In your prayers I communicated with all families last week informing them of the passing of Mrs Teresa Schirripa, Principal’s Personal Assistant. Mrs Schirripa commenced at Loyola in the role of Registrar in 2000 and in 2006 became the Personal Assistant to the Founding Principal Mr Kennedy. She remained in the role until her illness prevented her from continuing to work during last year. Mrs Schirripa was loyal, conscientious and hardworking, generous with her time, a woman of faith, a true Companion of Ignatius, a loving wife, mother and colleague. She will be greatly missed by the Loyola community.
We extend our deepest sympathy to her husband Rocco, daughters Talia (KKAM: 96-01) and Angela (KCR: 99-04) and to her family. Her funeral Mass was celebrated last Saturday in our St Ignatius Chapel at her request. We thank God for the gift that she was and pray that our loving God will take her to Himself in eternal peace and joy.

Mr Mathew Lee who has been appointed to the Acting Head of Science position.
College Theme for 2017 This year’s theme Setting Hearts on Fire inspires us to empower young people to venture into the world and have the courage to employ their passion in the service of others. The nature of the flame in the fire does not matter; each fire burns its own course. What matters is that it burns bright and strong.
This flame burns at the very heart of the Jesuit and Ignatian tradition - ever since 1552, when the founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius is said to have charged St Francis Xavier with these simple but powerful words: Go forth and set hearts on fire.
![Page 3: 1361 Friday 10 February 2017 - Loyola College, …1361 Friday 10 February 2017 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community, Welcome back to the new academic year. I hope that the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022070923/5fbbd333775b471e9907a46f/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
We are reminded through this year’s theme that at Loyola we are part of the mission of the Church in the modern world. We minister to each other and we set the example to our students of how they too can minister to each other and to others outside our community setting hearts on fire with a love of God.
College Dux 2016 and VCE/VCAL Results We congratulate the Year 12 students of 2016 on the excellent results they achieved last year. We will be inviting a large number of students back to the College in the coming week to acknowledge their wonderful achievements. In particular I congratulate the College Dux for 2016 Samantha Klimovski who achieved an ATAR score of 99.05. Samantha will be studying a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne.
I take this opportunity of acknowledging the hard work and effort of all our staff who worked with last year’s Year 12 students. I know that the quality teaching, guidance and support contributed greatly to the success of the group.
A full report on Year 12 results and destinations appears elsewhere in this newsletter.
Year 7, 2018 and 2019 Enrolments A reminder to all families that applications for Year 7, 2018 are now being received. The closing date is Friday 17 February for 2018 and Friday 25 August for 2019. Students in our priority parishes must have applications signed by their Parish Priest. I urge all families wishing to enrol their child at Loyola to ensure they meet the closing date deadlines. All applicants and their families will be interviewed as part of the selection process. An information evening for prospective families will be held at the College on Tuesday 14 February. Information about this can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Please take note of the two enrolment periods this year because of changes made in the enrolment practices required by the Catholic Education Melbourne office.
Last year a number of families who had children at the College missed the closing date for applications and therefore were not considered in the first round of offers. Please ensure that if you intend on enrolling another child at Loyola that you meet the enrolment application deadlines.
Uniform 2017 I remind all families of their responsibility to ensure that students have the correct uniform as set out in the 2017 Student Dress Code and abide by the Dress Code regulations. If uncertain please refer to the Student Planner. A thorough uniform check was conducted last week. Families were forewarned about this in the holidays with communication from the Deputy Principal – Students. I wish to make it quite clear that the College Student Dress Code is non-negotiable. Families who accept enrolment at the College must agree to support the Dress Code. There is therefore no excuse for students coming to school dressed or groomed in a manner that contravenes our requirements. It is the parents and guardians’ responsibility to ensure that their children are correctly attired and that their appearance is in keeping with our requirements at all times. I ask for the support of all families with regard to this matter.
Wearing of the College Blazer All families are reminded that the College blazer is the only outer garment to be worn over the uniform to and from the College. While the wearing of the blazer is optional during term one, if students are cold the blazer and not the pullover must be the outer garment worn. The pullover may be worn under the blazer for extra warmth. Students may not wear the pullover as the outer garment to and from the College.
Compulsory ACS program A reminder to all families of students in Years 7-11 that students selected to represent the College in the ACS competition are obliged to do so. Families must refrain from making any outside appointments for students on their respective ACS/LCS afternoon. Permission to be exempted from ACS sport will not be given other than for serious extenuating circumstances. Compulsory involvement in the ACS program for these year levels forms part of the terms and conditions of enrolment at Loyola.
Academic Conversations The first of this year’s Academic Conversations was held on 9 February for all year levels. The focus of these Academic Conversation was to reflect on the Semester 2 report from last year and discuss goals set by each student for this year. Discussions took place on how parents can provide support in the learning process. Parent attendance was compulsory and most families met their obligations. Follow up meetings will now be organised for those families who were unable to attend.
Capital Works Construction of the new Performing Arts Centre is now complete and students have commenced using the new building which will be officially opened on Friday 17 February at 2:30pm. Most students will be dismissed at 1:30pm that day to allow all staff to attend
![Page 4: 1361 Friday 10 February 2017 - Loyola College, …1361 Friday 10 February 2017 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community, Welcome back to the new academic year. I hope that the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022070923/5fbbd333775b471e9907a46f/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
the Opening Ceremony. About 200 students will be asked to remain in the afternoon to represent the student body at the Opening Ceremony. We are currently developing plans for the ground floor and first floor of Old Loyola formerly occupied by the Performing Arts. The ground floor will be converted to a new Staffroom and Professional Development facility of our large College staff. The first floor will be converted to classrooms helping to recoup the classrooms lost when D Block was demolished last year.
New College Bus I am delighted to announce that in November last year the College Board approved the purchase of a new 57 seater coach to add to our small fleet of buses. This additional bus will assist with the weekly transport of students and help reduce bus hiring costs for the College. Fr Steven Rigo, Chair of the Canonical Administrators of the College, blessed our buses after our staff mass last week.
As we commence another academic year we ask God’s blessings on our College community under the patronage of St Ignatius. May we be people with hearts on fire in the service of others.
I wish all a happy and most successful start to the school year.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY)
Longstanding staff member and former parent Mrs Teresa
Schirripa passed away January 29, 2017. Her funeral was
held at St Ignatius Chapel, a place she loved and was heavily
involved with in preparing it for many of the weddings that
have occurred there.
Father Rigo, the principal celebrant spoke about love and its
centrality to human existence and the main theme of the
Gospels.
“To those who are sensitive to the needs of others, life offers
innumerable opportunities to practise the commandment of
love. It is not a question of doing the big things, nor it is a
question of giving things. Rather, it is a question of giving of
oneself in little ways, giving of one’s time, energy and love.
It is not a sporadic thing. It is a way of life; and ultimately
creates within those who live it a true source of happiness.
It is this self-giving love, lived out seemingly so easily by
Teresa throughout her life which we especially remember
today”.
The College community extends its condolences to Rocco,
Talia (L:96-01), Angela (L:99-04) and the other members of
her family.
Below is the eulogy delivered by her friend, Franca Fedele.
Eulogy for Teresa Schirripa by Franca Fedele
It is my privilege to speak about the person we honour today,
Teresa Schirripa, known to me as Terri, my girlfriend.
Together over 39 years we shared our joys and lows, laughs
and tears, achievements, challenges and dreams.
We met at 21 as the young wives of Andrew and Rocco who
were best friends from the age of 12 and, as the years
progressed, they became the husbands of the best friends.
We spent so many days and nights together over coffee and
cake, moscato and eggplant chips, weekends and holidays
filled with our own brand of fun. We analysed the world’s
problems, solved the issues with Catholic Education while
supporting and helping each other with the many challenges
of motherhood.
We would laugh and giggle till we ended up snorting. We
laughed at each other and, too often, at the expense of our
husbands. Terri had this incredible gift to lighten our burdens
with her selflessness and her words of wisdom. She would
often say: “Who needs a therapist when you have a girlfriend
– and at no cost!”
Terri was fiercely loyal to her family and friends and the
Ignatian tradition. She boasted that St Ignatius Day at Loyola
was always celebrated on her birthday. It gave her such joy
to organise many details of this event while celebrating her
special day.
Terri was proud of the achievements of all her family and
friends and their children and celebrated and marked the
milestones, small or large, and in particular those of her two
girls, Talia and Angela.
She stated many times during the last few weeks that she
was satisfied with herself and felt deep in her heart that she
had done a great job as a mother and she knew her girls
would be okay. She was sure they would be sustained by all
she had shown, shared, taught and given them. Her legacy
is these two brilliant women – her precious daughters of
whom she was most proud.
Terri was extremely resilient. When life dealt her hard knocks,
she would pick herself up, dust herself off and say “It is what
it is – now move on”.
The glass was always half full and positivity was all she was
ready to listen to.
Terri loved the simple things in life: flowers, the smile of a
child, the birds that would sit on her balcony, football – how
she would have enjoyed last night [Teresa was an avid blues
fan and they won the inaugural women’s national league
match] cooking, knitting, beating us at scrabble and music.
She had a passion for all types of music – unfortunately her
only setting was full blast and many times on our drives, the
car would shake from the reverb of the radio and her singing.
I would say the EPA will be after us. She would reply with a

smile saying they would charge me for being too boring. And
so we would continue - singing, windows down enjoying the
moment, just like Thelma and Louise.
She loved to dance. Rocky and Terri danced a mean rock
and roll many times over their 41 year marriage.
Last year she went with her daughter to an Elton John
concert ‘On the Green’ at Geelong. I asked her how it all
went. She was confused that people could not groove and
dance – music and dancing were exciting and needed to go
together.
Terri was a woman of wisdom and humility, an advocate for
the underdog and the marginalised. A few years ago we
participated in a rally supporting asylum seekers. I lost her in
the crowd. Then, I spotted her at the front line of the rally, in
her Loyola staff jumper, carrying the main banner. When I
asked was she at the front to appear on the news, she said
“yes, people will notice me and know that I believe in the
importance of social justice and the need to respect all”.
Quietly and forcibly she had stated her love of others and she
celebrated the richness of diversity in our community.
On a girls’ weekend to Sydney, Terri discovered a new anti-
aging cream. Unfortunately it didn’t agree with her skin and
she suffered a nasty reaction. However, she kept asking me:
“Am I beautiful yet? Am I beautiful yet?”
“No!” I replied, “You are not beautiful. You are all blotchy and
look like a 16 year old with a zit rash”. She tossed away the
expensive cream and laughed with joy, not before she
googled the company. Her written complaint was strong and
to the point. She did not mince any words when she sent an
email. Many of us have read and enjoyed the detail and
vocabulary. After all, as a long standing PA, she knew the
importance of customer service.
“Terry I was wrong that day in Circular Quay, you were
always beautiful and inspirational.”
They say you learn about living by walking with someone who
is coming to their journey’s end and over the last 18 months
we learnt from you the importance of courage and strength
and to always enjoy each moment and breathe in life.
Your riches were the personality that beamed, your dignity
and unconditional love for us all, and for those that walked
your journey, your qualities have enriched our lives forever.
As I look around this chapel today and see it full to the brim,
I recall the many hours that Terri would stop by to open the
chapel, check on ‘that wedding’ and light the candles. I am
comforted knowing that her immense faith sustained her and
her belief in the Resurrection and the joys of paradise
welcoming her to her new life.
Terri, today in this sacred space that you loved so much, we
say “Thank you for being you, thank you until we meet again
girlfriend.
Rest in peace, ……. Catch you.”

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (ADMINISTRATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT)
2016 Ignis Medial Recipient It is wonderful that we are able to share the speech by Guiliano Spina who was our 2016 Insignis medal winner. Ignis Medal Speech by Giuliano Spina Good evening ladies and gentlemen, how are we all? I’ve seen people receive this award 5 times in my time here, and each time I’ve wondered at the work and time they have put into the college. So when I heard my name called, my reaction was one of shock. I couldn’t believe that I had done enough to be worthy of recognition, and I certainly didn’t think I had lived up to the standard set by the people who have come before me. Indeed for so many of us, I think we all see an award as the result of a single persons actions. But behind every Prime Minister, every President, every Oscar and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, there are a hundred other people who go unrecognised. So that said this award would certainly not have happened without the guidance, support and love of a long list of people, and so it’s only fair to recognise them tonight. To my family and friends you’ve stood by me through all the stresses and meltdowns of the past 18 years, as we all know I can throw a hell of a tantrum and for your constant, unwavering love I am truly blessed. You have helped me discover who I am and have pushed me out of my comfort zone countless times and I cannot thank you enough for it. To the consult, under the leadership of Mr. Favrin, I have shared a close connection with many of you over my time at the college, and I thank you for making Loyola a place of comfort, learning and development, in essence a home away from home. To my year 12 teachers, Ms. Fiona Devlin, you garnered a passion for biology and a drive for learning that I am forever grateful for. Ms Miriam Styli; for the hours of help outside the classroom and for your persistence and unwavering support in chemistry I thank you. Mr. Heath McClear, I like to think we had a blast in further, you had your hands full dealing with my loud personality but you never gave up and for all your patience, and words of motivation I am thankful. To Ms. Lauren Sinderberry, you have shown me the intricacies of the writers mind, and have taught me the hidden meaning in the world around us, thank you. Finally to Ms. Vanda Tolli, I knew the minute my name was read out that this award was your doing. You have not only pushed me beyond my limits as a performer but you have been a constant source of reason and support over the course of a very stressful year. For all your wisdom and support I am eternally thankful.
So to all these people, this award is just as much yours as it is mine, and it has been my honour and privilege to have worked beside all of you. I will never forget the time we have spent together nor the lessons you have taught me. Thank you FROM BUSINESS MANAGER
Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school and credited to the fee account to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.
The annual CSEF amount per student is: $125.00 for primary school students $225.00 for secondary school students Eligibility Date For concession card holders CSEF eligibility will be subject to the parent/guardian’s concession card being successfully validated with Centrelink on the first day of either Term one (30 January 2017) or Term two (18 April 2017). Closing Date Schools can accept parent applications up until 30 June 2017, however, parents/guardians are encouraged to lodge their application as soon as possible. FROM COLLEGE ARCHIVIST
The Loyola College Archives was establised in 2006 to capture and preserve the cultural heritage of Loyola College from its planning and establishment to present day activities. Class photographs
and snapshots of various events and activities, uniforms, newspaper articles, yearbooks and newsletters as well as plaques and trophies are just some of the items held by the Loyola College Archives. The collection also comprises materials which document the history of Old Loyola (Loyola Watsonia), constructed in 1934 and used as the Jesuit Seminary building for forty years.
Displays which focus on different aspects of the history of Loyola College are mounted each term and can be viewed in two display cabinets in Via Maxima. The artefacts, Ignatian articles, booklets
and programs, photographs etc. which are used in these changing displays are held by the Loyola College Archives for historical, research and display purposes. Two permanent displays are also located in Via Maxima exhibiting co-curriculum plaques as well as a cabinet which contains items from Loyola Watsonia.
Donations of items relating to a student or parent’s experience at Loyola College, including trophies, awards, student diaries/planners, uniforms - in fact any memorabilia that records a moment or event in the history of Loyola College since students first began classes on Tuesday 05 February 1980 is welcome. If you have any item which may be included in the collection, please contact the Loyola College Archives on 9433 0767 or email [email protected]
FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (STUDENTS)
A very warm welcome to all our families for 2017, and especially to families joining the College community for the first time.
It was pleasing to see so many students return to school with enthusiasm, and ready to commence the new academic year. It is hoped that students have settled in well and that they have organised themselves into a routine which
provides a balance between school commitments and home life.
During the course of last week, together with Mr Favrin, I spoke at each of the year level assemblies and highlighted the importance for our community to work together, and in doing so, the need to be respectful of one another and to continue developing positive relationships. I also spoke about the Ignatian challenge of using the gifts that each student has in striving for the Magis in both their studies and co-curricular activities, of being discerning about the choices they make, and creating that passion and eagerness which “sets hearts on fire”.
Since commencing the academic year, we have had the opportunity to host our annual Year 7 Family Picnic and the Year 12 Breakfast. These events are an opportunity for our students and their families to come together and celebrate the commencement of their academic year at Loyola College, in a positive spirit of community. For the Year 12 students it is a welcome to their final academic year at the College, while for the Year 7 students it is an opportunity to be welcomed into our community as they commence their journey with us at Loyola College.
We thank all those families who were able to attend both events and share the time with us.
We wish all our families the very best for this coming year. Together let us “set hearts on fire”. (St Ignatius of Loyola)
FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (TEACHING AND LEARNING)
Welcome back to all of our students and in particular to all of our new students and their parents and guardians. We are all looking forward to working with you and your children in 2017. We have many new positive and exciting initiatives to implement in 2017.
Companion Learning (the Loyola College Learning Management System) This year Parents and Students will have online access to resources, class pages, and assessment calendars and to their teachers for every class. They will also be able to access their timetable and the College calendar. Please ask your child to show you their ‘Companion Learning’ page.
Academic Companions and Academic Conversations In 2017, as part of our ongoing commitment to working with our students and parents, we are also continuing with Academic Companions. The Academic Conversations along with Parent Student Teacher Interviews will allow the parent, student and Academic Companion more time to reflect

meaningfully on the student’s learning, their academic goals and strategies for continual improvement. The Academic Conversation program will support our current House Mentor system. The role of the Academic Companion is to assist and support the student by providing opportunities for the student to learn from their successes and failures. The Academic Companion will also assist the parent/guardian in recognising that their level of parental engagement influences the success of their child’s learning goals and academic success.
Research recognises the significant role that parents/guardians play in the academic success of their children, and we believe that this change to how we conduct our Parent Student Teacher Interviews will provide new opportunities to focus on more parent engagement both at school and at home. In the past, parents and teachers have always been in contact with each other outside the formal Academic Conversations and Parent Student Teacher Interviews and this will continue in the normal manner in 2017. Subject teachers welcome any contact via email or phone when there is a need. The new Companion Learning LMS will also provide more opportunity for more effective communication.
Assessment It is important that our students commence well and form excellent study habits not only at school but also at home. To assist with their time management and organization skills, all students (Year 7 to 12) will have received an assessment calendar for each subject that outlines the task, when it will be assessed and the value of the task. Please ask your child to see the assessment calendars that they have received as you may find it helpful when discussing with your child what they have been learning at school in the early part of this term and when things are due. These calendars can also be accessed on the student’s Companion Leaning page.

At Loyola College, we have a detailed assessment policy that includes the principles behind assessment and the practices that we use. We recognise that assessment is an essential element of the process of learning as it allows students to understand where their learning is going, allows them to have clear expectations of what is expected of them through their learning, provides valuable feedback for ongoing learning and informs our parent community of their child’s progress.
At Loyola College, we have a consistent approach to assessment. All subjects will formally assess between two and five tasks that will be reported on. This does not include homework or other learning activities that may occur throughout the semester. Subject teachers devise the assessment program at the beginning of the course when they conduct their planning of the semester’s work.
A new initiative at Loyola College for Years 7 – 9 this year will be the option for students to re-submit assessment work (not exams) when it falls below 55%. Every student who has submitted work of a standard of below 55% will receive a Letter of Concern along with the option to re-submit an assessment piece to redeem their original mark to the maximum of 55%. At Loyola we believe learning is an ongoing process and that academic conversations need not end once an assessment piece is submitted.
Each student in Years 7 – 9 will need to make contact with their Subject Teacher and discuss what is required for a better outcome. The onus us on the student to collect the assessment piece, make a time with their Subject Teacher to go over the work and re-submit within the set time frame. Please encourage your child to take the option of re-submission.
Heads of Learning in 2017 This year we will continue to keep our community fully informed of the terrific learning that occurs at Loyola College. There will also be important information for you to digest concerning the different activities affecting each year level. I would like to introduce you to our Heads of Learning,

FROM HEAD OF HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Health and Physical Education Health and Physical Education is an integral part of your child’s education. It provides opportunities, many other subjects on the curriculum do not. Students are placed in challenging and unfamiliar situations and are required to problem solve (tactics) and work as a team in order to achieve the desired outcome. Students are taught to work within a larger team environment, a skill all workplaces desire. Student leadership is developed through the various roles undertaken within the class. Equally as importantly students are physically active for an hour during our lessons. The National Health and Physical Activity Guidelines recommend adolescents are physically active for at least 60 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity each day. Through active involvement in Physical Education classes students are meeting this guideline and positively impacting their health. Student will be undertaking the following units in years 7-9; Year 7 - Tennis Year 8 - Athletics Year 9 - Game sense electives Hats, Hats, Hats! In terms 1 and 4 hats are a compulsory uniform item. Sunscreen is optional and will be provided by the school, however, it is not a substitute for the College hat. Please ensure your child has a College hat, and if they have misplaced it, please check lost property before purchasing a new College hat.

FROM HEAD OF MANNIX HOUSE
Mannix House News Welcome back to a new year! I hope all families had a safe and happy Christmas period and that their students were happy to come back to school. I know from speaking with some parents, that the parents were happy for the students to come back to school!
In 2017, we have two new mentor teachers; Mrs Jenny Murray who has a long association at Loyola as a senior Business teacher and is taking over from Mr Scott Lucas who has left the College. We wish Mrs Murray well with the care of the students of M/JMM (formerly M/SOL). Mr Nick Williamson joins Loyola College as the Director of Music and has taken over Mr Michael Brown’s mentor, with Mr Brown having returned home to live in the United Kingdom. Mr Williamson joins Mannix House with a wealth of experience built up over many years in many schools, most recently Presentation College in Windsor. We wish Mr Williamson all the best and know he will take great care of the students in M/NHW (formerly M/MCB).
Our Mannix House Captains for 2017 are Isla Leary and Matthew Caton. Both students are outstanding leaders, very personable and committed to making Mannix House the best House it can be in 2017.
All Mannix House staff wish the Mannix families a safe and prosperous 2017. We know that there will be many challenges along the way and that being a teenager is a difficult part of one’s life for most of us. We are committed and determined to provide best possible care of your students and ensure that the road ahead is one that is filled with many successes and joys.
As always, if there is anything that the family believes a member of the Mannix team knowing would be beneficial, please do not hesitate to contact either the mentor, or myself, the Head of House. Contact via phone or email is both welcomed and a prompt reply is always aimed for.
Wishing you all a great year.
FROM ICT MANAGER
ICT News Supported CYOD for Year 11 and 12 students Please be advised it is the expectation that all Year 11 and 12 students bring a CYOD digital device to class. CYOD stands for ‘Choose Your Own Device’ from the list of recommended devices, which is as follows:

Please note that Internet download limits do not apply. However, ICT Acceptable Use Policy rules still mandate that
Internet is to be used for school related purposes only. All Internet use is monitored and the system automatically chokes the bandwidth of any student who is over-utilising bandwidth.
The following H: network drive hard disk space limits apply: 500 MB – Years 7 through 10 2 GB – Year 11 6 GB – Year 12
At the start of each term students are allocated the following printing/photocopying credits:
$10.00 of printing credit
Note that the students need to enter their network login and password to use the printer/photocopier in the iCentre before using it to photocopy. Students may purchase extra credit at Loyola Reception. Credit rates are as follows:
$5.00/$10.00 for printing credit. Please note that the printing charges are calculated as follows:
10 cents per page for A4, black and white 20 cents per page for A4, colour 20 cents per page for A3, black and white 80 cents per page for A3, colour
These credit limits may be reviewed and varied from time to time as necessary.
Students will be able to see what printing credit is left when they are logged into the school network. Before printing credit runs out, students need to go to Loyola Reception to pay ($5.00/$10.00) for more credit, bringing with them the exact change. Students will be issued with a receipt, a copy of which will go to the ICT Helpdesk (iCentre) so that the printing credit can be increased accordingly.
Please support Loyola College in its drive to reduce its Carbon Footprint. Please note that all student home drives on the network are wiped clean at the end of each academic year.

RELAY FOR LIFE
Diamond Valley Relay For Life Saturday 25 March 1:00pm - Sunday 26 March 10:00am
2017
Candlelight Ceremony: 8:00pm Saturday 25 March 2017
Willinda Park, Athletics Track Beatrix Street, Greensborough
Relay for Life is an amazing overnight event in which people from a local community, join together in teams to form a continual relay in order to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who lost their battle to cancer and fight back against a disease which robs people of their lives.
It is a unique event where team members challenge themselves to take turns to keep their team baton moving either in a walk or run through the night. The more people involved in each team, the easier the relay becomes and the more enjoyable the experience. This event is held at Willinda Park Athletics Track in Greensborough.
The atmosphere is livened by free entertainment, prizes and ceremonies which make Relay for Life so inspirational.
Since 2011, Loyola College has entered a team consisting of students, teachers, families and friends into Relay for Life. The money raised for the Cancer Council was worth every step taken
by those who shared the relay. Our team has grown in numbers since then and we would like to see as many members of the Loyola College community participate this year.
There are no age limits or fitness requirements for those wishing to participate in this year’s Relay for Life and we invite all members of the Loyola College community to help us make the 2017 Relay for Life another successful event. You can stay for the whole event, camp overnight or just come for a short time and join in the fun.
Loyola students are asked to wear their PE uniforms as they are representing the school.
To enter, log onto www.relayforlife.org.au and follow the prompts to join the Loyola College Team (in the Diamond Valley relay location) or choose the Team Captains’ name, Mrs Donna Bedrac, in an effort to help fight Cancer. Early bird registrations cost $20.00 up until the 26 February. After this date, the cost of registration will be $25.00 from 27 February. Online registrations can be made until Friday 17 March, or you can still register on the day at Willinda Park.
Parents please note that students will not be under the active supervision or responsibility of Loyola College staff during the weekend.
Join us to make a difference and raise money for the Cancer Council in order to find a cure.
For more information, please contact Mrs Donna Bedrac on 0422 639 041 or Mrs Miriam Stylli on 9433 0792 or [email protected]
Who will you relay for?

FROM STUDENT PROGRAMS COORDINATOR YEARS 7-9
A warm welcome to all our new and returning students to Loyola College – especially our new Year 7 students who commenced their secondary school journey on February 01.
It has been a successful start to the year with students navigating their timetables, working out where to go, what to bring, what to wear and most importantly, who to ask! We encourage our students (and their parents) to ask questions and clarify any uncertainty by emailing their Mentors, subject teachers, Academic Companions or Heads of House. The special program offered to our Year 7 students to help them adjust to the secondary school environment in their first few days was embraced with enthusiasm. The Family picnic was lots of fun and it was wonderful to meet many new (and old) parents and siblings.
Our College endeavours to build a welcoming school community, which provides an inclusive and safe environment focussed on students’ wellbeing, achievement, creativity and enjoyment. We want every student to feel valued and encouraged to do their best. Throughout the year there are many special programs and activities that will enable students to try new things, develop new skills and participate in a wide range of experiences. We ask parents to encourage their children to be open and willing to participate in the many co-curriculum activities offered by the school.
Students need to check their emails, class pages and the daily information bulletins to be informed and prepared for the many programs and activities on offer.
Parent engagement in their child’s learning and involvement in the school is a strong foundation for student achievement. The parent-school partnership, facilitated by timely and effective communication, helps to build an environment of student-centred learning, developing in each student their unique skills, talents and potential.
For parents who are new to the Secondary school experience, I encourage you to look up the Parent Handbook for Victorian Catholic Secondary Schools

If the spirit of the Year 7 students and their families over the first weeks is any guide, the year promises to be fantastic!
FROM HEAD OF CO-CURRICULUM
Welcome to all of our new and continuing students and families in 2017!
We have another exciting year ahead of us in co-curriculum at Loyola College. This week our year 7 and 8 students have all visited our Co-Curriculum Expo, where we showcase the activities on offer this year. All students have begun signing up for activities by clicking “Join here” on the Co-Curriculum page on the LMS.
Students are keen to accrue their representation and involvement points and contribute to their House Shield total. They have been checking the points allocation for each activity via the Student Co-Curriculum handbook, which is available to parents and students via the LMS.
Of course, there is much interest in joining our music and performing arts programs that are making use of the new Magis Performing Arts Centre. With preparations for our College Musical and Autumn Sounds music concert underway, we are sure to see the showcasing of many of Loyola College’s talents in the near future.
Parents are advised that the contact details for staff running activities is available in the student handbook. Please direct any specific enquiries about activities to the staff member responsible for the activity.
We look forward to seeing our Loyola students actively engaged in all of our co-curriculum opportunities this year.
Friends of Performing Arts (FOPA) Loyola College is seeking expressions of interests from parents and friends that may be interested in joining the FOPA committee or volunteering their time to support performing arts at Loyola College. With our new Magis Performing Arts Centre now in use, we are excited about the upcoming events that will be taking place at the College, and would appreciate any support and assistance that our Loyola community can provide to our students.

Welcome back to another school year in what we hope will be just as successful as 2016.
I wish to formally thank and commend Our 2016 Year 12 cohort who have achieved some amazing results. I am very proud of each and every student who is now one step closer to achieving their future successes within their chosen career paths.
The students worked extremely hard in 2016 and the data produced for our school shows just how much they are driven to achieve success.
We have 96.21% of the 2016 cohort successfully enrolled to study at tertiary level both University and Tafe. The most popular area of study in 2017 is Health Sciences related disciplines. These courses prepare graduates for jobs in Physiotherapy, Nursing, Osteopathy and PE teaching to name a few.
Other popular study disciplines included Sciences, Education, Law and Construction.
Other students have taken up apprenticeships, work or decided to have a Gap Year.
Below is graph advising where some of our students are studying this year.
I would like to wish all of our students a successful 2017. Remember working hard truly does pay off!
