Using Simplified Representations in Mechanica
Simplified Representations can be used to simplify assemblies
without creating a new model.

Using Simplified Representations
Pro/ENGINEER assemblies can include an incredible level of detail that can in manycases present a problem for analyzing the model in Mechanica, or any othersimulation module for that matter. In many situations, users will want to suppresscertain components or simplify the assembly. However, actions such as suppressingcomponents mean that the original model has been modified. Therefore, the user
would have to copy the existing model to a new one, or keep track of whatcomponents need to be resumed at a later date. It is far more convenient for theengineer and the team working on the model to take advantage of simplifiedrepresentation. Components that are not going to be analyzed can be excluded fromthe representation and then the simplified representation itself can be used inMechanica.
A good example is shown in the figures above. The figure on the left shows the fullmodel; the figure on the right shows a simplified representation of the same modelwith components excluded. The original design model remains unchanged, while thesimplified representation has made significant reductions in the amount of geometry
that will be taken into Mechanica for analysis.
Best Practices
Simplified representations can be used to eliminate components for a number of
reasons. In other topics within this course, you may have seen where simplified
representations were used to remove components that represented payload and
replaced with a load or mass. Another different example would be bolts and nuts.
These components are often modeled in assemblies but can add a significant number

of elements to a model. Removing bolts and nuts from the assembly and replacing
them with Mechanica fastener simulation features could save significant analysis time
and memory.

Using Simplified Representations in Mechanica – Procedure Procedure: Using Simplified Representations inMechanica
Scenario
Take a simplified representation into Mechanica.
SimpReps pump.asm
Task 1. Access the Mechanica simplified representation.
Before completing any steps, note the components present in the PUMP.ASM
design assembly. In particular, note the presence of the bearings, and the
bolts and screws that are assembled through the holes in the VOLUTE.PRT
part as shown in the figure.
1. Click View Manager from the main toolbar.
Alternatively, you could access the View Manager be clicking View > View
Manager from the main menu.

2. If necessary, select the Simp Rep tab. Right-click Mechanica from the list ofSimplified Representation names and select Set Active as shown in the figure.
Note that the only components that remain are the VOLUTE.PRT,
BACKHEAD2.PRT, and FRAME2.PRT parts. The Mechanica simplified
representation has excluded the rest of the components as shown in the

figure.
3. Open Mechanica by clicking Applications > Mechanica from the main menu.
The bolts and screws in the model have been replaced with Mechanica
fasteners for analysis. This is not done automatically.
4. Return to the Standard Pro/ENGINEER mode by clicking Applications >
Standard.
5. Click Save from the main toolbar and click OK to save the model.
6. Click File > Close Window from the main menu.
7. Click File > Erase > Not Displayed > OK to erase the model from memory.

This completes the procedure.
