Smartphone Hologram Holograms are no longer a science fiction fantasy or a technology from the future! Observe the properties of diffracting light to create an optical illusion that resembles a 3D hologram. TEKS: SCI 5.6C: The student is expected to demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels through one medium to another and demonstrate that light can be reflected such as the use of mirrors or other shiny surfaces and refracted such as the appearance of an object when observed through water. TECH 6.1A: The student is expected to identify, create, and use files in various formats such as text, raster and vector graphics, video, and audio files. TECH 6.6H: The student is expected to discuss how changes in technology throughout history have impacted various areas of study. Materials: Clear plastic o Such as: a CD case, rectangular plastic bottle, plexiglass, or transparency film Clear tape or super glue Graph paper or trapezoid template (provided below) Permanent marker Ruler Scissors or exacto knife Smart phone with access to YouTube How To: 1. Draw a trapezoid on the graph paper that follows the dimensions 1 cm (b 1 ) X 3.5 (h) cm X 6 (b 2 ) cm, or use the template trapezoid below. 2. Cut out your trapezoid template and place on top of your plastic material. 3. Use a permanent marker to trace the trapezoid, then use scissors or a knife to cut the shape out of the plastic. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make four plastic trapezoids.

5. Usetapeorsupergluetosecurethesidesofthetrapezoidstogether.Orientthetrapezoidswiththelongsidesontopandtheshortsidesonthebottom.Whenallfourtrapezoidsareconnected,itwillformastructurelikeapyramidwithoutapoint.Tryyourbesttokeepthesurfaceofeachtrapezoidclear!

6. LaunchYouTubeonyoursmartphoneandsearchfor“Hologramvideos,”orusethelinkswehaveprovidedhere:3DHologramVideoHologramElsaHologramT-RexHologramAnimals

7. Afteryouhavemadethevideofullscreen,placethestructure,smallopeningsidedown,inthecenterofyoursmartphoneovertheplayingvideo.Thevideoimagewilldisplayahologramimageinthecenter.

8. Ifyouwouldliketotrythesameprojectonatablet,thetrapezoiddimensionsshouldbeadjustedto2cm(b1)X7(h)cmX12(b2)cm.
