Information
Model
(BIM)
Capitol Theatre, Edmonton, AB
• The BIM is a union or federation of many subBIMS or
BIMbits
• Each participant would own, maintain and be
responsible for their part of the BIM
• Models (if federated) or Worksets (if unified) are read-
write by the authoring party
• BIM is read-only by receiving parties
• BIM can be successfully shared along traditional
contractual structures
• BIM can be distributed
Changes & Risk
AIA E202 2008 as a Protocol
A/E’s own, maintain and are
responsible for the design portions and
design corrections to the BIM.
Contractors/Fabricators own, maintain
& are responsible for the built portions
and required modeling to the BIM
Designers are responsible for BIM
fidelity from LOD 100 – 300
Producers are responsible for BIM
fidelity from LOD 400 – 500
Can be safely federated or unified
inside BIM or 3rd Party federation
software such as “Navisworks”™
Engagement
Think of BIM as: Bim NOT BIM1. Data Centric versus Document Centric Thinking
2. Model only what needs to be modeled to create
an INFORMED interchange vs exchange milieu
3. Consistent, coordinated and complete BIM by
repeated communication and consultation

If BIM does not deeply
alter your core DNA
and profoundly change
your psyche then you
will not understand BIM
at all.
