Extracurricular activities

I t’s been lovely to see the change in seasons and much warmer starts in the in the morning. Spring has brought a

new renewed attitude to our school community. The weather has been lovely and more light in the day has meant our staff and students are getting outside and enjoying wellbeing activities to help them perform at their best. With holidays approaching I hope that everyone can use this time to recharge their batteries for one last push to the finish line.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE IMPORTANTCOVID gave us a huge eye opener of the extra stuff that we do at school. Losing our freedoms to compete against other schools and achieve more than just the 3 R’s showed us just how much out students contribute to building the culture of our school. Our students

are often engaged in activities that give them the confidence to achieve in many different ways, giving them the skills and a taste of achievement they then carry into the world of work and their adult lives.

The successes we have had this year in moving to online learning, our students winning citizenship awards, and our sports teams winning district sporting competitions makes me very proud as a principal of both our students and staff. It showcases our school in the community and further develops school pride in our students. Well done to all.

Because extracurricular activities correlate with a stronger social self-concept and increased skills, employers want to see these activities on resumes. Many of the

skills used on a daily basis in jobs are practised more often during extracurricular activities.

• Setting goals and working toward them

• Collaborating with colleagues• Speaking publicly• Organising time effectively• Designing and leading projects

and project teams• Listening to the views and

concerns of others• Competing against other

groups• Juggling multiple duties

Students need to have access to the broadest possible range of enriching choices and the encouragement to take them up. At CYS we are lucky to have a staff that also value these activities and are prepared to do the extra work required to facilitate them.

PUPIL FREE DAYLast Friday was our Pupil Free Day and the staff worked with renowned restorative practices trainer and leader Kerrie Sellen.Restorative practices revolve around the language and solid foundational relationships required to change negative behaviour in class. It is also a way that we can teach students to improve their resilience and respect for one another in and out of school.

It was really exciting to see the way we need to act and frame questions to students to help them improve both academically and holistically. It also gives our staff the tools to build the capacity of our students to deal with high expectations required to improve results. This is going to be a further focus in 2021 and we can’t wait to plan and put our theory into practice. Parents are

asked to drop off and pick up their students at the school gates and not enter the site.

HATS ON IN TERM 4A reminder that day 1 next term all students will be required to be wearing approved hats at all times whilst out in the sun. Students will have got used to not wearing them in Terms 2 & 3 so they will need reminding to observe correct sun smart behaviour. We ask for your support in this by ensuring that all students have hats ready to go for the first day of next term.

CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR 2021Don’t forget to let us know, in writing, if your child will not be attending Central Yorke School next year. Also, if you have family or friends moving to the district and who definitely want to enrol their children here, please let us know so they can be considered in the class placements.

We’d like as much information about 2021 numbers as possible so we can structure the classes according to student needs.

If you would like any more information on next year please feel free to make an appointment with either myself or Linda.

NO HOLIDAYS FOR YEAR 12’STo our Year 12 students: I ask you to spend a large portion of the holiday studying and preparing for the exams which start in week 4 of next term. Your break should come after your exams and when final study commitments are over. Good luck, as hard work now will pay off with better results.

Until Next Time

Term 3 Sport9 A SIDE FOOTBALL

T he Year 8/9 nine-a-side football competition was held at Maitland on Wednesday the 9th of

September in a slightly modified version in that there were combined 8/9 boys teams this year instead of separate year levels.

The CYS boys team started well under coach Xenos defeating Minlaton 25 – 17 and then they continued on defeating Moonta 46 – 0 and MLS(2) 108 – 6 setting up a Grand Final appearance against MLS1. It was a fast-paced game with both sides going hard for the ball. Eventually CYS ended up victors 20 – 16.

The CYS girl’s team battled hard under coaches Sophie B and Georgia but were outclassed by Minlaton 52 – 6 in the first game. After a positive start with the wind in their second game CYS went into half tie with a narrow lead but unfortunately were overrun by Moonta finishing 25 – 7 down.

This set up a battle between CYS and MLS once again. With the wind behind them CYS kicked straight and managed to put together a few goals but again were overrun in the second half by MLS with the final score being 42 – 25.

LUNCHTIME SPORT

T his term we held a Volleyball tournament at lunch times for year 8 – 12 students and the teachers. It was a very competitive competition

with all teams vying for the 4 semi final spots. After the minor rounds the top 4 included the Teachers team, the combined CYS/AAS Year 12 PE team, the Year 10’s and the Year 9’s.

With the favourites for the two semi-finals being the teachers and the Year 12’s a large crowd gathered to watch the much anticipated match ups. Amazingly there were two upsets both with very tight 3 set tiebreakers which saw the Year 9’s defeat the tournament favourites (teachers) and the Year 10’s managed to overcome the fast finishing 12PE team to set up a Year 10 vs Year 9 final. The Year 10’s took their late form into the Grand Final winning in 3 sets, 15 – 4, 6 – 15, 7 – 5.

SAPSASA EVENTS

O ver the past few weeks we have had three SAPSASA championships including the Football, Netball and Hockey. Congratulations

to Barnaby, Brody, Sam, Tyson and Josh (injured) who were selected to play in the football championships, Emily, Marley and Annabel in the netball championships and Bella, Pearl, Kiala, Jordyn and Dylan in the Hockey Championships.

It was a hard fought tournament for the football boys but they managed to end on a high defeating Whyalla by a couple of goals. The netball team won 4 of their matches to finish equal 5th and the girl’s hockey team (combined SYP/NYP) finished in third spot (with Coach Kelly) and the boys finished in 7th spot. Well done to all students for making their respective teams and representing CYS and the YP with pride.

The Stage 1 and 2 Outdoor Education

students attended the Rock climbing camp at

Warren Gorge in week 7.

The weather was pretty well perfect and climbing

conditions were great.

Under the guidance of the Wilderness Escape

instructors’ students had a great time climbing

and abseiling with many doing very well to go

outside of their comfort zone to complete climbs.

The Year 2 Class have been using modular patterns to create their own individualised model castles.

Students learned modelling techniques including scoring (to create sharp creases), flanging (to support circular structures and improved gluing methods.

They explored the concepts of castle keeps, crenellations, moats and battlements then adapted basic modular patterns to design and model their

castles. Students 'value-added' to their castles with fancy flags, lava defences, cannons, flower gardens and portcullises.

The Year 3/4 Class have been exploring Chinese Inventions in STEM lessons. Last week we made our own paper by recycling scraps of coloured paper.

We started by tearing coloured paper into strips, making sure the edges were rough and lots of fibres were showing. Then we soaked the paper in water over lunch.

The wet paper was placed in a food processor to shred together, then we used paper towels to separate the paper pulp from the water.

Finally, we pressed the pulp through a sieve and set our newly made paper out to dry. Some students experimented with mixtures of colours, and we're hoping to make some more paper with petals.

ELC students visit the School Community Library each week

to explore the library, borrow books and work with teacher-librarian Pat

Hasting.

Library visits are a great way to encourage a love of books and reading and help

children become more familiar with their local surroundings. Borrowing books

also teaches responsibility in caring for things that belong to other and helps

them feel more like a member of their local community.
