) Radar Mech (Wksp Radar. Yes, we did have a third working Radar as a test bed and to replace faulty components in A and B as required) Cpl Joe McNeil (Radar Mech with Alpha Radar during the Coral/Balmoral Battle). Cpl S Palmer (Deceased) Radar Mech Bravo Radar Cpl John Strautins - Radar Mech Wksp Radar and stand by Mech for A and B. Cfn Bothwell, John Francis Reg No 1732807 - Nasho from Qld, RAEME and he was with the Det from 15.04.68 to 18.03.69. T/Sgt Ian McKenzie RAAOC Storeman. National Serviceman. (We held an enormous number of very expensive Category B stores (ie: technical stores) We often joked that we had enough spare parts to build a new radar. For myself during Coral/ Balmoral I was at Nui Dat running the Wksp Det and Admin Comd 131Div Loc Bty whilst you OC Phil Perrin was deployed with Arty TAC Fwd, I did fly into the FSB on day two with urgent repair parts and out again on day 3 I can’t be sure but I think Cpl Strautins or Palmer flew into the FSB to assist Sgt Mc Neil. Hope this helps. Regards, Mike”

Des Bailey – “Hi Paul. I was the only tech on Anderson. I think Joe McNeil replaced me. As I told you I was not at

Coral when it was mortared. I tied the replacement antenna on the chopper at Nui Dat. I was still with the W/shop until I returned. Sorry can't remember much else Paul!!! Regards. Des.”

Barry Guzder – ‘Hi Paul, After the shit fight at FSB Anderson, Bert Blink and I were choppered out (we were the

last to leave, very scary evening) to Bear Cat (huge Yankee base) overnight. All the others had flown off in the early arvo to Coral. We then flew back to Nui Dat and I went down to LP 31D, Bert went to Arty Tac. Saw Blackwell and Marques the day they returned. Very quiet with eyes bulging! Anyhow, with good fortune we are all still alive. Barry.”

Alan Robb – “Hi Paul, Thought I had better get back to you pronto as your requests may get to the too hard/delay

basket. My recollections tell me I was only at Coral for the first two nights, in Arty Tac. The reason being (I think I may have mentioned this before) that on waiting to leave the previous fire support base a Chinook landed too close to a pit of burning empty sandbags and one of them was swept up and wrapped around my neck and shoulders. Obviously, I got it off asap but it did leave a burn on my neck and “dried” out my shirt, the consequence of this was that with the less than ideal conditions and not getting it seen to immediately (was a bit busy on landing at Coral) and to lessen the chances of it turning septic I was sent back to the Dat. I was at Arty Tac at Nui Dat also. From memory Geoff Blackwell was at Arty Tac, Capt. Perrin and Peter McKie came the first morning from Bien Hoa or Bearcat with convoy, I, along with many others were so pleased to see that convoy. I also recall Geoff was returning to Aus with

Barry Guzder, Bert Blink and I think Rick Marques in May but not sure what date but still think he was at Coral. I feel a bit inadequate with recollections of my brief stay at Coral after hearing at the 50th in Canberra so many vets giving their “vivid” memories and experiences. The other guys I recall at Coral have already been documented so no need to double up.

I am a bit confused, I thought the Unit Citation was all done and dusted not still being considered. It was announced at the Viet memorial on Sun 13th May or was I hearing things. Trust all is well with you in your part of the world. Alan.”

Peter Binns – “Hi Paul. Yes, I was in Vietnam in 1968. I was with 31B at Horseshoe when Coral/Balmoral was on.

I Know that Mick Bohl (now deceased) was at Coral in an LP and then came to 31B after Coral. That’s about all I can recall at the moment. Regards, Pete.”

…ANZAC Day, 2018 - there’s more re-unions –

Michael Quinlan…Vietnam 1968/69 131 Div Loc Bty Surveyors -

Our 50th Anniversary Reunion. Location: Rendezvous Hotel, Melbourne. Dates: 24th 25th 26th April 2018

Over the last 30 years our group has got together to celebrate ANZAC Day and enjoy the fellowship that only ex-service men can understand. There were 12 of us this year plus our wives: Brett Rainsford, Jeff Schafer, Jim Merchant, John Dellaca, John Henshaw, Kevin Browning, Peter Larkin, Randall Jones, Russ Jackson, Wes Hindmarsh, Graeme Owen and myself. Graeme and Russ organised the three days which commenced with a formal dinner in a private room of our hotel on Tuesday night complete with a remembrance for two of our surveyors who have recently passed away, a fine dinner and later a slide/movie presentation of our time in SVN.

It’s 10 minutes of amazing photographs compiled by Graeme Owen – he is to be commended …

Mention must be made of the special presentation of a bottle of “Vin de Merde De Phuoc Tuy” Shiraz and Sauvignon Plonk wines to all present.

Wednesday was off to the March with the 131 Banner supplied by John Dellaca then lunch at an Italian seafood restaurant in St Kilda.

Thursday was spent in a mini bus (a story in itself, driven and supplied “gratis” by our driver Paul after a radio announcement on 3AW). We were driven to the Seymour Vietnam Memorial Monument – many photos taken of this wonderful memorial, then off to De Bortoli’s Winery in the picturesque Yarra Valley for a delicious lunch. It was proposed that next year we head down to Hobart for ANZAC Day. Michael Quinlan – 2788865.” Left to right in the Seymour pix: Glenda Schafer, Jeff Schafer, Jill Jones, Margo Jackson, Randall Jones, Russell Jackson, Wes Hindmarsh, Vicky Hindmarsh, Graeme Owen, Joan Owen, Kay Larkin, Michael Quinlan, Peter Larkin, Kevin Browning, Helen Quinlan, Jenny Henshaw, Jim Merchant, Brett Rainsford and John Henshaw.

Ed: That makes for a great “Family” snapshot – as good as it gets.

Terry Bruce in Camden “The boys and I had another good experience on ANZAC day in Camden. We attended the Dawn Service, having breakfast at the RSL club with some friends afterwards. There was an exceptionally large crowd in attendance (as was the case at the march and service later in the day, which we attended with our Jeep and with the rest of the family along to support us).”

Mike Butler in Mallacoota “I spent ANZAC at Mallacoota (Vic) where we spent a week with our caravan. The photo is at the dawn service at Stephensons Point - very picturesque. Me on the left with my wife Michelle in the middle. The lady on the right is Yvonne Dent from Mallacoota who organises the dawn services. Cheers, Mike Butler”

…and the tradition continues from the heart… Grahame Dignam wrote a word of thanks and connection to the two Cadets from the 233ACU St George, NSW -

Jacky ZHeung and Alex Harbridge who carried the Associations banner at the ANZAC Day this year –

“Hi Alex and Jacky, As, mentioned at the march, I have included a link to our website http://www.131locators.org.au where you can download the newsletter to see your names in print. As it happens you made the front page and page 2 so congrats. Navigate to 2nd last tab on the right and hover - select Latest Edition and download The newsletter is our way of staying in touch with each other and "being inclusive" as some of the older Vets become loners (we are no longer young in body) and their health suffers. I saw you both pushing hard against the wind so again, thanks for your help on the day and we would gladly book you again for next year! Grahame.

…and this is their heart-warming response – “Hi Grahame, On behalf of myself and Jacky, I would like to say thank you for having us hold the banner for 131 Divisional Locating Battery. It was both a privilege and an honour for us to represent the unit, especially on such an important day. Although the wind did pick up a few times throughout the march, it certainly did not affect the rewarding and unforgettable experience. Once again thank you, and we look forward to the Anzac Day march in 2019. All the best, Alex and Jacky”

Ed – that not only goes straight to the heart, but puts a glisten in the eyes. Makes Australia proud.

**Something of real importance for ALL of us…** Barbara Hemming (wife of our late Locator - Leigh Hemming) enlightened me with the following email, and I

believe will possibly shine a light on a subject that does require focus on for ALL of us as time tippy-toes along … “Hi Paul Nice to see the photos in your newsletter thank you for sharing with me. Just thought I should share my recent experience with DVA. Maybe it’s information you and most others already know, but obviously, Leigh didn’t.

Leigh had a gold card ever since his open-heart surgery and he received a 100% disability pension.

I cannot speak highly enough of DVA ‘s Care of Leigh during his final illness. I just clicked my fingers and every piece of equipment or any assistance he needed just appeared. He had daily nursing care, a dietician, occupational therapist, exercise physiologist etc etc.

The woman who conducted the poppy service at his funeral contacted me afterwards to ask if the local RSL could help me with anything....eg me getting a Gold Card for myself, receiving payment assistance for the funeral and applying for a pension on my behalf. I wasn’t aware I would be entitled to any of these benefits. About 2 weeks after Leigh’s death I received a cheque from DVA for some weird amount like $2351.16?... for bereavement expenses which I took to be towards funeral costs.

When I saw the Case Officer, she told me where Leigh had gone wrong!!! Even though when Leigh became ill they covered all expenses, he should have advised them of the new illness and applied for a higher disability pension. She said he would have been entitled to a 150% pension and then, after his death, I would automatically become a ‘war widow’. Leigh didn’t know to do any of these things which would have meant they recognised his illness was due to his war service.

So, after much paper work which she assisted me with, I’ve just received another cheque for $2000 towards funeral costs and I received a phone call to say that as of March 3rd, the day after Leigh died, I am now a War Widow and I have a gold card on the way. She has applied for a War Widows Pension on my behalf which will take longer to assess. I very much doubt I will receive it, but she assures me that even if they give me $1 a week, it opens up some cost saving somethings!!!

Maybe the rest of you know about all these technicalities, but Leigh certainly didn’t, so I thought I’d share my experience for what it’s worth. If the offer hadn’t been made for assistance from the local RSL, I wouldn’t have thought to ask any questions. I’m pleased I followed through.

Trust you and Helen are both well and that it’s nice to be home in Mexico.

Very best wishes to you both. Love, Barb”

…Ed – I persisted with a couple more questions, to which barb responded – Q1."The woman who conducted the poppy service..." - what type of organisation is this? Is it Govt/RSL aligned? Barb’s Reply – “The woman who conducted the Poppy Service was from the Caloundra Sub- Branch of the RSL, The Vice-President if I remember correctly. When I told the funeral director, I wanted the poppy service, he organised the whole thing.” Q2."The Case Officer" - is this person connected to the Department of Veterans Affairs? If so, in Brisbane?

Page 16: 131 Locators Association - Home - THE EYES and EARS...2018/05/05  · Arty Int/ 31F LP Wortlehock, Neville Charles L/Bdr 54941 Arty Int/ 31E LP Amos, Ian Robert Gnr 2785676 Alpha Radar

Barb’s Reply – “The Case Officer is a volunteer with the Caloundra Sub-Branch RSL. She has undergone special training to assist with welfare and entitlement matters, and as it turned out she has had many years of experience in this area.” Q3. Was Leigh a member on an RSL? If yes, then which one? Barb’s Reply - Yes, Leigh was a member of the Caloundra RSL Sub- Branch, but only in fairly recent years. He joined maybe about 6 or 7 years ago after he met some other Vets through a Veterans Heart Health program he attended. For a short period, he would go for a couple of drinks on a Friday night.

Mail Call…

Peter Dealy – “Thanks Paul - Bloody good read again. Cheers, Peter Dealy”

Mail Out I started this in September, 2017 and have decided to continue running down

the alphabet of names and sending some emails to blokes in general to say g’day and just to generally keep in touch. A lot of the blokes I’ve never met, so it’s just to keep some connection alive. Plus, it’s good to keep in touch, even sporadically, it may help to avoid any unpleasant unforeseen surprises.

Mail In - Here are the responses…

Graham “Wheels” Campbell – “Paul, Thanks very much for the excellent newsletters. I apologise for not

responding earlier to your call for an update: in short I am well and enjoying life in Newcastle. Although I am still working for a living I am planning retirement - the finishing line is in sight. I have attached a summary of life so far. It’s short on photos but I will try to find some. I normally rely on Kev Maker’s memory for events affecting 131 – he has a mind like a steel trap! Ubique, “Wheels” - Graham Campbell”

Joe Molenkamp – “G’day Paul, Thanks for your email...sorry I’m a bit late in replying. I’m going fine, no health

problems at this stage and trying to stay fit by riding pushbike and paddling kayak most days.... must be working as I don’t take any pills at all. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for my wife Teena, she has chronic illness with a rare disease called Bechet’s, it’s quiet debilitating and restricts us from doing most things, however life’s still good. Had a really good Anzac Day in Wauchope, rained for both the Dawn Service and the Main march and Service at 11o’clock but still had great crowds for both, seems the last few years have brought more participation by the public and schools. For recreation, I play lawn bowls when I can and also ride a motorbike. Apart from that life is pretty quiet here in Wauchope but it’s a great place to live. Cheers for now.... Joe.”

Derek Hinde – “THANKS very much Paul for publishing my

story "in my shed" ... in the Eyes and Ears latest April 2018 edition... I feel honoured… as I did when I was invited to lay the wreath on behalf of the 131 Locators Association at the Dawn Service at 20 STA at Enoggera last Wednesday, Anzac Day 2018. Terry Erbs’ report in E&E’s is very moving. I am working on my "Locator Profile" now and should send it to you asap. I have enclosed an official Army photo of myself and L/Bdr Alan Robb on Operation Capital in late '68. [ AWM Collection Record: COM/68/1039/VN]. Kind Regards. Derek Hinde.”

Mike Burgess – plus also note Mike’s earlier email in the

Coral/Balmoral article - “Hi Paul, Thanks for your e-mail. I am listed as a member of 131 Div Loc Bty in most of the records from that era. In fact, I was a Capt OC Det 131 Div Loc Wksp, Mar 78 to Mar 79. I enjoy reading the bulletins although I know very few of the names. Regards, Mike”

John Bayford – “Hi Paul. All is well with me and the family. We also have been playing skins and I had a good day

on Friday with 7 skins. I have joined a diving club with the object of witnessing the gathering of the spider crabs off Blairgowrie. David Attenborough is arriving this year to film it.

I did march with the boys on Anzac Day. John Dellaca brings in the banner each year. We will be driving to Canberra on the 11th to participate in the commemoration of the battle of Coral. There are a number of ceremonies and dinners organised. It's hard to believe that it was fifty years ago. Very quiet down here apart from these few distractions. Keep up the good work with E&E’s and nice to hear from you. John”

John Blake – “Paul, as usual very late and protracted. To make up for all my missed sessions.

24th April, I lamented absence of my Returned From Active Service badge Here’s a close up… that had gone missing just 50 years ago. The badge was issued to us about the time of our discharge from the army in early January 1968. I didn't particularly value the badge as every ex- serviceman had one; dime a dozen I had guessed. We had a great store of original ANZACs, returned servicemen from the second world war, Malaya and Korea. I didn't even attach the badge to my jacket but put it "somewhere" where it was lost at Mum’s place. It was lost as far as I was concerned, regretting that though, as time passed and I saw those badges of my friends only too frequently. Last night, 24th April, talking to my sister Joan, I mentioned the badge and that I no longer had one. Joan checked Google to see what the badge would have looked like and decided to have a look in our grandmother’s cabinet of trinkets and treasures to check to see if perhaps it was extant. Just a very short time after this Joan rang to show me a photograph of something that may match. She then brought it up to my place where I was not yet able to drive and she left it with me to examine. It was indeed the missing object in pristine condition In the morning, I opened up with my wife Kirsty's trusty unpicker, the buttonhole in my jacket lapel that had never been separated, having been used for pin-stud badges only, then put the badge in its rightful place. I was then able to wear it with pride, for the first time. This would have been within just a couple of weeks of the date I received it and then lost it. I have sent a rather unlovely photograph but that is the best we get today. ANZAC day at Bellbowrie in suburban Brisbane kicked off at a later hour than expected at 5:30a. Light drizzle eased on cue. Lovely talk about a local youngster who was on her first deployment in the last few days. I was invited to non-ex-service friends for coffee to settle down the very generous gunfire breakfast. The lady serving had rationed out a thimble-full of “Bundy” with one hand then taking pity on me, glugged into my mug enough to make me blush. Then I went back for seconds. We had a lovely ANZAC day shared with old friends who had not joined us for ANZAC day before. Next on the agenda for this “Slowie” is to apply for the other 2 medals. …. Doesn’t apply to me anymore, but does anyone know the protocol for the wearing of miniatures that I had thought only for formal wear such as for dining-in dress? John B”

Chris Connor – “Paul, greetings and thanks for the heads up.

Been OK, although few health problems (the norm at our age) and ‘still above the grass’. Attended 2018 Anzac Day-Cotton Tree Dawn Service and then Maroochydore RSL March..., then home to bed for rest (no drinkies). Golf, (after 50 odd years playing) has finished and am thankful that I have played all over the world, including The Old Course. Now playing Lawn Bowls (at Buderim QLD bowls club). Our son, Matthew, (married-4 grandies, lives in States – Indiana) has just received ‘Honourable Discharge’ from Army reserve, Captain, Medical Corp. In civvie life is a Physician in Neurosurgery. Cheers Phil Connor”

Peter Dealy – “Hello Paul.

Thanks for getting in touch. Made me get my arse into gear and send a Profile that has been gradually accumulating over several years. I always enjoy E&Es, not that I know a lot of the blokes but more to read their stories, both happy and sad. An incredible bunch of blokes, most of whom gave 2 years of their life at the Governments bequest. “Well done that man” Getting ready to head up to the 50th Anniversary Battle of Coral / Balmoral at Canberra as I write. Looking forward to the trip. After that Ann & I heading north to Cape York in the caravan. Went up there last when I came back from Vietnam. After going home to see the folks I headed back to Sydney to be Best man at Ross McKerrow’s wedding. I then headed north. Bus to Cairns, Bush Pilot to Coen, stayed at the Australian Inland Mission, cooked hotdogs for 2

days at the Coen Races as a fund raiser for the Mission then it was pretty rugged going in the Land Rover to Bamaga in 69 alongside the Telegraph line. Only met 3 vehicles in 7 days. Drove across the steel plated bottom of the Jardine R for free. Went swimming, but not these days apparently, those long-tailed fish fairly active I’m told. Keeping reasonably fit these days, touch wood and still involved with the Goulburn Valley Branch of the Vietnam Veterans which is a fairly active one. 3 former 131 blokes and I are part of the GVVVA and have attached a photo of us at a VV Day Melbourne. Ron Mason is the Radar man and both of us were involved in the initial setting up of the Radar that was sent down to the National Museum at Philip island. Of course, in true Army style plans changed, the radar went from the outside to inside (top move) and the rest is history with the official opening of the exhibition taking place later in the year. Being up north unfortunately I will not be there but I know all that can, particularly the Radar blokes, will “gather to the fray” and ensure that 131 Div Loc Bty is given its just recognition. L to r Ron Mason, Kevin Heenan and myself That’s enough for now, I don’t piss in anyone’s pocket Dicko, but I am sure I speak for a lot of us, that your newsletter has helped many of us to reminisce and for a short while as we read we are taken back to remember the good times and reflect on the not so good. Well done. All the best, Cheers, Peter Dealy”

David Dougherty – “Hi Paul, Just noticed in “Birthdays for May” dates for Dennis Dye have a typo. Service in SV shown as 27/11/69 – 26/11/68, should be 27/11/67 – 26/11/68. I’m pretty sure he didn’t leave before he got there though we all would have liked to. I have also included a couple of photos. Regards, David’

Warwick Brooker – “G’day Dicko.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like life is pretty good in Mexico. You’re warming up and we’re suddenly cooling down after an extended summer. Last month of autumn and the trees are finally into colouring, although some have missed the colouring stage and gone straight into ‘fall’. It’s been a busier year than usual for us, with the visit to Marysville/Buxton for Jimmy’s commemorative service and a few days at Bathurst to commemorate with Bruce, Elizabeth and family members; Kanga, who drives for nine hours (with stops) to get there; and some lovely country folk whom I get to know a little better with each visit. In the middle of that, we were told that our landlord had placed the house on the market. It has sold and we’re now house hunting again. We have until the end of June to find somewhere else to live and, looking at the price of local rentals, we’re not sure if that’s going to be in Canberra or elsewhere, perhaps Mexico! Best wishes to you and Helen. Brookey”

John Browne- “Hi Paul. Not that much to report here, but it's getting colder in Armidale. I'm getting a bit jack of

raking up bloody leaves. This place is swamped with deciduous trees. Nice looking, but big mess makers. Anzac Day was good. I didn't do the dawn service this year and missed out meeting Barnaby Joyce who attended. I did however go to the main march and had lunch with the boys down at the "Servies." Still into collecting mate. My art collection has increased since my last letter, with another two William Lister Lister (my great uncle) watercolours. I have about 8 of his works now. And many more "Mollie Flaxmans." My militaria collection has hit a bit of a slow spot, as I'm just purchasing Artillery items now. Just waiting for a few French and Belgian items to come in. Arty collection is up to about 450 items now. Take it easy mate, Browny.”

Dave Crowther – “Hi Dicko, sorry for delay in reply but I was waiting on result of P.E.T. scan which covers from

top of head to bottom of feet. My drama continues as it shows fresh tumours. One on left elbow, one in neck and another in left armpit (close to where I had grade 3 highly aggressive tumours last year). It’s a never-ending battle but I have never given up a fight. I have a beautiful 51-year-old lady friend who lost her husband 8 days after lost my wife. She helps keep me positive. I have appointment with my oncologist on Monday to discuss biopsies. I will request biopsies under ultrasound with the best radiologist on the coast. We are well acquainted with our paths crossing many times since January, 2006. My head is in the right place and doing my best to enjoy life. I also have an appt. with my cardiologist in June as a follow up to heart echo. Three of five of my heart valves to discuss with him. Keep up the good work. Kind regards D.C.”

Peter Creedon – “Hello Paul. Since writing to you last, my wife and I have done a bit of overseas travel, we have

just returned from a 29-day cruise around Japan with a stop in Busan in South Korea and a stop off in Shanghai in China. We had done a 10day tour of China last August with “Trip A Deal”, but I digress. The ship then crossed the Pacific to Alaska stopping in at Kodiak island, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan and then onto Vancouver where in turn we flew home. We are back at home for the time being caught up with child minding duties. Regards Peter. (Peter & Pauline – “Cruising Creedons”)

Charles Brewer – “Hi Paul, Charles here – and thanks for yours…apologies for this late reply! RE Anzac Day for

you – where are you? Not is Aussie then? What are we up to? Quite a list of things Paul – which does include our Pure Colostrum…so helping people get healthy/stay healthy; particularly as here in Aussie there is a shortage of flu vaccines! Doesn’t affect us; we’ve not had flu vaccine since early 2007 – just don’t need it. (This is not a recommendation – our choice after reviewing some of the scientific evidence re immune systems and vaccine’s limitations). Presidential perambulations April and May were busy months for 131 Locators. As this and last month’s Eyes and Ears have shown. Anzac Day saw a great national turn out for our veterans to March behind the 131 Divisional Locating Battery banner. The opportunity to enjoy a meal and catch up with fellow locators after the parade remains the mechanism to meet, compare health outcomes and be surprised by some ‘new’ old faces. Then in mid-May the events associated with the Coral/Balmoral 50th Anniversary saw our Locators well represented. To the surprise of many, and despite the early opposition from Government, the Unit Citation for Gallantry was approved. Sure, we do not get individual Detachment 131 recognition, but to have been included as part of 12 Field Regiment is clear recognition of the role our Detachment played in these battles. A job well done in coordinating the 131 input and organizing our own celebratory dinner was in the capable hands of Bert Blink and Keith Ayliffe. Editor Dicko continues to provide us with news and profiles of 131 Gunners. I enjoy learning what others in the Detachment have done before and after service. We are keen to build up contacts with those from the Battery who did not serve in Vietnam. Their stories are equally important and our Association constitution recognises that our group represents both those who served in SVN and those who served at home. So, if any reader knows a 131er that stayed in Australia during their Army time, please ask them to contact Dicko to share their story. Regards, Allen
