East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is certified by the state as the only Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center in East Tennessee. Our mission is to improve the health of children through exceptional, comprehensive family-centered care, wellness and education. The goal of our School Nurse Conference is to put that mission into action in the community. Specifically, the conference seeks to enhance the knowledge of school nurses regarding management of common childhood illnesses and injuries, and to provide school nurses with updated information about changes in nursing care for children with chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]).

Course objectivesBy attending this conference, you should be able to:

1. Describe five common mental health diagnoses encountered by school nurses.

2. Recognize immediate safety steps when an active shooter is suspected in the school setting.

3. Describe common skin conditions in school-age children.

4. Relate nutrition and diabetes to a child in the school setting.

5. Describe the assessment of and treatment for childhood ADHD.

6. Describe management of common pediatric dental emergencies.

This activity will provide 6.0 contact hours.

East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Tennessee Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Coming from downtown Knoxville:1. Take the ramp to I-275 N.2. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for I-275 N/Lexington

and merge onto I-275 N.3. Continue on I-275N and merge onto I-75 N.4. Take exit 110 for Callahan Drive.5. Turn left (westbound) onto Callahan Drive and go for

approximately 1 mile.6. Turn left at Jubilee Center Way.7. Jubilee Banquet Facility is at the back of the strip mall.

Coming from I-75 northbound (Chattanooga):1. Take I-75 N to I-40 East.2. Take 1-40 E to I-275 N.3. Follow directions 2 to 7 from the first set of directions.

Jan Neece, Ph.D. Dr. Neece is a pediatric psychologist at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Kentucky and a doctorate from Texas A&M University. She has worked in college counseling centers, in private practice and at Cherokee Health Systems during the course of her career.

Steve Bohanan, C.H.S.S. Bohanan is Chief of Security for East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. He has been with the hospital for 14 years and has 26 years combined security and law enforcement experience. He is a certified healthcare security supervisor through the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety. He holds certifications in personal safety training, firearms, tactical response training and hazardous materials response.

Sophia Hendrick, M.D. Dr. Hendrick graduated from the University of Texas Medical School and completed her residency in dermatology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She is certified in both dermatology and pediatric dermatology. She has practiced with Dermatology Specialists since 2001 and has more than 30 years of experience.

Juliann Chavez, Ph.D., R.D., L.D.N. Dr. Chavez received her bachelor’s degree in scientific nutrition and master’s degree in nutrition with a minor in sociology at Texas A&M University. She completed her doctoral degree in child and family studies in 2009 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Chavez has been at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital since 2003, where she is responsible for community nutrition education, providing nutrition classes at the hospital and seeing patients in the Diabetes Clinic.

Jacob Levy, Ph.D. Dr. Levy is a licensed psychologist and Director of the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Levy also maintains a private practice at the Behavioral Medicine Institute where he specializes in the assessment and treatment of ADHD.

Drew Osborn, D.D.S. Dr. Osborn received his dental degree from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He completed his first general dental residency in San Diego, Calif. He was in solo practice for three years in the U.S. Navy before completing a pediatric dental residency at Denver Children’s Hospital. Dr Osborn maintains a private practice as well as serving on staff at several local hospitals and assisting with the dental residency program at UT Medical Center.
