The Cougars were led by a strong defense as senior defender Danika Serassio scored her first career goal in the 64th minute against Utah Valley on Monday night, giving BYU a 1-0 victory. Goalkeeper Sabrina Davis tallied four saves to lead the defense to its fourth-consecutive shutout and fifth of the season. UNDEFEATED HISTORY. It has been 14 years since the Cougars have started a season 6-0. In 2005, BYU went on to have a 15-2-4 overall record, but lost a heartbreaker against Weber State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. THE STRENGTH OF THE DEFENSE. In six games played, the Cougars have only allowed one goal, a penalty kick against Mississippi State. Davis leads the defense in goal with a .929 save percentage, ranking her third in the nation. DEFENSE LEADS NO. 10 BYU TO 1-0 WIN OVER UVU

OREM, Utah – A second half goal by senior defender Danika Serassio combined with strong defensive play gave the No. 10 BYU women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over UVU Monday night at Clyde Field.

“It’s a huge win for us and these games are always challenging,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “We fought through it. We had to battle and needed someone to step up and Danika did that for us and we put it away.”

The Cougars came out strong in the second half, putting consistent pressure on the UVU defense but a goal didn’t come until the 64th minute when Serassio scored from distance after receiving the ball from freshman Jamie Shepherd to put BYU on top 1-0.

AredcardwasgiventoShepherdinthe68thminuteastheCougarsfinishedthegamedownaplayer.

DespitethepushfromtheWolverines’offenseinthefinalminutesofthematch,theBYUdefenseprevailedtotallyitsfourth-straightshutoutandfifthof the season.

Both teams managed to put shots on frame as the goalkeepers ended the game with a total of four saves apiece. The Cougars recorded 16 shots and fivecornerkickswhileUVUtalliedsixandone,respectively.

THE JAYHAWKS. Kansas is looking to improve its win-streak to four games as the Jayhawks have most recently beaten Purdue, Northwestern and Western Michigan. The only loss of the season came at DePaul, with Kansas falling short 1-0. The Jayhawk defense has only allowed three goals this seasonwhiletheoffenseisledbyKatieMcClure’ssevengoalsandthreeassists.

COUGARS VS. JAYHAWKS. The Cougars lead the series 3-1 with their most recent win coming in 2017 as BYU took a 3-2 victory at South Field.

Followingthe2016season,thefieldwasdugoutandleveled.Drainageworkwas done and concrete was added to the press area. The grass was also replaced.

BYU has played at South Field since the program existed. The record was set on September 1, 2017 when 5,735 fans gathered to watch the Cougars take on No. 1 UCLA.

2018 Season Review

• EliseFlakeledtheBYUoffensewith14goalsandfiveassistsfor33points. Bella Folino and Makaylie Moore followed with six goals apiece whileMikaylaColohanandMadieGateseachtalliedfivegoals.Colohanled the team with seven assists to bring her total points to 17.

• The Cougars said goodbye to one senior, Madie Gates, and lost fresh-man Olivia Wade to a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-ter-day Saints.

• BYU returned to the NCAA Tournament after a one year hiatus, falling short to TCU in the First Round.
