The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1324) Today we celebrate the solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the Holy Eucharist. This solemnity was instituted by Pope Urban IV in 1264. To that effect, the Pope asked St Thomas Aquinas, to write hymns for the feast and he wrote two popular hymns, the Tantum Ergo and O Salutaris. These songs are popularly used in praising and adoring Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Whenever we come to Mass in a state of grace, we receive the body and blood of Christ. God gives us his very self, his body and blood. Many people have given up on going to Mass, why? Because it is boring! But the reality is, some people don’t come to Mass because they don’t realise how great it is what we receive at Mass. People don’t realise that we receive God’s very self. God himself nourishes us to make us holy. What we do at Mass is what Jesus told his Apostles to do at the Last Supper. It is a command. This is my body; this is my blood…Do this in memory of me. Our Catechism teaches us that: CCC 1341 This command of Jesus to repeat his actions and words “until he comes” does not only ask us to remember Jesus and what he did. It is also directed at the liturgical celebration, by the apostles and their successors, of the memorial of Christ, of his life, of his death, of his resurrection, and of his intercession in the presence of his Father. What we do every Sunday is what has been done for the last 2000 years -coming together as a worshipping community, listening to the word, and breaking the bread. “I am the bread of life.” The Mass brings us together, unites us. The Eucharist is about union with Christ. “Whoever eats my bread and drinks blood abides in me and I in him” Jn 6:57. This is a foretaste of our heavenly union with Christ. We may be different, but because we participate in the one Eucharist, we are united as one body of Christ. This is what we heard in our second reading. St Paul said, “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of one bread.” And finally the Eucharist is the remedy for death. It is the medicine of immortality. In the Eucharist we receive the promise of the resurrection. Jesus tells us that “He who eats my body and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day.” Why would someone run away from the Eucharist? Why would someone leave the promise of eternal life? Why would someone shun Jesus, Jesus who is eternal life? May Jesus in the Eucharist who is the very centre and heart of our Church, become the centre and heart of our life

MASSES and PRAYER INTENTIONS

Pause and pray for your own intentions......... your dreams, your regrets, your thanks.

As if the Church were not satisfied with fifty days of paschal feasting, the festivals continue beyond the season. First the Holy Trinity is honoured, and now the Body and Blood of Christ. Many still know today’s feast by its shorter Latin name, Corpus Christi.

This observance originated in the Belgian city of Liège in the 13th century. Very soon after, in 1264, Pope Urban IV decreed that the feast be celebrated by the whole Western Church. From then until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council the popular focus of the feast was on the presence of Christ in the consecrated bread, the Blessed Sacrament.

Nowadays the feast invites us to enter into the whole mystery of Jesus’ self-gift to us in the Eucharistic meal. We are reminded that the Eucharist is first and foremost an action that engages us heart and soul. Our communion in the Body and Blood of Christ makes the Church the Body of Christ. Like Jesus we break the bread and pour out the wine of our lives for the sake of the world.
