Dear Parents,

As I am sure many of you are aware this past week was extremely busy for our entire St Philip’s community. Firstly, we had our Round Square Week, which was organised and led incredibly well by our Round Square Committee. The week included the Upper Todd Landcare, the Dance-a-thon, leadership training, international food stalls, carnival rides and much more. I am extremely proud of our leaders and I thank Ms Sarah Pollitt, Mrs Sandi Crogan and all staff who were involved as the week could not have gone better.

The excitement continued into the weekend with Friday night’s official launch of the St Philip’s College History Book: The Right Amount of Crazy. Which I must say is the perfect name for a book on St Philip’s. It was a great event, with some fascinating stories and wonderful people. I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of the book (which you can do either from Reception or Red Kangaroo Books). Then we rolled onto Saturday night for the Baby Boomers Bash, which drew approximately 250 people into The Minnamurra Hall, for what was a great night of dancing. Thank you to InTatters, Leah Bateman, Lisa-Marie Burgoyne and Johnny Skidd & the Chanfloozies (who came out of retirement for just one night) celebrating 30 years as a day school in our unique kind of way. Finally, on Sunday we celebrated our Uniting Church connection at the Swag Chapel with a beautiful service which capped off the week perfectly.

These events over the weekend just don’t happen overnight, and take months of planning. I would like to thank our entire St Philip’s community for pulling together to help make everything such a success, in particular Jill Jansons, Paul Bailey and Harry Carter who together with the generosity and support of our staff and families and friends made the 30th anniversary memorable for all.

Regards,

Roger Herbert Principal

A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean. People watched her with amusement.

She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”

The girl seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, she bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!”

The old man looked at the girl inquisitively and thought about what she had done and said. Inspired, he joined the little girl in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved.

Back to School Vouchers

Xavia Music Workshop

Round Square Week so far..

Teacher Exchange

The $150.00 NT Government Back To School vouchers expire at the end of Term 1.

They are currently being held in the Uniform Shop but if parents would like to apply the voucher to their school fees please contact Lyn Tieck 8950 4525 [email protected]

The Year 8 Music classes were visited by a local songwriter and musician, Xavia in Week 5 and 6. Xavia is well established in her career and has lived and played in Nashville and travelled around Australia performing.

Xavia started learning Cello from an early age and this spawned her career in songwriting, quite different from a few of her classically trained friends. She played her cello, autoharp, and used a loop pedal to record live music and plays it back in a loop, in real time, to a lush, ambient backing to her lilting vocals. She also used her instruments percussively, along with some Central Australian seedpods as a shaker.

Xavia played her song ‘Horizons’ which has almost a million plays on Spotify and was produced by Dave Crowe. She told the students about how the landscape provided inspiration for this song. She also performed an upcoming release called ‘Rainfall’, which was inspired by rain falling on Uluru, and the sun hitting the rock, making it look like a crown.

The students asked questions about where she had played, what the buttons on an autoharp do and where she performed around town. After the Q and A session, the students did some warm ups and sang a round called ‘Bella Mama’. Some also had a go at singing into the microphone attached to the loop pedal.

Xavia’s other commitments this week were to speak on the ABC radio and also play at the Women’s Day performance on the 8th March. Some clips of her performance are available on the school Facebook page. If you are interested in checking out more of Xavia’s music, her website is www.xaviamusic.com, where you can watch for some exciting new upcoming releases.

Deputy Principal of Middle School, Tony Knott and English Teacher, Amanda Small have returned from their teacher exchange. Last week Tony and Amanda travelled 7 hours North East to Alpurrurlam/Lake Nash.

The trip involved Tony and Amanda being integrated with the school system in Alpurrurlam. This included class observations, promoting St Philip’s College & the boarding facilities, and getting to know the culture the kids grow up in.

The students all seemed to be very excited at the prospect of coming to join our community and made sure to show off theirs to Tony and Amanda. Whilst in the community, the kids took Tony and Amanda down to the local river and even managed to do some fishing, something they don’t get the opportunity to much here in town!

Both Tony and Amanda enjoyed the quietness of the community and really believe that they have helped invigorate some excitement into the students to make the life changing move to Alice Springs. St Philip’s is looking forward to maintaining this new found relationsip with the community into the future.

Catching up with the Girls’ Boarding House

Term 1, Week 7

What a huge weekend it was in Girls’ Boarding. It started on Thursday night when we all went to see Bennelong, the latest offering from the world renowned Bangarra Dance group at Araluen. It was so impressive, but also very poignant and moving. After the show the cast came out to meet with the girls, a huge thanks to them for their infinite patience as the girls asked lots of questions and took loads of selfies with the dancers. Many thanks to Libby from Bangarra who organised this for us.

After the Performing Arts Festival at school on Friday we all went off to Albrecht Oval to watch this week’s round of the Youth WAFL Competition. We have a total of 12 players in four of the five teams and it was great to see so many taking part. We also have a couple of frustrated older players who are now too old for the youth competition and waiting keenly for the adult competition to start soon. On the way home we picked up pizzas and finished off with ice cream so it was an enjoyable evening.

On Saturday our U16 basketball team was missing a couple of key players, as Jasmine and Mereoni were both in Darwin to play WAFL and netball respectively! Thanks to Elly and Gina for stepping in. While we scored some great baskets we were no match for the competition’s leading team.

It was a different story on Monday night when our Women’s team played a wonderful 34-34 draw and would have won if it hadn’t been for starting the game with a two point penalty. It was a first class performance with some really intelligent play under the goal, but most importantly every team member gave 100% throughout the match.

On Saturday evening we went bowling. It was a fun night and Sharntai scored 155! (which is a Girls Boarding record by a long way).

On Sunday the girls visited the Reptile Centre which they all enjoyed and many thanks to Tammy, who took them. When I asked one of our new boarders if it had been good she replied , ‘No it wasn’t good – it was great!’ and I hope that’s how most of them felt about the whole weekend.
