LIBRARY NOTES AND NEWS

The genealogy section of the library is becoming a very popular place! The increased use is causing some problems for the library staff so they have asked us to please observe the following rules to make it easier for them and also for us.

1. Before going to the basem8nt, wait at the outer desk until a library staff member gives you permission and has you sign the register.

2. Do not stop in the passageway to the basement as this creat~s a traffic-flow problem for the staff.

3. Tell a librarian if you wish to talk with Karen , and whe l'lill come to your assistance in the reading room and/or the basement.

Remember that the library serves others besides us genealogy 'nuts' and the 1 ibrary stuff has a lot of VJork they must accompl ish each day. The best way we can show our appreciation for their help to us is to I'/o r k with them in solving prnblems that affect us both.

KANSAS, Lowell, Riverton and Quaker Valley

Quaker Valley is situated in an "L" shaped area bounded on the east by Spring River and extending about 4 miles north of the bend of the river as it joins Shoal Creek and moves westward and southward to\~ard Baxter Springs. The valley is about 3 miles wide at the northernmost part anG narrowing at the southern end where the settlement of Riverton is located. Just across the bend of the river is the picturesque settlement of Lowell, also a Quaker community.

Lowell is the oldest settlement of the county. In 1835 several Quarter-~reeds came from Georgia to settle with the original tribes but failed to get along peaceably, so pulled away and settled ,in this part of the present county. One of these was John Rogers and he located where Lowell is now situated.

Immediately following the Civil ~~ar there was an influx of Quakers into the area. Many of the Friends had previously lived in other parts of Kansas, several having come from the Quaker settlements at Shawnee Mission in Johnson Co. and near Lawrence and Leavenworth. Others went to Lyon Co. first and came on to Quaker Valley later. I·'ost of these early settlers came originally from Indiana, descendants of those Quakers who had moved down the Valleys of the Appalachians from their original homes in Pennsylvania to the sparsely settled hills of lvest Virginia and North Carol ina. Others came from Iowa and Ohio, and a few were sent from the east as missionaries and stayed to make their home in Kansas. Among the first was the John Hayworth family who located in Quaker Valley in 1865. Others were the Meekers, Hodsons, Carters, Pcarsons, Osburns, and Harveys.

Lowell quickly became a "thriving community" with flour mills, (one built in 1872 by ~Jilliam Morgan of Indiana), a sawmill, and at one time a knitting mill in operation on the east side of the dam used by r'lorgan Mill. Near the r~organ Mill, a George Wheeler made knives for the residents of the early settlement. Old-timers tell the story that liquor was never sold in Lowell and when an intoxicated person happened to appear it was a town scandal. At one time, the community's general store did not even sell tobacco of any kind because the Quaker proprietor frowned ,upon its use.

At various times there were several publications printed. Printing equipment was owned by Chillon H. Carter, one of the residents of Quaker Valley. He published two publications, one during 1878 and 1879, and The Hestern Friend, began in 1879 and continued for about nine years. In addition, Chillon H. Carter was the first postmaster in Quaker Valley, helped in mission work in a colored settlement at Timbered Hills, conducted the Carter I,lission for over ten years, and was proprietor of the Quaker Valley Nursery.

The first Lowell school was started before the Civil Har and so far as is known the first school bu ilding was erected on "Schoolhouse Hill" overlooking the convergence of Shoal Creek and Spring River. Cy 1868 there 11as still only one teacher and one room, homemade seats and desks for the fifty or sixty pupils. Reading, spelling, writing, grammar, bookkeeping and algebra were taught in the school which was ungraded. Each term the pupils started at the beginning of the textbooks used.

School for the children of the first Quaker Valley settlers was held in a log meeting house. It was organized as Cherok~e County School district No 5 in 1867 or 1868, and was known as the Mitchell school. ;Soon after this a frame building was erected aboutone~half .mile west of what is now Riverton. During the seventies it is known that there were summer and fall terms in the Lostine school , north of Riverton, 2 miles.

In the early period of Quaker Valley history there w~re several . post offices in the vicinity. Hhen the railroad was built from Joplin to 8axter Springs in the middle seventies, a post office ~Ias established in a building just north of the present Riverton Post Office l ocation. iJhen Postmaster Varrick of Baxter Springs was asked for suggestions for a name, he 'Jave the new office the Eng1 ish spell ing of his name, Varck. It is not known \~hen Varck was changed to Riverton. One of the early Quakervale post offices was established in 1878 or 1879 in the hDme of Enoch Carter with his son, Chil1on, as postmaster. The first post office used by some residents of the Valley as early as 1868, was in the home of Hi 11 iam H. Peters just north of ~Ihere the Mi ssouriKansas-Texas railroad crossed the 11ilitary Road.

The most interesting old building yet standing in La_well is the Quaker academy. Built in 1891 by the Quakers as an institution of higher learning similar to the high schools of today, it was called tho Lowell Polytechnic Institute. This white frame structure stands in the same place today but the interior has been remodeled to serve as a church building. South across the street stood another white building, or iginally used both as a dormitory and a 1 ibrary for the school with a well-equipped chemistry room in the basement. For many years this building was used as -a parsonage. Those who assisted in establishing this academy were mathematicians from Illinois University who brought a large telescope which was very useful in the phYSical sciences. Special emphasis was placed on astronomy.

In 1894, the Southeast Kansas Astronomical Society was organized with three divisi ons, one in GAlena, one in Baxter Springs , and one in LO\~ell and Quaker Valley. Each division was to have the telescope four months a year, including one schoo l month. Shares of the stock were sold for ten dollars and twenty shares were guaranteed by Lowell and Quaker Valley. The stockholdrs and their families were to have free use of the telescope which was "not less than six inches."

The first princi pal of the academy which opened in 1893, was Pliny E. Godda rd, who l at er became Indian curator in a Hew York city museum. Teachers were guaranteed a certain sum, usually a bout six hundred do llars , for the school year of nine months. Graduates of the Lowell Po lytechnic Institute were admitted by di pl oma to the state university and o th~ r colleges of the Central Associati on.

Certain requirements had t o be met by the students. Each was t o pay about forty do ll ars tuition and furnish references of good moral character. At the school they ~/e re t o keep regular hours and no use of t obacco was all owed.

The academy never enjoyec sufficient patrona ge and with the rise of the public hi gh school, was forc ed t o cl ose . It was abando ned as an academy in 1904 and converted into the Lowell Friends Church and is still in us e t oday.

A log meeting house , one-quarter of a mile west of the present Fri ends Church in Riverton, on land bel onging t o Noah Harvey, was the first church buil ding in southeastern Kansas. By 1869 it was t oo small for the quarterly meetings so a new frame buil ding, thirty-six ~y forty- ei ght feet , was built one-half mil e further west on a hill which furnished a better site for a cemetery. This new building was equi pped with "shutter" for the pur po se of sepa rating the mens and women's sessi ons .

In the early 1870's, a movement to erect a bi gger and better schoo l in Quaker Vall ey bega n and Benjamin Dixon went back east on a successful tri p t o obt ain money for the project. Five acres of land for the academy were do nated by Benjamin F. Dixon and his wife, Hannah. The academy was built of native sandstone , most of which ~/as quarri ed from Townsend hills, two miles fr om the buil ding site . Much of the la bor was do nat ed by the men of the vall ey. The schoo l opened t o students in 1880 and was cl osed in 1912.

The new buil ding was three stories high , 40 feet wi de and 70 feet l ong. The first fl oor was us ed for meeting pur poses, with a riSing wall in the center t o divi de the room and thus ~,ro vi d e a secti on for the men on one si de and the women on the other. When it became necessary t o accommodate a 1 arger cro.wd , the wa 11 was 1 i fted and the two rooms became one .

The second fl oo r was used for .a school room, equi pped with double desks and .two l ong recitation benches at the ·front . The third fl oo r was used for a boys do rm and was built with do rmer windows through the roo f t o provi de light.

The master of the school lived in a frame , two-story ell add iti on on the north end of the main buil ding. This structure also housed the girls durmitory, which was supervised by the master's wife.

On the west side of the original building was a wide porch or gallery. This provided a meeting place for people to visit together before and after worship services. One of the outstanding attractions of the old building was the "carriage landing" which consisted of steps at a convenient height for carriage passengers to alight from their vehicles and enter the building.

After the development in the Quaker Church of the two factions, the conservatives and the progressives, the' progressives built a new church building and the old academy was retained hy the conservative branch of the church.

The old Quaker CemE!tery is located about one-half mile \~est of the present Friends Church, which is one-half mile north of Riverton. The Lowell Cemetery is about one and one-half miles south of Lowell. The is also a small cemetery at Rest-A-While, just across the river from Riverton. The Galena Library has records of these cemeteries.

Recently r~arjo rie Patton bought an old Family Al bum at on auction. It is covered with red velvet and has copper trim. It is believed t o have belonged to a ,Ieaver family who lived near Fairland.

f4arj orie would 1 ike VEry much t o see this returned to the family, and asks only to be reimbursed for what she spent. There are a lot of pictures but only a coupl e of them are named and not 'Ieaver. You can contact Marjorie at 918 542-8550- if you are interested or know someone who might be .

PLATES, SPOONS, AND KNIVES

China, silver, and glass rarely allpeared on the earlist colonial tables--though in the eighteenth century they were eagerly acquired -by the well-to-do. In ordinary homes, those at the head of the table -might each rate a pewter plate, but the lower-ranking diners ate from wooden ,trenchers, rectangular shaped so that two could conveniently share o'ne. No second clean plate was offered , but it was quite de Jt.i.gu.e.uJt t o turn one's trencher face down and eat from "the pie side".

Not until the nineteenth century was it bad manners to use one's knife. As f or forks, Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts Bay Col ony brought one with him across the ocean and for years it was probably the only fork in New England. Everyone else ate with spoons --pewter ones or perhaps clamshells fastened to wooden handles.

t10st meat ws served as "spoo n meat," that is, cut small and pounded by the cook and boiled for hours in hope of making it tender. Even roasts, which came t o the table on huge pewter "chargers" were first cut into bite-size pieces, t o be speared with the point of a knife. (9)
