Welcome

Lucas Raymond Valentine, son of Raymond and Celena Valentine. Lucas is the newest member

of our parish family through the Sacrament of Baptism on March 3, 2019. May God bless him.

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANTHONY…………………………………………

Have you hit your Lenten stride yet? It is still early, but we go to the desert today with the Lord to be strength-

ened against fear and temptation. What is your temptation? Food and other comforts; power and glory; self-sufficiency

without reference to God? Lent is the time to realize that we need to love our souls more than we love our bodies. How

can we do this? We can begin by resolving to cease bad habits. We have them, even if we do not like to admit it. Some

of these bad habits can be sinful, also. Do I talk about others in a detrimental way? Do I overeat or abuse alcohol? How

is my speech? Do I spend a lot of time on the internet, wasting the precious gift of time? What about penance? I know

that many think “giving up” something for Lent is old fashioned, but sometimes, if undertaken in the proper spirit, it will

be helpful to us as we learn to say “NO” to little things. Ultimately, this self-denial should help us to say “NO” to the

bigger temptations in life. What about “adding something,” also? We speak of giving up or taking away, but we can

also perform extra acts of charity, pray a little more (do you know where your Rosary is?), visit the sick and shut-ins,

give someone a call, do some spiritual reading, and spend some time with the Scriptures. The 40 Days of Lent are meant

to be different from the other days of the year! Make profitable use of the time. Don’t forget – this Friday is a day of

abstinence – we refrain from eating meat on the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday.

Lent not only brings about changes in our lifestyle, it brings some changes to our worship.

Our Penitential Act will be the Confiteor and the Kyrie. As we prepare to renew our Baptismal

Promises on Easter Sunday, we will profess our faith with the Apostles’ Creed. During Lent,

we do not sing or say “Alleluia” at all; we also refrain from the “Gloria,” except on the Solemni-

ties of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary (March 19) and the Annunciation of the

Lord (March 25). We will also be singing some hymns and Mass parts a capella. We will

strive to follow the Church’s general norm for Lent: “During Lent, it is not permitted to decorate

the altar with flowers, and the use of musical instruments is allowed only so far as to support

the singing. Nevertheless, Laetare Sunday (the Fourth Sunday of Lent – March 31 this year),

Solemnities, and Feasts are exceptions to this rule.”

Have you met Suzanne Dunn? Suzanne is a catechumen – she is preparing to celebrate Baptism, Confirmation,

and First Eucharist at the Easter Vigil this year. Today we will celebrate The Rite of Sending at the 11:00AM Mass –

Suzanne will “be sent” to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election. Bishop Malesic will elect (choose) Suzanne and the

other catechumens throughout the Diocese to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation. On the Third, Fourth, and Fifth

Sundays of Lent we will celebrate the Scrutinies with Suzanne at the 11:00AM Mass. More details will follow soon.

I hope you have been giving some thought and reflection about the

Diocesan Lenten Appeal. You probably received a letter about the DLA this

week. I hope you will consider supporting the good works of the Diocese and

our parish. Once we make the diocesan goal of $48,304, we will be able to keep

the amount over the goal for the work of our parish. We will be using some of

the refund for the FORMED initiative. Have you looked at the kiosk in the

gathering space? You will find lots of good, solid spiritual material to help you in

your relationship with God. I hope you take advantage of having this information

“so close to home.” I am happy to report that we have received one gift already for

our 2019 DLA in the amount of $1,500. We will have a weekly update in the bulletin

throughout the seasons of Lent and Easter.

I look forward to beginning our Lenten Study Group this Tuesday, March 12, at 6:30PM. Please come to

the atrium where we will meet.

Have you given any thought to how you might like to participate here in our parish? We have need for

readers, ushers, servers, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Please let me know if you would like to

serve our parish in these capacities. I hope to meet with the various groups during the next several weeks. I ask that

all parishioners who serve as readers to come to a short meeting on Monday, March 18, at 6:30PM in the church.

If you are not presently proclaiming the Scriptures at Mass but would like to do so, you are welcome to attend

this meeting, also.

MOST HOLY TRINITY, ONE GOD, HAVE MERCY ON US!
