Tuapiro Point is identified by the regional council as a High Value Ecological Site. The key site Vfeatures are described below:

Key Site Features

This site comprises largely unvegetated sandspit andintertidal flats. No rare or uncommon plant species havebeen recorded here.

This sandspit is used as a neap high tide roost by waders suchas bar-tailed godwit and New Zealand pied oystercatcher(At Risk-Declining) (B. Chudleigh (OSNZ) pers. comm. 2006;Owen et al. 2006). White-faced herons have also been

recorded and shags roost in the trees.

Increasing public use of the adjoining recreation reserve isresulting in increased disturbance to this roost site (Owen etal. 2006).

This site is regionally significant because of the highabundancesand numbersof speciesof internationaland NewZealand migratory waders that regularly roost here on neaphigh tides (Owen et al. 2006). Surrounding sites 'Ongare' and'Tuapiro' line the estuary, and provide buffering and a widerrange of habitats.

In terms of the cultural values of the area, there are a range of policies within the Regional CoastalEnvironment Plan that apply to Tuapiro Point:

Proposals [for useof thisareal must recogniseand provide fortraditional maori uses, practicesand customary activities such as mahinga kai and mahinga mataitai.

The use of this area must] Avoid significant adverse effects on resources or areas of spiritual,historical or cultural significance to tangata whenua in the coastal environment.

Activities that disturb the foreshore and seabed shall be undertaken in a way that avoidssignificant adverse effects on the environment - particularly on:

(ii) Indigenous ecosystems and habitats that are particularly vulnerable to modification,including: estuaries, lagoons, coastal wetlands, dunelands, intertidal zones, rocky reefsystems, eelgrass and saltmarsh; and

(lii) Habitats of indigenous species that are important for recreational, commercial,cultural or traditional purposes, including traditional Maori gathering, collection orharvest of kaimoana.

Discharges to the Coastal Marine Area must:(a) Avoid significant adverse effects, including cumulative effects, on aquatic life, habitats,feeding grounds, kaimoana (including shellfish gathering), ecosystems.

Tdapiro Point is identified by the regional council as a High Value Ecological Site. The key sitefeatures are described below:

Key Site Features

This site comprises largely unvegetated sandspit andintertidal flats. No rare or uncommon plant species havebeen recorded here.

This sandspit is used as a neap high tide roost by waders suchas bar-tailed godwit and New Zealand pied oystercatcher(At Risk-Declining) (B. Chudleigh (OSNZ) pers. comm. 2006;Owen et al. 2006). White-faced herons have also been

recorded and shags roost in the trees.

Increasing public use of the adjoining recreation reserve isresulting in increased disturbance to this roost site (Owen etal. 2006).

This site is regionally significant because of the highabundancesand numbersof speciesof internationaland NewZealand migratory waders that regularly roost here on neaphigh tides (Owen et al. 2006). Surrounding sites 'Ongare' and'Tuapiro' line the estuary, and provide buffering and a widerrange of habitats.

In terms of the cultural values of the area, there are a range of policies within the Regional CoastalEnvironment Plan that apply to Tuapiro Point:

Here's a summary:

Proposals [for use of this area] must recognise and provide for traditional maori uses, practicesand customary activities such as mahinga kai and mahinga mataitai.

The use of this area must] Avoid significant adverse effects on resources or areas of spiritual,historical or cultural significance to tangata whenua in the coastal environment.

Activities that disturb the foreshore and seabed shall be undertaken in a way that avoidssignificant adverse effects on the environment - particularly on:

(ii) Indigenous ecosystems and habitats that are particularly vulnerable to modification,including: estuaries, lagoons, coastal wetlands, dunelands, intertidal zones, rocky reefsystems, eelgrass and saltmarsh; and(iii) Habitats of indigenous species that are important for recreational, commercial,cultural or traditional purposes, including traditional Maori gathering, collection orharvest of kaimoana.

Discharges to the Coastal Marine Area must:(a) Avoid significant adverse effects, including cumulative effects, on aquatic life, habitats,feeding grounds, kaimoana (including shellfish gathering), ecosystems.
