Over the last two weeks I have been privileged to be able to show over 300 families around the school as part of the primary transition process. It has been a delight to showcase the school buildings and the students and staff within them as well as to hear so much positive feedback about the learning that people have seen, the students they have met and their feelings about the school. At Bow we love to celebrate success and within the pages of this Newsletter you will see that we have plenty to celebrate. Coming up in November will be our first whole day to celebrate success with our parents. Throughout the day, on November 13 th , we are inviting parents to come in to school with their child to review their work, meet their form tutor and discuss the ways in which home and school can continue to work in partnership to ensure great ongoing success in school. These occasions are very important points in the school year for the sharing of information as well as an opportunity for a good discussion about the home-school partnership that is so fundamental to student achievement. Last Friday we held a Whole School Assembly to celebrate success. All 1,000 students and 180 staff gathered together in the Sports Hall and welcomed our Chair of Governors, Dave Lake, as well as the Speaker for Tower Hamlets, Councillor Sabina Akhtar, to share the occasion with us. Our new Prefect Team were introduced to the school and given their badges of office. We also announced our new Senior Prefect, Peter McCartney, and look forward to his leadership of the student body over the next year. The assembly culminated with the House Awards and congratulations must go to Besant House for winning the overall House Cup. Yesterday, our 300 girls gathered together to think about the International Day of the Girl and to hear stories of girls around the world. Year 10 girls led the assembly with our Women’s Education Officer, Ms Rahman, and spoke about the problems that girls around the world face in terms of their access to education as well as hearing about the challenges for some girls and women in this country too. They were inspired to aim high and to find ways to overcome any barriers that might prevent them from reaching for the stars. They did very well considering some of them had never picked up a stick before, and even got spotted as a ‘team to watch’. The boys won 2, drew 1 and lost 2 - but retained their spirit and pushed for success throughout every match. It was great to watch. Special mention must go to our top goal scorer – Azad. Watch this space!

On Friday 6th October 2017 35 students from Years 7-10 represented the school in the Tower Hamlets Cross Country competition. Equality noun -“The state of being equal, especially in status, rights or opportunities”

October marks Black History Month, which is our first theme of the month this academic year at Bow. To celebrate staff and students have been getting involved in various exciting activities across subjects during school. We have a whole school competition called “Black History Heroes” where students have been encouraged to create a piece of work about someone they consider a hero. The winners of the competition will be announced at the end of the month and receive 50 house points as well as an amazing opportunity to get their work published in The Black History Heroes E-Anthology. Already there are some amazing entries, guaranteeing that picking a winner will be difficult! We have also had a mini Black History Month Exhibition, with some amazing student work being displayed in the school. Have a look for yourself at some of the work being exhibited:

We also look forward to our Black History Lunch and The Bow School Film Night programme, where our first film to be previewed will be “Hidden Figures” on Thursday 19th October. Tickets available from Ms Rahman in M.0.61 - all students are welcome.
