The 1901 Iowa State Sportsmen’s Association Tournament was held in Newton on May 15, 16, & 17. At the annual meeting there,Ottumwa was elected to hold the 1902 Tournament. The Ottumwa members started a plan to have a special trophy made for a special competition each year. The trophy was the magnificent Diamond Badge. Its worth at that time was $125.00.The Badge was made so that bars can be attached to it, which will bear the name of the winner & date each time it is won. The club which holds the state shoot will have this bar attached free of expense to the winner. “Each year, this badge will become more & more valuable, as it contains more bars & names. It will be a table of records.”“The winner each year will, if required, give bond to the association for its safe return the following year. The winner this year will receive the entrance next year, less 10 percent, which goes to the association.”“The entrance money this year will be divided 50-30 & 20 percent, class shooting. The high men this year will shoot off for the badge & the winner, in view of his receiving the entrance next year, will not participate in the money this year.”The program for the 1902 state shoot consisted of 12 target events shot on each of the first two days. On the third day there were three live bird events, the first of which was at seven live birds. Second came the state trophy event, and the tournament was completed with the Ottumwa Diamond badge contest.

The History of the Ottumwa Diamond Badge

The entrance is fixed at $6.50. This event had forty-one entries, and was the best shoot of the tournament. The daily papers here showed much enterprise by giving the shoot a splendid write up each day, consequently there was a very large crowd present to witness the skill displayed by the various marksmen who faced the traps and endured the storm. After lunch there were but seven equal to the task of grassing all of them. Then began the grind for supremacy, and the standing room was at a premium. Each killed the first round in true championship form, but on the second round Dr. Douthett found out that two barrels did not stop his bird. He looked a stayer, as he killed all his birds by using one barrel only. Grant went to the barn on the same round; Foley lasted four rounds and Booth six, and the contest was then on in earnest, there being left in, the rivals, Budd and Klein, together with a man by name of Dove, and he was shooting some. On the twelfth round Budd had two no birds and then one that left him without this particular diamond badge. Klein stopped and Dove missed an very aggravating side stepper. Klein was warmly congratulated, and well he should be after winning all in sight.

In 1903, live birds were shot again, open to all. In 1904, the badge was contested at 50 handicap targets, due to outside pressures to end live bird shooting. In 1909, a motion was made to limit the diamond badge to residents only. The Ottumwa Diamond badge is still shot for during the Handicap championship at the Iowa State Trap Shoot. When the last shooter is finished, 2 traps are drawn & those 2 scores are used, all ties shoot off. A 2 dollar fee is required for entry. The winner will get next year’s entrance money, just as they did in 1902, and their name on one of the most beautiful live bird medals ever shot for.
