Learning to read is one of the most important things your child will learn at our school. Everything else depends on it, so we put as much energy as we possibly can into making sure that every single child learns to read at Grange. The ability to read is a key life skill. As a school we use a selection of strategies to enable children to become skilled readers. Phonics is a tool we teach to help children learn to read but it is by no means the only skill children require to be fluent readers. Your child’s reading experience is much

more than the reading book which comes home from school. Reading is happening all the time in the classroom. It is taught in specific reading and English lessons, but children are practising and using their ‘reading’ constantly across all subjects too.

We want your child to love reading – and to want to read for themselves. This is why we work hard to make sure children develop a love of books as well as simply learning to read. Last week at Grange we celebrated a week of reading culminating in a Book day. Events throughout the week were based round reading including different members of staff (office staff, cleaners, LSAs, teachers) reading a variety of stories to pupils across the school. We also had visiting story teller who read cultural stories to all our pupils and to parents/carers and their children at end of the week. Have a read of the wonderful accounts in this week’s newsletter. Please read frequently with your children, asking them questions whilst they read and encouraging them to read things round the house, out in the community etc.

Jazmin: Right now I’m reading a story called ‘The goose that laid the golden egg.’ I read through the whole book, it was funny, I liked the book I want to read it again. The story teller was using her imagination and she was making us use our imagination. When I was listening to the stories it was interesting, our stories took us to Mexico and Bolivia.

Kate: I dressed up as ‘The Cat in the Hat’, I wore a tall hat that was red and white, I also wore a large red bowtie. ‘The Cat in the Hat’ is my favourite book. Walnut Class

We came into school in mufti which was cool because Lucas was a Spanish Matador and

Kaschan was a Chinese dragon. During the morning, Elm and Willow Class got to visit Spain and Australia! We heard about the Medio Pollito; a Spanish folktale about the origin of the rooster on a weather vane. He was a half-chick who went on lots of adventures, but because he was too selfish to help others he ended up on a rooftop, being spun by the wind. It is a tale used to explain the origin of the chicken on a weather vane. We had to make sure we were safe when the carpet was flying and we got to join in with the actions and repeated words in the story. What a fun morning! At the end of the day, some of us got to go back to see Terri with our mums and dads to hear a story.

Ben – I loved the carpet and the fun stories. It was overdramatic and it made me laugh. I remember Tidalik and Medio Pollito. Medio Pollito was better because it was about a mean little chick. Harry – I liked when Tiddalik drank all the water because it was very funny. Terri made it funny because she did like

a funny story and danced. I listened to Mrs Idris’ story at break time about something rich man and poor man. I cant remember the name but it was a good story. The poor man got rich because there was all the gold and rubies in the cave. The rich guys tried to get revenge but it didn’t work. Baron – we got on the carpet. We had to pretend to fly to Australia and Spain. We saw lots of pictures. The lady was doing sign language. Jake – we went on a flying carpet. It was a little bit comfortable but it was hurting my butt a little bit! The stories were a little bit funny. I liked them both. Lucas – I liked the Spain. I dress up. Fun. Mummy came for a story too. Kaschan – I liked being in dress up with face paints because my mummy is a good artist and I looked cool. It was fun to go on the carpet and we joined in good. Ashantey – I came dressed as a goth. I wore black leggings and a different coloured shirt. I liked listening to lots of stories but I didn’t like when everyone shouted to join in. Sanah – It was good on World Book Day because I liked it when the lady came to read a story because she was really funny. I liked the Tidalik one because when the lady was telling it I actually fell over laughing. She was like pretending to have her mouth full and then turning around to ignore us!

Maple Class

Max: We saw Mario Perito, that was the chickens. We made a den in class to look at our books in. Kaiden: The lady had a magic carpet, we had to put our seatbelts on. We saw a chicken, frog and goat on the adventure. Tristan: I liked the story of the frog when we were on the magic carpet. Toby: I have heard lots of stories. I looked at books outside. South Africa. Mr Eden read us ‘The Lady of Shallott.’ Skye: I listen to Mr Eden’s story as well; it was really good because it was mysterious. James: The story teller who came was quite unique. She did many different stories from lots of different places around the world. One was from Bolivia in South America. Darren-Lee: The storyteller put a lot of energy into the stories. She was acting it out and using different voices. Ben: Mrs Porter read us a story in Food Tech. It was about an enormous turnip. I thought it was a bit daft! Lex: I went to hear Mr Eden’s story one lunchtime. I liked the fact that it was a poem too. April: I really enjoyed having stories told to me. It was good to hear different people reading to us. My favourite story was the chicken one from Spain. Jeffrey: I sat on the magic carpet. We had to use our imagination because we didn’t fly. We had to put our finger in our ear and turned it up (our imagination). There was a story about a dragon and he went ROAR!

Keith: I dressed up as French person and I had a moustache. Everyone was dressing up as French and Mexico and UK and Spain and Japanese. The storyteller told us stories from Spain and French. It was a fun time. Kieran: I guessed the Spain flag. Amy: I dressed as a Rubik’s Cube from London.
