U11 Boys Football On Monday, our U11 team headed to Broadgreen to play against Monksdown, and with City Team representation on both sides, it was set up to be a cracker. The players on the pitch didn't disappoint. After starting well - and hitting the crossbar in the opening exchanges, Monksdown took the lead from a well delivered corner. Shortly afterwards, Monksdown scored an excellent second from long range. The pattern of the game didn't really change and we continued to move the ball well and probe for spaces to shoot. It wasn't long before we halved the deficit - and then, just like Monksdown - grabbed a quick, spectacular goal from long-range. We added a third to take the lead, before Monksdown equalised to make it 3-3. Some nice football just before half-time led to us taking the lead again. Half-time score: SPB 4 - 3 Monksdown The second half saw us take a stranglehold on the game, and our players certainly had their long-range shooting boots on. Another wonderful effort led to us scoring a fifth, before we then added another to make it six. Monksdown, just like we had done in the first half, rallied well and scored a deserved fourth goal in the dying minutes of the game. Final score: SPB 6 - 4 Monksdown . Water Polo Tournament

On Tuesday, a selection of Year 5 and 6 boys and girls represented St. Paschal Baylon in the preliminary heats of the water polo competition. We came top of our group winning 4 of 4 games with some exceptional goals and only conceding one goal. We then played a semi-final winning 3-0 and battled hard in the final narrowly missing out to Lister. This meant we went on to the Liverpool finals which took place on Thursday. On Thursday we were up against some tough competition. Unfortunately, the two finalists were also in our group. We were really pleased with the effort from our team. Well done!

LCQM Maths Puzzle of the Week

Solution to last week’s puzzle

What is the number at the top of the tree? Each number is

the total of the two numbers below it!

The answer was 36.

Well done to Laura Ormandy who correctly solved this

festive puzzle.

We will be continuing our parents’ maths puzzles in the forthcoming half-termly newsletters.

Well done to all those parents who have got involved.

Remember, doing fun maths activities with your child can be very powerful in increasing

confidence and developing interest for the subject.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN SCHOOL THIS WEEK? EYFS: We started off our week by watching Year Two perform their Nativity Assembly. We loved the costumes, the singing and the dancing! It was very helpful watching the Nativity story as we talked about it and sequenced it in RE. In maths, we were introduced to a new monster called Jerry and we have explored number seven. In our busy time areas, we have completed lots of Christmas themed activities such as 'elf yourself', labelling Santa and making candy canes. We performed our Advent Collective Worship for the infants and then the juniors on Thursday. We can't wait for you to see it next week. Our elf Bud has been up to more mischief this week and when we came into school on Friday, he had put all of the teachers on to the sad planet! Remember that next Wednesday is party day so children are to come to school in their party clothes. Next Thursday, children will be making a Christingle (details have been sent home today) and on Friday they can bring a small toy to school. Have a

lovely weekend filled with festive fun! YEAR ONE: This week, in our English lessons, we have been looking at poems related to fire. We read a poem all about 'The Great Fire of London' by Paul Perro and then in groups we recited a verse. As a year group, we performed the whole poem and even added in some actions. Impressive how quickly everybody remembered their verse! In Maths, we have continued exploring different ways of adding up to 20 and have begun to explore subtraction. We even learnt a new word 'partition' and have been practising partitioning numbers into tens and ones. In RE, we have been reflecting on the importance of Christmas and discussed reasons why people send Christmas cards. We designed and wrote a Christmas card to somebody in school to thank them for something special that they have done for us. Our topic lessons this week have been very messy! We used a range of cereal boxes to create our own London street from 1666. We had to paint the boxes, draw on windows and doors, make roofs and then cut and stick flames to re-create a fire scene. Check out Twitter to see the finished product! We are looking forward to all the lovely things that will be happening next week in our final week of Autumn term!

YEAR TWO: What a wonderful week we have had in Year Two! We are so incredibly proud of the children for their Nativity performance. They delivered their lines so clearly, showed great expression on their faces and the camel song was simply outstanding! In Science, we wrote a letter to a dentist with the findings of our cereal investigation. Then, we were lucky enough to have a healthy eating presentation from our very own Chef Terry. He brought us a selection of food types and helped us to develop our understanding of a balanced meal. We were very surprised by some of the facts he told us! We now know that he doesn’t add any salt to our meals. On Friday, we had great fun making melting snowmen biscuits! We used this as our stimulus for writing and wrote a set of instructions to help other children make them too! In the afternoon, we enjoyed a special treat for our Nativity performance; a movie afternoon with hot chocolate! YEAR THREE:

We started our week in a very pleasant way - watching the Year 2 Nativity play, which was excellent! We also had the pleasure of watching a Christmas Collective Worship on Thursday - this time it was the Reception classes. Not only that, we enjoyed a fabulous Christmas dinner on Wednesday! It is safe to say that we are starting to feel very festive! In between all that, however, it was business as usual: we started a new unit of work in maths (length); we started to innovate fables in English; created sculptures made from fruit, in order to replicate Claes Oldenburg, in our art lesson and learned more about Advent in RE. Phew! YEAR FOUR It's been an exciting week at Saint Paschal Baylon as we prepare for the arrival of Jesus. Year 4 were treated to two fantastic advent collective worships from Year 2 and Reception, which reminded everyone of the important messages of Advent, and why it is such an important time to us. Despite the build-up of excitement for the Christmas holidays, lessons have continued as usual. In maths, the children have been busy practising methods to answer large division sums, extending to dividing three-digit numbers. Our final English focus this year is narrative poetry. After immersing in Macavity the Cat, the children used computers, dictionaries and thesauruses in order to explore the language used in the poem.

YEAR FIVE: Year 5 have had a fantastic week! The children have worked extremely hard getting their heads around a variety of multi-step word problems in maths - and we have been proud of the resilience they have shown. In English, the children have continued to deepen their understanding of the story of Oliver Twist, by adapting a section of narrative into a play-script. RE has focused on the importance of waiting patiently in hope, for the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The children recognise that Jesus is hope for all and the light of the world - and discussed both ways they can wait in hope, and studied Scripture linked to this. In Topic this week, the children looked at different Christmas meals around the world, and converted a recipe for different amounts of people to share. If all goes to plan, the children will bring home their very own slice of Yule Log next Thursday. A very productive week was had by all. YEAR SIX: This week we have finished our maths topic on decimals. We are now fully confident with the various methods that we can use to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. We have moved on to 'negative numbers' and have looked at the real life situations in which minus numbers are used (including for overdrafts!). In literacy, we have completed our poetry unit and have written our own version of the well-known song 'What a Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong. We created some fantastic versions such as 'what a magical world, what an upside down world and what a beautiful world'. In RE, we have been thinking about the expectations and preparations that take place during Advent. We created a set of guidelines

to help Christians to spiritually prepare for the coming of Jesus.

Youth.com is for boys and girls Y3 and above. The group meets every Monday during term time from 6.15pm to 7.15pm in the John Vianney room at Christ the King Church. We

offer lots of activities in a caring and fun environment.
