We’re kicking off the new year with several educational opportunities for parents to which I’d like to call your attention. New Executive Orders on Immigration and new State Legislation on Drivers’ Licenses -- Monday, January 12 at 8:30 am in the Edison Cafeteria. Attorney Gloria Curiel will explain these new opportunities and how they may affect members and friends of the Edison community. The meeting is sponsored by the Edison ELAC and will be conducted in Spanish with English translation provided as needed. This replaces the ELAC meeting previously scheduled for Wednesday morning, January 14. School Smarts Parent Academy: We’re currently recruiting for the Edison School Smarts Academy, a seven-week intensive program that will help parents learn more about how to be effective advocates for quality education for all children. The Academy will begin in early February, meeting at the time most convenient for the parents who register. Fifteen parents have already registered and spaces are limited, so please contact Yoly ASAP if you’re interested or respond to the flyer enclosed again with this Wednesday packet. Kids in Dynamic Shape Program – This seven-week, free program begins January 15 at Virginia Avenue Park. This Kaiser Permanente program offered by the Venice Family Clinic is designed for parents and children (ages 5-12) and offers interactive group learning about nutrition and exercise, on-site physical activities, gifts, prizes and more. Registration is limited. Call Cristina Perez at (310) 664-7529 to reserve a space. Sexual Development and Behavior in Children Wednesday, January 28 th , 2015 from 8:30am-10am in Room 208 Shuli Lotan, LCSW, from Family Services of Santa Monica will be talking about sexual development and behavior in school-age children; where what is normal, what is concerning, and how to talk about it. As school-age children begin to grow, they also begin to have curiosities about bodily changes and sexual matters. For many parents, talking about this may feel awkward or uncomfortable. Being able to provide children with accurate age-appropriate information is key to ensure children grow up safe, healthy and secure. If you are interested in learning more, please join us. Interpretation will be provided. January Activities on Campus – January is a busy month as we close out the first semester! Our teachers are collecting and scoring writing samples and administering reading and math assessments to measure student growth during the first semester and plan next units based on student needs. We’re focusing on character development in our assemblies on January 7 th and holding our annual Kindness and Justice Challenge in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during this month – challenging ourselves to thoughtfully carry out acts of kindness and justice at school, at home, and in our afterschool activities. There will be some planned substitutes on campus during this month as teachers administer 1:1 reading assessments (primary), work together to analyze assessment data, and participate in some district professional development work (differentiating for advanced learners, working as a professional learning community, and using new Chromebook computers we’re receiving in all our upper grade classrooms). Don’t forget to mark the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on January 19 on your calendars as the school and child care programs will be closed. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo y bienvenidos de nuevo a la

escuela!

Comenzamos el año nuevo con varias oportunidades educacionales para padres a las cuales quiero traer a su atención. Nuevas Órdenes Ejecutivas sobre Inmigración y Nueva Legislación en Licencias de Manejo – El lunes, 12 de enero a las 8:30 am en la Cafetería de Edison. La Abogada Gloria Curiel explicará estas oportunidades nuevas y cómo pueden afectar a miembros y amistades de la comunidad de Edison. La reunión es patrocinada por el ELAC de Edison y será conducida en español con traducción al inglés si es necesario. Esto remplaza la reunión de ELAC anteriormente programada para el miércoles por la mañana, el 14 de enero. La Academia de Inteligencias Escolares: Estamos reclutando para

la Academia de Inteligencias Escolares de Edison, un programa intensivo de

siete semanas que ayudará a los padres aprender más sobre cómo ser

abogados efectivos para la calidad de educación para todos los niños. La

Academia comenzará a principios de febrero, reuniéndose en el tiempo más

conveniente para los padres quienes se registren. Quince padres ya se han

registrado y los espacios son limitados, así es que por favor comuníquense

con Yoly lo antes posible si están interesados o respondan al volante

incluido en este paquete del miércoles.

Programa de Niños en Forma Dinámica – este programa gratis

de siete semanas comienza el 15 de enero en el Parque Virginia. Este

programa de Kaiser Permanente ofrecido por la Clínica Familiar de Venice

es diseñado para padres y niños (de edades 5 – 12 años) y ofrece

aprendizaje interactivo de grupos sobre nutrición y ejercicio, actividades

físicas en el sitio, regalos, premios y más. La registración es limitada.

Desarrollo Sexual y Comportamiento en Niños

El miércoles, 28 de enero, 2015 de 8:30 am – 10 am en el salón 208. Shuli Lotan, LCSW, de Servicios Familiares de Santa Mónica estará hablando sobre el desarrollo sexual y comportamiento en los niños de edad escolar; dónde qué es normal, qué debe preocuparle, y cómo hablar sobre ello.

Mientras los niños de edades escolares crecen, también empiezan a tener

curiosidades sobre cambios del cuerpo y temas sexuales. Para muchos

padres, hablar sobre esto puede ser incómodo. Poder proveerles a los niños

con información apropiada para su edad es la clave para asegurar que los

niños crezcan seguros, saludables y confiados. Si ustedes están interesados

en aprender más, por favor acompáñenos. Se proveerá interpretación.

Actividades de Enero en la Escuela– ¡Enero es un mes ocupado mientras cerramos el primer semestre! Nuestros maestros están colectando y calificando muestras de escritura y administrando exámenes de lectura y matemáticas para medir el crecimiento estudiantil durante el primer semestre y planear las siguientes unidades basadas en las necesidades de los estudiantes. Nos estamos enfocando en el desarrollo de carácter en nuestras asambleas el 7 de enero y teniendo nuestro Reto de Bondad y Justicia anual en honor del Dr. Martín Luther King, Hijo durante este mes – retándonos nosotros mismos a cumplir catos de bondad y justicia en la escuela, en el hogar, y en nuestras actividades después de clases. Tendremos unos suplentes planeados en la escuela durante este mes para que los maestros administren asesoramientos de lectura de 1:1 (primarios), trabajar juntos para analizar los datos de los asesoramientos, y participen en algunos trabajos de desarrollo profesional del distrito (diferenciar para aprendedores avanzados, trabajar como comunidad de aprendizaje profesional, y usando computadoras nuevas chromebook que estamos recibiendo en todos nuestros salones de los grados mayores). No se les olvide marcar el día feriado de Martín Luther King, Hijo el 19 de enero en sus calendarios porque la escuela y los programas de cuidado de niños estarán cerrados

Informes de las Instalaciones –Varios

trabajos muy importantes fueron logrados en la escuela vieja y en la nueva durante las vacaciones de invierno, incluyendo: 1. Disminución y removieron la biblioteca de la

escuela vieja y removieron todas las fundaciones.

2. La instalación de controles simples para las ventanas en cada salón para eliminar que se abran y cierren automáticamente las ventanas; y

3. Controles de volumen se instalaron en bocinas de anuncios públicos

School Smarts Parent Academy, an award-winning parent engagement program is coming back to Edison in 2015! School Smarts is designed to help parents better understand the big picture of how the education system works AND then help you maximize the success of your child and your school. This intensive academy provides seven-weeks of training with a small group of fellow Edison parents, here on the Edison campus. Workshops are 60-90 minutes long, bilingual, interactive and include fun activities, and light refreshments. Our School Smarts Steering Committee is planning a fun Parent-Child Art Night on January 14, so mark your calendars and come learn more about this exciting program. ¡Academia de Padres de Inteligencias Escolares, un programa de involucramiento de padres que recibido reconocimientos regresa a Edison en el 2015! Inteligencias Escolares está diseñado para ayudar a los padres a comprender mejor la gran imagen de cómo funciona un sistema de educación Y después ayuda a maximizar el éxito de su hijo/a y su escuela. Inteligencias Escolares es un programa para la participación de
