Alpine environments of Australia, New Guinea

and NZ differ from each other in terms of

topography, genesis, climate & biota and

contrast strongly with northern hemisphere

paleobotany, biogeography, ecology and plant

and animal systematics have been used here

to give an understanding of the bio-historical

This book provides clear descriptions of the

concentrating on those of agricultural

significance. The descriptions are divided into

three groupings, native/pasture,

introduced/pasture and introduced/weed

grasses. A double page spread is devoted to

each species with a description and

photograph of the plant as well as diagrams of

identifying features. Although the book only

covers a small proportion of the total number

of species in the state, notes on similar species

are included at the foot of each description.

The book includes a glossary. Given that

grasses form such an important component of

our landscape, this is a useful guide.

6 Geology Tasmania Wonderstruck - treasuring Tasmania’s

caves and karst

Haygarth, Nic 2016 Forty South Publishing,

Lindisfarne 7015

Caves are places of wonder and mystery. By

1840 a Gothic regime of candles and bark

torches. heightened the thrill of the ‘Sublime’

within Wet Cave on Mole Creek, in northern

Tasmania. More than a dozen Tasmanian

tourist caves, from Gunns Plains to Ida Bay,

have glistened in guiding light. Farmers turned

to home-baked hospitality when the Industrial

Revolution mobilised urban excursionists,

opening private ‘show’ caves by the glow of

acetylene gas. After World War II, Sam Carey’s

Tasmanian Caverneering Club, the first

Australian caving club, began a quest to

discover, record and protect Tasmanian caves

which continues today. Wonderstruck:

treasuring Tasmania’s caves and karst is the

story of these journeys of subterranean

discovery, the myths and the legends, the

explorers and the ecological battlegrounds, the

‘master’ caves and the megafauna dens, the

entrepreneurs and the raconteurs.

6 Geology Tasmania; walks Step into History in Tasmanian Reserves. Leaman, David 2001 Leaman Geophysics, Hobart This is an extension of Leaman’s previous

book, Walk into History in Southern Tasmania,

this time covering the state’s parks and

reserves. A geological overview provides a

foundation before the book launches into

detailed descriptions of walks within the

state’s parks and reserves. Leaman covers

anything from Federation Peak to the Creepy

Crawly Nature Trail. In fact he goes into more

depth for the shorter walks, and provides

interesting historical and geological

information for each area. The book contains

a wealth of excellent photographs as well as a

glossary, index and reading list. An interesting

addition is an appendix discussing park and

reserve management.

6 Geology Tasmania; walks Walk into History in Southern Tasmania. Leaman, David 1999 Leaman Geophysics, Hobart This is not a conventional walking guide or a

geology field guide, but an interesting mix,

describing 64 reasonably accessible day walks

in the southern region. Most of these walks are

centred about Hobart and Mt Wellington,

extending as far as Orford, Huon and Channel

and Tasman Peninsula. They are not just

walks but insights into the places in terms of

their natural history, dependent on the

underlying geology, as well as the more recent

human history. The author also reviews several

controversial planning issues and major

developments where geology has been given

inadequate attention, in the hope that such

mistakes can be avoided in the future.

Members who attended David’s talk and

outing last year will remember the Long Beach

dune saga at Sandy Bay, and the issues vexing

the cliffs at Taroona.

Inland Waters: ID Guide No.8

Hawking, John H. and Smith,

1997 Co-operative Research Centre

for Freshwater Ecology, Murray-

Darling Freshwater Research

Centre, Albury

This field identification guide to freshwater

invertebrates is designed for students, field

ecologists, amateur collectors, fishermen and

community riverwatch workers. It lists the

invertebrates in taxonomic groups: the

sponges, hydras, jellyfish, primitive worms;

polychaetes; segmented worms, leeches;

freshwater snails and mussels; water mites;

crustaceans,; and the bulk of the book is

dedicated to the insects. Colour photographs

of 200 of the more easily recognisable

organisms aids with identification. Each

section begins with features of the group, then

broad classification. Descriptions go to family

or genus level and include size; habitat;

distribution; and trophic status, and the

number of recorded species is given. Each

section is colour coded for quick field

reference. Includes references and glossary.

Tasmania Tasmania’s offshore Islands: seabirds and

other natural features

Brothers, Nigel; Pemberton,

David; Pryor, Helen & Halley,

Vanessa

2001 Tasmanian Museum and Art

Gallery, Hobart

A fascinating book, focussing on seabird

populations on 280 of Tasmania’s offshore

islands. Islands are important as significant

refuges for a diversity and abundance of

wildlife. The book is the result of twenty years

of meticulous field study by Parks and Wildlife

biologist Nigel Brothers. The book begins with

a summary of the salient characteristics of

each of the breeding seabirds, including

distribution, breeding and migration patterns.

Then the islands are described, divided into

geographic regions with location maps. Each

individual island’s topography, landscape

features and geology are briefly summarised,

with a topographic map, before the breeding

seabird species are listed and discussed, and

dominant vegetation noted. Human history is

not discussed apart form briefly listing human-

made structures present. As well as a general

subject index the book includes a bird index

and island index. Appendices include

information on land tenure and conservation

status, common and scientific names for flora

and fauna, and a table of islands on which no

breeding seabirds ere found. References and

bibliography included.

Triggs, Barbara 1999 OUP, Melbourne This edition is much more comprehensive than

the previous edition. The guide is divided into

four sections dealing with tracks; scats;

shelters, feeding signs and other traces; and

bones of Australian mammals. Each section

introduces the reader with general

information, followed by a separate key

designed to lead you to specific information

helpful in identifying your find. Photographs

of tracks include a scale, and diagrams of

tracks are also helpful. Detailed drawings of

the underside of the animal’s foot are an

interesting addition. Distribution maps for

each species are given within the Scats section.

Colour photographs of scats and shelters are

included, while b&w photographs of skulls,

lower jaws, humeri and femurs (with scales)

make these easier to identify. Domestic and

introduced mammals are also included.

Tadpoles of South-eastern Australia. A

Guide with Keys

Anstis, Marion 2002 World Wildlife Fund for Nature.

New Holland

It is much easier to find tadpoles than frogs,

but how to identify them was the difficulty.

This is a rigorously detailed book setting out to

solve this problem. After some background on

frog classification, developmental stages and

conservation issues as well as notes on

collecting and raising tadpoles, there are

detailed keys covering tadpole, egg and

embryo. Section three covers the species in

south-eastern Australia, grouped by family.

Two or more pages are devoted to each

species, with colour photographs of both the

frog and tadpole stages, a distribution map,

line and stipple scientific illustrations of each

tadpole and its oral disc (one of the chief

identifying features). There are descriptions of

embryos and tadpoles as well as notes on

distribution and breeding sites,

metamorphosis and similar species. Contains

index and references. The author has certainly

put many years of research into this book. The

beautiful illustrations are all her own work,

and she is also responsible for most of the

photographs.
