What is scientific inquiry?• Scientific inquiry refers to the activities
through which students develop knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, as well as an understanding of how scientists study the natural world.

• Ask a question that interests you or express an idea that can be tested.> What liquid is more viscous: water, dish soap, or hand
sanitizer?
Step 1: Asking a Question

Step 2: Making a Hypothesis
• Research information and previous discoveries that might help you answer your question.
• Develop an educated guess. This is your hypothesis.• Make a prediction based on your hypothesis and state it as a
cause‐effect relationship.

Step 3: Designing the Experiment• Identify your variables.• Decide what materials and equipment you will need.• Write a procedure that explains how you will conduct your
experiment. Be sure to include safety precautions.• Draw and label a diagram.• Create a table to record your results.

Step 4: Conducting the Experiment• Follow the steps in the procedure carefully.• Use all equipment safely.• Record the variables you are measuring.• Remember to repeat your experiment at least 3 times. This
helps increases the accuracy and reliability of your results.

In a group of 3-4Choose one of the following questions to answer:
• Does the type of paper affect how far a plane will fly?• Does a paper plane's wingspan affect how far it will fly?• Does a paper plane's weight affect how far it will fly?• Does the shape of a paper plane's wings affect how far
it will fly?• A question of your choosing - approved by the teacher
You will build paper planes and test your question using scientific inquiry. You will come up with your design, build the planes and we will test the planes tomorrow. You will pass in a final copy of the lab with attached diagrams and procedure next Tuesday.
