ONE

The Foundations

The book that you are holding in your hands represents a

corpus of literature that forms the very heart of the Euro

pean esoteric tradition.

In the last twenty-five years or so, books on "magic" have

concentrated largely on Kabbalism, Jungian psychology or

the "neo-paganism" of so-called "Wicca." But for the three

centuries following the Renaissance, the serious practice of

magical art consisted essentially of the kind of systems

collected in this book.

This material repre sents what is normall y c onsi dered

"b lack mag ic, " since the spirits it pretends to consor t wit h

are admittedly demons. It is also, as we intend to show,

transcendental magic, since the practitioner places his very

soul and mind on the line (in traditional belief at least) in

order to become more than a man: To achieve the power of

a Magus.

Grimoire an d The Constitution of Honoriusfirst saw

some kind of general distribution between the end of the

seventeenth century in France, during the twilight of the

reign of Loui s xiv , and the middle of the century followi ng.

While the Church triumphed over the religious hermeti-

cists of the renaissance, it can hardly be said to have elimi

nated the practice of sorcery, or for that matter, to have

even slowed it down.
