Alternatively you can embroider or crochet them instead – in which case you will need a small amount of black color yarn. ü A piece of white felt (optional) – for the whites of the eyes of the reindeer; ü Any stuffing; ü Tapestry needle; ü Single core copper electrical wire – I used approximately 50 cm (16.7 inches) of wire 1.5 mm in diameter; ü Fabric tape 1 cm wide to work up the wire ends; ü Transparent glue; ü A piece of thick cardboard or plastic for the insoles; ü Red embroidery thread for the mouth; ü Sewing pins. Materials and tools The toy is crocheted in continuous spirals without joining the rounds. You will need a stitch marker to keep track of where the beginning of each round starts. Move the marker up to the first stitch of the next round after finishing the previous one. If you don't have a stitch marker you can always use a scrap of contrasting yarn instead. You can see it in my photos. I use USA terminology for my pattern (don’t worry if you use UK terms, all the differences are explained in the pattern). About this pattern

Happy crocheting!

ü Any yarn in skin, dark brown, brown, red, black and white

colors. I used “Jeans” by YARNART (55% cotton, 45% acrylic,

160m/50g) – 20 g of dark brown, 15 g of skin, 5 g of black, small

amount of brown, red and white.

ü Matching crochet hook (I used 1.75 mm – approximately US 4, UK 2);

ü Four black beads or half beads for the eyes (I used 7 mm in diameter)

for the eyes of the doll and the eyes of the reindeer. Alternatively you

can embroider or crochet them instead – in which case you will need a

small amount of black color yarn.

ü A piece of white felt (optional) – for the whites of the eyes of the

reindeer;

ü Any stuffing;

ü Tapestry needle;

ü Single core copper electrical wire – I used approximately 50 cm (16.7

inches) of wire 1.5 mm in diameter;

ü Fabric tape 1 cm wide to work up the wire ends;

ü Transparent glue;

ü A piece of thick cardboard or plastic for the insoles;

ü Red embroidery thread for the mouth; ü Sewing pins.

Finished size Finished size approx. 14 cm (5.5 inches) tall (without antlers) using the materials stated in the pattern.

USA/UK terminology comparison chart. Abbreviations USA Abbreviations UK ch - chain ch - chain sc - single crochet dc - double crochet hdc - half double crochet

htr - half treble

dc - double crochet tr - treble tr - treble (triple crochet)

dtr - double treble

dtr - double treble tr tr - triple treble sl st - slip stitch sl - slip stitch Other differences in crochet terminology used: Terminology USA Terminology UK fasten off cast off skip miss gauge tension yarn over (yo) yarn over hook (yoh)

Tip (make it right) If there are no special notes, the toy is crocheted under both parts of the loop. In some rows, there are special notes: ‘into the front loop only’ or ‘into the back loop only’. In that case, you need to follow these instructions.

Abbreviations ch(s) = chain(s) st(s) = stitch(es) sl st = slip stitch sc(s) = single crochet(s) inc(s) = increasing(s) (2 sc in 1 st) tr = treble (triple) crochet dec(s) = decreasing(s) (2 sc together) dc = double crochet Rnd = round If there is a record in the brackets in the pattern, multiplied by some number, for example (3 sc, 1 inc) x 3, it means you need to repeat this action 3 times, that is 3 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc, 1 inc.

TIP (yarn and wire) If you use different yarn, the toy will be bigger or smaller and you will need more or less yarn and wire than stated in the pattern (i.e. thicker yarn will produce a larger toy and you may require more yarn and wire). If you decide to use thicker yarn you should buy thicker wire as well. The thicker your yarn the taller the toy will be.

Tip (gauge) When making toys, you should use a much smaller hook than recommended for the yarn you choose. Make sure you crochet tight enough; otherwise, the stuffing will show through the holes.

Tip (make it right) When making toys the right side looks like this:

And the backside looks like this:

Leg (make 2)

Tip: You can insert a wire frame in each leg before

stuffing it to make the toy more stable. Cut a piece of

wire = the length of the foot + the height of the leg +

approximately 2 cm (0.8 inches) (you can make it

longer depending on the size of the body – the more

wire there will be inside the toy, the more stable the

toy will be). Work up one wire end with fabric tape.

Bend the wire and insert it in the boot. Do not work

up the other end with fabric tape.

Start working with the boot stuffing as you go.

Tip: Make sure you inserted the wire frame first

and then stuff the leg if you plan to use the wire

frame for the legs.

Go back to Rnd 10. Hold the piece with the sole

facing you. Grab black color yarn and work a round

of sl st using the unworked front loops. Fasten off

and weave in loose ends.

Make the second leg the same way.

Arm (make 2) with black color yarn

How to make a 3-tr cluster:

Make 3 half-closed tr in one stitch. A half-closed

stitch is one that’s only worked partway, and then

finished at the end of the combination. You will end

with four loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the

yarn through all four loops on the hook. One 3-tr

cluster is complete.

Rnd 5: 6 dec (6)

Stuff the hand. Do not stuff further. Change to white

End with a sl st. Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.

Go back to Rnd 5. Holding the arm with the mitten

facing away from you, grab black color yarn and

work 1 sl st in each of the six unworked front loop.

Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Appendix

Crab stitch (Reverse Single Crochet Stitch) Crab stitch is the most popular way to finish the edge. For this stitch single crochets are worked not from right to left as usual but from left to right.

1. Finish crocheting and with the loop on the hook do not turn, insert the hook in next stitch to the right moving the hook away from you as the arrow shows.

2. Yarn over, draw yarn through stitch as the

arrow shows.

3. Yarn over, draw yarn through two loops

on the hook as the arrow shows.

4. 1 crab stitch is made, the loop is on the

hook.

5. Repeat step 2.

6. Continue till the end of the edge.
