There are many who have fought and survived, including Jane’s mother and we lend our full support to bringing awareness and resources to the con-tinued fight. Our participation is in honor of all those who have passed or survived, but also for the fights to come. We look forward to a great Race for a great cause. Thank you and let’s win this Race for the Cure!”

Janssen was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and started playing professional hockey in 2002. That year, he was drafted by the New Jersey Devils and six years later, on February 26, 2008, he returned to his hometown, being traded to St. Louis for Bryce Salvador. “I’m so excited to be a part of the 2011 Race for the Cure! Alton Memorial HospitalYou’ve Got a Friend ProgramMalea Watson, Breast Health Navigator, (618) 463-7750http://www.altonmemorialhospital.org/This is the 1st year of Affiliate funding for this program. The You’ve Got a Friend program lets women know that they are not alone in the fight against breast cancer. The Breast Health Navigator acts as a patient advocate by providing education, support, and interventions that promote early detection of breast cancer. The navigator interacts with a diverse community to support collaboration between patients, internal and external health care providers and outside agencies and organizations. The navigator will serve as liaison between the patient and physician to quickly facilitate follow-up care and will follow the patient through treatment, working with a multidisciplinary team to determine the best plan of care. In addition to serving as an ally to women who are undergoing diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer, the navigator will be a champion for proactive breast health – targeting low-income women in our community.

Barnes-Jewish Hospitalthe Daylight ProjectEva Enoch, Project Manager, (314) 747-5688http://www.bjc.org/ This is the 9th year of Affiliate funding for this program. The Daylight Project delivers linguistically and culturally ap-propriate education to refugee and new immigrant women about breast health and the benefits of early detection of breast cancer. Trained Wisewomen offer knowledge and referrals for screening and care through a unique “inreach” model that is seamlessly woven into the daily rhythm of each community. This approach, reaching 1,500 women, overcomes communications and cultural challenges that often prevent them from accessing breast health care. Daylight staff accompany women along the screening, diagnostic, and treatment continuum, in coordination with Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s Breast Health Outreach Program, providing language interpretation, navigation, and other ser-vices. Building on these efforts, we are initiating a new program component to reach deaf women this year.

Barnes-Jewish Hospitalnavigating the Safety net: Paving Smooth Pathways to Care for underserved PeopleSusan Kraenzle, RN, Clinical Manager, (314) 454-7620http://www.siteman.wustl.edu/This is the 12th year of Affiliate funding for this program.

Navigating the Safety Net: Paving Smooth Pathways to Care for Underserved People will reach 3,200 unique, underserved, low-income patients in all counties served by the Affiliate. The program’s highest priorities are compassionate care, seamless transitions within a fragmented system, and reducing the num-ber of never-screened individuals and late-stage diagnoses. Services are provided along the complete continuum of breast care, from education, outreach, and screening through follow up, diagnosis, and treatment. To overcome barriers to access, a mobile mammography van travels throughout the area. Screening, diagnostic follow up, and treatment are provided at Siteman Cancer Center. Intensive outreach efforts and 30 educational events throughout the region motivate women to accept breast health services. Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health CentersPeople’s Sister ConnectionLanisha Thomas, Patient Navigator, (314) 367-7848 x 1277http://www.phcenters.org/This is the 9th year of Affiliate funding for this program.

Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers (PHC) “People’s Sister Connection” will utilize navigation as an instrument to reach a target population of 2,484 St. Louis City and County medically underserved and/or uninsured women. Our patient navigator will support 750 women navigating the healthcare system to receive mammograms. The patient navigator will reduce barriers, provide education and resource information as well as remain in touch with women by telephone, mailers, offer letters, outreach activities, coupons, and support groups. PHC expects to provide 750 clinical breast exams and screen-ing mammograms to medically underserved and/or uninsured women ages 40-49.

GTH also arranges testing and treatment for individuals genetically at high risk for breast cancer. Our nurse managers connect patients to a full continuum of treatment, including lumpectomy or mastectomy, breast reconstruction, chemotherapy and/or radiation, drug therapy and genetic testing, at no cost to them through our partners and providers who donate their services. Our outreach program educates the community about GTH so more individuals can receive treatment. Grace Hill will strive to increase the rate of early detection of breast cancer by expand-ing the in-reach and education efforts targeted to over 8,700 of its current female patients, as well as over 2,000 additional women. Funding will be used to address system changes, in-cluding allocating a provider to clinical breast exams for “Mam-mogram Days.” By increasing staff knowledge and skill, Grace Hill is able to provide education and support services. These efforts will result in over 1,000 women receiving clinical breast exams and screening mammography services in the grant year.

Missouri Baptist Medical Centerthe MBMC Breast HealthCare Center Reaching the under-servedTheresa Taylor, Outreach Coordinator, (314) 996-7585http://www.breasthealthcarecenter.org/This is the 10th year of Affiliate funding for this program.

The Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist Medical Center (MBMC) continues to be a strong leader with its com-mitment to reach out to uninsured and under-insured women. We will provide increased access to breast screening services as well as education, prevention, and early detection of breast cancer by providing screening and diagnostic mammograms. These services are provided in the Breast HealthCare Center and on our digital mobile mammography van for at risk women ages 40 - 64. Follow up services are provided at the Breast HealthCare Center for women with mammography abnormali-ties. The educational component provides knowledge about the importance of early detection of breast cancer by screen-ing. These educational events are held in our service areas of St. Louis City and County along with eleven rural communities which include: Jefferson, St. Francois, Warren, Ste. Genevieve, Perry, Lincoln, Madison, Washington, Franklin, St. Charles, and Montgomery County. With Affiliate funding, MBMC plans to educate and screen over 600 women in the current grant year.

Puentes de esperanzaIniciativa de Salud para Mujeres (Women’s Health Initiative)Nereida Avendaño, Director, (618) 398-0557http://www.hoyleton.org/ This is the 4th year of Affiliate funding for this program.

Puentes de Esperanza’s mission is to enhance the qual-ity of life within the Metro East’s Latina community. Due to a number of barriers, Hispanic and Latino women are typically screened for breast cancer later than other women, resulting in lower survival rates. Lack of ID/documentation exacerbates the problem. Through an intense, culturally sensitive outreach, education and support effort, our program eliminates barriers, increases breast cancer awareness and the number of Latinas who receive screening and diagnostic services. We expect to contact/assist 420 women through this program – most of whom would not otherwise receive services. In doing so, we hope to instill a sense of need for preventive healthcare and enable our clients to independently seek the services they need.

A breast cancer diagnosis creates economic hardship for many facing the disease. Unexpected expenses and employment interruptions during the course of treatment add a huge finan-cial toll to the already difficult struggle. The Bridging the Gap Emergency Breast Cancer Fund seeks to lessen the burden on people with breast cancer by providing emergency short-term financial assistance to those in need, to help cover house-hold bills and living expenses. Not worrying about unpaid bills will help recipients to better focus on treatment, healing, and recovery. During our third year, we hope to expand the program to serve approximately 300 recipients, up 120 from our second year’s projection.

Saint Louis universityeducating Women About Hereditary Risk for Developing Breast CancerSuzanne M. Mahon, RN, DNSc, AOCN, Professor, (314) 577-8854http://www.slu.edu/cancer-center.xml This is the 10th year of Affiliate funding for this program.

An estimated 10% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a hereditary predisposition and are at substantial risk for a second breast cancer; 50% of their first degree relatives also carry a very high risk (92%) for developing early onset breast cancer. The established Hereditary Cancer Program at Saint Louis University provides comprehensive education and coun-seling regarding the potential risks, benefits, and psychosocial ramifications of genetic testing as well as recommendations to detect cancer early, and prevent cancer by using appropriate strategies including prophylactic surgery. This year the program will continue to improve and expand the existing Hereditary Cancer Program by providing education and counseling to 100 new at-risk families and continuing to provide services to an estimated 75 established families.
