“Netball teaches me how to playto a strategy and communicate in a team.

And in the evenings, cake decorating classes teach me to be patient and to concentrate on detail and patterns. I actually use similar skills in my apprenticeship, analysing fi nancial data, identifying patterns and investigating things that don’t add up. We follow a particular strategy, always liaising closely with other teams to achieve a common goal.

I do a lot of fi nancial investigating in my job, it’s something I really enjoy and am actually quite good at. Because of the nature of my investigations, no two breaks (our word for fi nancial anomalies, or things that don’t add up) are ever the same, so I’d defi nitely say that every day is different. You could call me a fi nance detective, even though I still have many things left to discover about being an Analyst, and about being myself.”

“Ice skating’s about balance, agility and fl exibility — like my work.

Agile working, work-life balance, fl exible hours — I get these as an apprentice. Two days a week I’m Miss Agile, working from home with my mobile phone, laptop and wifi , analysing and processing data, and in the offi ce I do 6am to 3pm to avoid the rush hour. This leaves my evenings free for fashion blogging and skating, so I’m productive in and out of the offi ce.

One of my proudest moments so far is hosting an apprentice networking event for school and college students, to which I invited senior leaders from my network to come and promote our apprenticeships. I also got up on the podium and shared my experiences, letting the audience know that university isn’t the only route to success. We’re all different — we just have to be agile and fl exible in how we develop ourselves.”

“In my spare time I plot my fl ight paths, at work I plan my future.

I’m a keen pilot. Nothing beats the feeling of fl ying, especially when you’re at the controls. And that’s what I like about this apprenticeship — I’m in control of my career, working with my mentor to go places.

I’m on a journey discovering all kinds of job possibilities. It’s only by being in a place, working, learning, earning, that you fi nd out what’s available.

My advice is to get an apprenticeship in something that interests you and start exploring from the inside. I knew a bit about technology before I joined, and now I’m writing code for our mainframe computers, analysing how they’re performing, and working out their capacity for supporting the business.

I’m learning from experienced people, and even presenting to large groups of IT specialists, which for me is more nerve-racking than fl ying a plane — but I’m doing it and my confi dence is going up and up.”

“The most important thing about managing a branch? Be yourself.I wasn’t even two years into my apprenticeship and already I’d moved to another part of the country and been given my own high street branch to manage. I have my Nan to thank — she supported me when I left university early to start in customer services at my local branch.

Now I’m a branch manager, studying for a fi nance degree that’s getting me interested in the relationship between politics and the fi nancial markets. It may even infl uence my next career move.

I go to the gym and it makes me stronger. But this apprenticeship, management position and degree are showing me strengths that the gym can’t. I’m becoming a leader and discovering new depths to my character.

Part of you thinks that when you’re made branch manager you should change and become someone else. But no — you should keep being who you are, building relationships, managing people your way and being true to yourself, which is why they hired you. That’s when you change naturally, without forcing it.”

FOCUS ON: LEADERS USING VRIn 2016, we became the fi rst organisation to use Virtual Reality, or VR, in our recruitment process to assess the strengths of potential future leaders. Applicants to selected apprenticeship programmes are put to the test by completing a range of tasks in different virtual worlds. This innovative technology enables us to present situations that wouldn’t be possible in conventional assessment processes. Candidates have complete freedom of movement within a 360-degree virtual world and can move virtual objects using tracked motion controls. And since we’re looking for digitally-minded people, it’s been great to see who’s excited about using it too. For some people, it’s reason enough to apply!

Solutions Pros love fi nding better ways to do things. They develop ideas, infl uence people and help us to create new solutions and improve our processes — enhancing the lives of our colleagues and customers alike.

Creative, strategic and practical, they can see the fi ner details, as well as the bigger picture, and don’t mind shaking things up if it means improving the way people work.

“I had fi ve university offers, but being an alternative thinker I chose an apprenticeship instead.

I wanted to help change perceptions about apprenticeships, so I went to 10 Downing Street and gave a presentation to support the UK Government’s Apprenticeships initiative. I also gave an interview to the Daily Mail about my own apprenticeship journey.

I am the ‘Divisional PMO Lead for the Transformation Portfolio of Change’ — a posh way of saying I manage a project team. I fi nd solutions, often quite alternative ones, and report them ‘up the line’ to senior colleagues who we call ‘stakeholders’.

“ Projects are about people — listening, organising, motivating, making sure we hit our deadlines.

I’ve coached athletics and taught swimming, so I know that timings are important, and this is so true when you’re learning to lead projects in a big organisation. How do you juggle the balls without dropping them? How do you keep a project on track?

It’s like playing Centre in a netball team, where the ball keeps coming to you, and you have to decide where to distribute it — that’s project management.

Also, how do you ask very busy senior people to deliver project information by a certain time? I can get a bit nervous about this because I’m still quite new, but my mentor is brilliant at supporting me. And people actually respond very positively — you just have to fi nd the right way to communicate.

There are so many projects to get involved in. But right now I’m sticking to one and trying not to run before I can walk. I don’t want to drop anything!”

“I had A Levels and a place at uni, but I chose to kick-start my career and go straight into marketing.

I’m a sociable person, always happy to chat to people, although I also like to get things done. I was the under-18 rep on the committee for my local netball team and I get very passionate when I’m performing in a team, always wanting to do my best to help with morale and team bonding.

These personal qualities have come into play in my apprenticeship, making projects happen, and simplifying information about our fi nancial products so that customers understand them, fi nd them interesting, and ultimately choose them.

Obviously, I have regular face-to-face meetings, but I’m also discovering the importance of non-verbal communications, like writing good clear emails. If you like working with people, you’ll love this apprenticeship. I defi nitely got it right, starting my career now rather than later.”

Application and online assessments

The fi rst step is to complete our online application form. After you have completed that, and if you’re applying for a higher apprenticeship (level 4 and above, and some selected level 3 apprenticeships), we may ask you to complete online tests to assess your strengths, behaviours and numerical reasoning skills.

Interview

At this stage there will be a face-to-face, telephone or video interview. We’ll advise you in advance as to which type of interview we’ll like you to complete. This is the fi nal stage for all level 2 apprenticeships and, if you are successful, we’ll make you an offer.

Assessment Centre

For level 4 and above apprenticeships, if you pass the interview, we will invite you to an assessment centre to take part in individual and group exercises as well as participate in a virtual reality exercise within an immersive digital environment.Don’t be alarmed, it will give us more of an idea of how you handle situations in person. Afterwards, we’ll give you a personal feedback report, and if you are successful we’ll make youan offer to join the programme.
