EDITORIAL Last Sunday's 4-1 win at Oriel Park will be a warm memory to

Bohemian tans tor many years to come. Eschewing defensive tactics and playing with a courage and commitment that had to be seen to be believed our team wrote an indelible tale which carried far too many punchlines tor Dundalk and, long before the end, their fans were treating the affair as a cl.osed chapter while, at the same time in their sporting fashion, paying tribute to a .vonderful win.

Not since the 1927/28 season had we scored four goals away against Dundalk in the league and that scoreline was exactly the same as last week 's. The whole side played with a brand of confidence which was worthy of the praises heaped on them and our particular strong men were go~lkeeper Dermot O'Neill , Barry Murphy, Jack McDonagh, Richie Williams, who did a tireless job in repulsing the Dundalk raids, and Jackie Jameson.

As against St. Patrick's Athletic the side showed that it has . immense attacking ability and shots are landing on target with

excellent regularity. When Dundalk put on fierce pressure in the second half our defence withstood the onslaught with tremendous coolness and superb understanding. Every man in that rearguard action worked a considerable amount of overtime.

Today we face a Cork United side which is a great deal stronger than the league table shows. They have been putting a useful side tog-ether and will prove difficult opponents and, as we know too well, there has seldom been a bad Cork side in the League of Ireland.

We welcome our visitors from Leeside who have inherited a fine tradition from their predecessors of the 1940's in anticipation of another good game with, hopefully, another three points in the bag at the end of the day!

We take this opportunity of extending our sincere sympathies to the families and friends of the late Ted McEvoy and Jim Boyle. Both men were known for their kindliness and gentlemanly stance in this world. Ted, who enjoyed the game of darts, and Jim, "The Man with the Rose", will long be remembered by all who knew them.

It's also timely to wish Management Member, Jimmy Montgomery, a speedy return to full fitness- he has been in hospital recently - and to add to that - it's good to see Noel Nolan, another of our Management, back in full harness after an eye operation.

Cork United entered the League of Ireland in 1976 as Cork Albert Rovers and th·en changed the title to Cork Alberts before finally switching to Cork United, a move which took place in 1979.

In an effort to find a successful blend they used 28 players last season in the championship with only Liam Keane being an ever-pr·esent. This term they appear to be a little more organised and that blend which they seek is not too far from fruition.

Charlie McCarthy, w tth 10, was their top league scorer ' last season and has found the net three times this season to take over .once more as their chief goal-grabber.

OUR RESERVES ARE GREAT! A team is only as good as its res·erve " back-up". That's one of

the truisms of football and we at Dalymount are fortunate in having a " B" side which most League of Ireland clubs would be only too happy to field as their first-team choice.

" Our reserves have the basic abilities such as controlling and passing of a high standard. What they are learning now is to put these vital skills into a team effort" .

That 's how Ralph O'Fiaherty, whose special brief concerns the welfare of the reserve side, described the young stars of tomorrow to me last week. He is full of confidence regard ing the players under his scrutiny and says that "at least two or three of the side could make the break-through to the first team before the end of the season".

Mick O'Brien, for the moment, is the man guarding the net and his valuable advice to his fellow defenders has meant a lot to the confidence of the emerging stars. Also in d€fence is such great prospects as Robin Lawlor, Kevin Brady, Paul Ennis and, of course, the very much experienced Austin Brady. Pat Nolan is yet another of the rearguard who steadies the younger heads around him.

Lawlor, Brady (Kevin) and Ennis are all in or around the 18 years of age mark. Liam O'Brien is a fine prospect in midfield and he is not yet 17 years old! On the right wing is Paul Newe, a 20 year old with immense possibilities and Colin Duffy, also a winger, and two years younger than Newe, shows touches that augur well for the future.

John Reynor (17), Michael Waters (18) , Paul Dea'ne (18) -he came from Dundalk- and Niall Murtagh (19), are other reserve stars. " The competition for places on the " B" team is fierce" says Ralph," and these lads are aiming to make it to the· senior side as qu ickly as possible".

Having seen a recent training session involving the reserves I can assure readers that Ralph is qu~t·e correct when he stresses the high degree of commitment among the players. Paul Newe and Colin Duffy have been hitting the net with splendid regularity this season and Niall Murtagh has also demonstrated a keen scoring touch.

The side won its fir t six league games in a dashing manner and knocked up scc\res of 5-0 against Longford Town and 6-3 against Belgrave, both at Dalymount. The future looks bright indeed for the Gypsies with such an abundance of talent.

THE BOHEMIAN YEARS

1 recently came across two old copies of the Freeman's Journal of December, 1905 and, with great good fortune, they were the Saturday and Monday of the 9th and 11th of the month which enabled me to study the soccer fixtures and happenings of that week-end of 76 years ago.

Bohemians were to the fore, as usual, and had to travel to Derry where they met Derry Celtic in an Irish League fixture. On the same day Shelbourne played Glentoran at Serpentine Avenue anyone know where the venue was situated ? - and Belfast Celtic were at home to Linfield.

The Bohemian side to play Derry was: Murphy, Trotter, Reddy, Taylor, Callanan , Burns, Jameson, Meehan, Cotton, Sloan and Gill. Yes, we hael a Jameson in those days, too !

A large crowd turned up at Celtic Park, Derry and the locals tried out three new players, Bonner, Hamilton and May, all of whom were signed from Scottish clubs. But it made no difference to Bohemians who went on to record a splend id 4-0 win to cause the big upset of that wee'k-end.

The match report stated that "Bohemians relie.d on their fasl rushes, the Derry defence was quite at sea and, before the interval Bohemians had gained the substantial lead of four goals, ·Cotton, Sloan 2 and Jameson being the scorers".

In the second half it appears that Derry performed a lot better but Bohemians seemed content to re·st on their four goal lead and, to quote the report, " the whole eleven played a defence against which the Derry forwards made very little headway" .

Who said defensive football was a product of our times?

Shelbourne drew 1-1 with Glentoran before 1,000 people and Linfield defeated Belfast Celtic by 3-1 . In the Leinster Senior League we played Tritonville and lost by 2-1. Our side was: Wallace, E. Keating , P. Doyle, J. Murray, J. S. Doyle, Goodwin, Wemyes, Stephen R. M. Hooper, Curtis and Towle.

Our " C" team fared dreadfully, being routed 7-0 by Old St. Mary's in the Leinster Junior League. Our team was: Christian, Brady, Currie, Cooper, Johnston, Green, V. O'Connell, Bassett, Hickey, McHugh and O'Brien.

Unfortunately there were no league tables published so I can 't say where we were pos'ilioned ·in the Irish League nor, indeed,

were tables for the Leinster Senior League published. However, the following tit~bits from other games may be of interest to our readers.

In the Irish Junior Cup (Fourth Round) , Shamrock Rovers beat Richmond Wanderers by 5-2 and Sligo, in the sa.me ~omp~ti.ti?n, easily over:came Enniskillen Celtic, 6-2. In the English F1rst DIVISIOn Aston Villa beat Sheffield Un ited 4-1, Liverpool .beat Wolves 4-0 and Manchester United had a 3-1 away win over Burnley in the Second Division.

Now, a poser for our older members. Two years ago Gary O'Reilly, an 18 year old defender with 'Spurs had created something of a record by playing with both England Schoolboys and the Republic of Ireland Youth side. His grandfather once played in goal for Bohemians but I can't trace th·e exact year. Perhaps someone may know of his career record. Our president, Phil Howlin, usually comes up trumps in these cases. Maybe he can supply the missing data.

Our present points total is extremely interesting from a particular point of view. We are at the head of the table with 25 points and that's only two short of the total which won the champion ship for us in 1934! In fact , there have been five occasions in the history of the championship when sides with less points than we have at the moment won the title and Cork United did it twice. They were champions in 1944/45 with 22 points and in 1945/46 with 21 points, 14 games being played in the championship.

Our present brilliant start is the best for the club for many years in the league but we've a long way to go yet to beat the start to the 1923/24 season when we won 15 games in a row from 1he start of the season. In that term the league was decided over 18 matches and our first defeat was against Shelbourne, 5-2, at Shel.bourne Park on Saturday, December 22, 1923. Not only is that winning streak a club record but it is also a league record. Others have started winning runs which went longer but not from the very first game.
