“The brief.- To shoot 7 weeks in the UK for southern China. The key to our approach was exhaustive research. Being able to go to Guangzhou with the location Manager and point at the details, of what makes a place unique was essential. Photos can never convey being in the place, this journey allowed us to revisit our collective experience when looking for possibilities in the UK. The other main 'mind set' we all had to slip into, was that of a period drama, 'react to what you see, not what you think you see'. With this, it allowed us to look at, for example, the outside of Wembley stadium and say "yes this could be Beijing railway station" or an underground store room in a basement garage, "I could imagine this as one of those buildings under the elevated roadways, near little Africa in Guangzhou." The detail of the design within Chinese buildings is very different to western build practices. Building and dressing sets with those details really helped when we were outside in the real world of the UK. The other element which cannot be under estimated was the lighting. I think this was the final part of the jigsaw to pull all our collective ideas and looks together. From the sets, to the costumes, the Sound scape to make-ups tireless application of fake sweat.
