The finer points of arrowhead collecting By DOUG GRAVES

Stumble on one along a creek side or in a farm field and consider yourself lucky.

Discover one in pristine condition and you hit a small jackpot. Build a small collection of arrowheads, and you might have hit the mother lode.

The first arrowheads were created thousands of years ago and were carved out of various materials such as flint, agate, jasper and quartzite. They repre-sent some of the earliest known remnants as to how our prehistoric ancestors lived. That said, collecting arrowheads is a somewhat esoteric hobby within the greater antiques and collectibles field.

“If you have the time, patience and know where to search the odds are good of finding a few arrowheads,” said John Elsbernd, owner of Fort Ancient Trading Post in Oregonia, Ohio.

Prime spots to look, Elsbernd says, are streams and farmland.“Farmland is one hotspot that arrowhead enthusiasts head for, but modern

farming methods are changing this search somewhat,” Elsbernd said. “With no-till farming, tractors aren’t plowing up the fields as they once did. It was not unusual to see people out in the fields in the spring, following farmers who had just disked their fields. But the popularity of no-till farming has sent many of those same arrowhead hunters back to creek beds.”

Valley Auctions will offer glimpse into the wild westEric C. Rodenberg

DUBLIN, Va. – Bronc buster, rodeo champion and a star of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Shows, Harry S. Knight, an easy-going, slow spoken 6- footer, was every bit of the storybook Western hero.

Born in 1878, Knight was in Tomb-stone, Ariz., and remembered the “Earp Vendetta Ride,” when Deputy U.S. Marshal Wyatt Earp rode out of town with a posse looking for the “out-

law cowboys” who had ambushed his brothers Virgil and Morgan.

Growing up in Tombstone, it was said that Knight personally knew the Earps, Doc Holliday, and later during his show years, he became friends with

Col. Buffalo Bill Cody, sharp-shooter Annie Oakley, outlaw Cole Younger and Frank James, brother of the infamous Jesse James.

Knight’s family had moved to Tombstone from Oregon, where his father served as a govern-ment Indian Agent for several years, rode as an Indian Scout with Cody, and served in the Idaho Legislature, in addition to ranching in Nevada.

The move to Tombstone was made in Conestoga wagons “with big teams lugging at the traces,” according to a 1954 article in Southwest Rancher magazine.

Tombstone, settled among and atop silver mines, was booming in the mid-1880s. The town had a bowling alley, four churches, two banks, three news-papers and an ice cream parlor, along-side 110 saloons, 14 gambling halls

and numerous dance halls and broth-els, according to published reports.

Knight’s father had moved the fami-ly to this boomtown to fulfill a contract with the U.S. government for hauling 200,000 cords of wood. Once the con-tract was fulfilled, his father traded a team, harness and wagon for 160 acres

more sought-after lots in the Aug. 8 online only sale at Valley Auctions.

BreyerFest cantered into the virtual worldBy Nancy Kelly

In a typical year, when the steamy hot month of July rolls around, thousands of model horse collectors gather in Lexington, Ky., to experience BreyerFest. Unfortunately, 2020 has not been a typical year so this epic model horse event was forced to cancel the in-person cel-ebration and move the festivities online. It normally takes 14 months to plan, organize, and implement BreyerFest. However, on April 13, 2020 the decision was made to take it virtual, leading to about 10 weeks of scrambling, experimenting, and trying to prepare for the event.

This year’s theme was Celtic Fling, and many of the activities tied into that. Prior to and during the event the BreyerFest team kept participants informed by updating the Breyer-Fest Blog. That became a central location for learning about new and different routines and events. But how would they simulate the live experience of BreyerFest?

The place to start was the Virtual BreyerFest (VBF) website which was created with but-tons to permit entry into the various activities. Tickets sold for BreyerFest this year permit-ted full participation, or limited participation depending on the price. When logging into the VBF site, only those events that were authorized were visible. Normally there are many activities that in-person attendees can enjoy, and most of those were recreated fairly well in the internet world. With a click on the VBF website the adventure began!

BreyerFest hosts three very competitive model horse shows. This year, the entrants were able to participate by photographing their models and uploading them into the appropriate show; open, youth, or breakables. The open show alone reported that their judges sorted through 27,000 photos. One of the advantages of showing this way was that the horses did not need to be packed and hauled to Kentucky, avoiding damage. Awards were then mailed to the winners.

The BreyerFest special run horses are always a highlight, and again different special runs were available depending on the ticket level purchased. Selecting the special run store but-ton at the assigned time shoppers were allowed to enter and purchase their treasures, then complete their purchase using the Breyer website store checkout. Because models could not be purchased in person this year, Breyer offered all USA customers free shipping throughout the weekend. Canadian collectors were charged a $10 flat fee to cover all models and interna-tional buyers $25, all of which were a great bargain!

Many helpful seminars and workshops are always offered at BreyerFest. With a click of the “Talks and Presentations” button everyone could access such topics as “Repairing Models”, “Learning to Collect”, “Hobby History”, or the beloved story of Sargent Reckless, the Korean War horse. People who purchased the highest level of VBF ticket could also

click the “Workshops” button and gain additional information on topics such as “Painting the Peepers”, “Pasteling Your Horse”, “Etching Decorators”, “Dapples and Duns”, and “Car-

Above: After paying for BreyerFest tickets, those attending then logged into the Virtual BreyerFest website and were immediately greeted with these buttons that directed them to their desired destinations. From this selection one could shop at the Breyer store, attend workshops, watch videos of live horses, and much more.

as “Repairing Models”, “Learning to Col-lect”, “Hobby History”, or the beloved story of Sargent Reckless, the Korean War horse. People who purchased the highest level of VBF ticket could also click the “Workshops” button and gain additional information on topics such as “Painting the Peepers”, “Pasteling Your Horse”, “Etching Decorators”, “Dapples and Duns”, and “Carriage Horse Perfor-mance Set Up”. Because there were so many of these workshop and seminar op-tions, Breyer decided to keep the website active till the end of July to allow every-one the opportunity to view them.

One of the wonderful experiences of BreyerFest at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington is interacting with the live horses, both those that live there year-round and those that are brought in for BreyerFest. In order to compensate for that missed opportunity, there were nu-merous videos featuring the live horses. Breyer honors several horses by creat-ing a model in their likeness and then that horse will appear at BreyerFest as a guest. The owners of each of those horses submitted videos to VBF so that folks could get to know the guest hors-es that their models were created for. Some of those included Benelli the blue roan Clydesdale, Faugh-A-Ballagh the cremello Gypsy Vanner, W.H. Topgun representing the Connemara pony breed from Ireland, and Ballynoe Castle RM who was this year’s Celebration model. There were also numerous videos of Celt-ic breeds, Celtic sport competitions, a video tour of the horse park conducted by Captain Lisa Rakes and her equine part-ner Oliver, and some dramatic presenta-tions as well, all available at the click of the appropriate button. While attendees could not pet the noses of the horses this year, they still got to enjoy their perfor-mances.

To help keep people informed and en-tertained, a live video feed was present-ed numerous times throughout the day with announcements, updates, inter-views, tips, and other fun activities. For the three days of VBF Kimber Goodwin served as tour guide, hostess, and cheer leader presenting various fascinating segments.

Breyer raises money for various horse-related charities during Breyer-Fest by holding raffles and an auction of one-of-a-kind models. Much thought and planning went into how to properly simulate these popular activities while also observing certain legal restrictions. To simplify the raffle, everyone who had purchased an admission ticket was auto-matically entered into the raffle at no ex-tra cost and then winners were randomly drawn.

The auction was a different mat-ter. After much consideration, it was decided to post the one-of-a-kind and

BreyerFestFrom Page 2

highly collectible auction models on the LiveAuctioneers.com website. Bidding took place online over the three days of VBF. Then on the last day, the auc-tion website went “live” with auctioneer John Stessel firing up the bidders and helping to bring in generous prices to benefit Therapeutic Horsemanship, Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement farm, ASPCA, HSUS and 4-H Round Up. Be-cause bidding was open to a much wider audience than usual, thanks to the expo-sure of the internet, there was much ex-citement as the bids soared. There was no buyer’s premium charged, so prices are actual selling prices. The highest selling item was the Breyer Rhennish draft horse in sooty metallic palomi-no that left with a high bid of $10,000. Next highest was the blanket Appaloosa Akhal-Teke cantering model with a high bid of $9,500 followed by the black and white leopard Appaloosa colored Roxy that closed at $9,000. The highly desir-able In-Between Mare in glossy flaxen chestnut sabino also proved popular with a final bid of $9,000. A fun auction lot offered the chance to design your own Breyer model. This unique oppor-tunity was acquired with a high bid of $6,750.

Buttons displayed on the VBF website also provided access to other destinations as well. BreyerFest in Kentucky normal-ly provides a room for hobby artists to display and sell their items, and VBF continued that tradition. When selecting the “Artisan’s Gallery” button, a list of links was provided to take the shopper to each of the artists’ personal websites. The artists reported brisk sales, some saying it was their best BreyerFest ever! Vendors of Breyer model horses and re-lated merchandise were represented on the “Vendor Fair” button, with the list of links taking the shoppers to their web-sites as well.

A closing interview wrapped up the weekend, with Kimber Goodwin inter-viewing Breyer President Tony Fleis-chmann. He expressed how proud and impressed he was with his staff who were able to pull off this new event with no playbook to follow and limit-ed time to make it happen. With the positive feedback he has received he is thinking that even if BreyerFest re-turns to the Kentucky Horse Park in 2021 that there will still be an online component to it so that more people can participate. Many people cannot attend BreyerFest either due to the expense of traveling, conflicting sched-ules, or health considerations. This year 30,000 people were delighted to be able to participate from all around the world, including Costa Rica, Singa-pore, Lithuania, and Qatar.

Next year’s theme is “Horse of a Differ-ent Color” and the dates are July 16-18, 2021. Updates will be available, starting early next year, on the Breyerhorses.com website. Photos used in this article are from that website and from LiveAuction-eers. com

Above: Most of the model horses sold during Virtual BreyerFest were realistic colors, but a few like “Greenman” celebrated the Celtic Fling theme with vibrant colors and ornate decorations.

Below: The one-of-a-kind, black and white Breyer leopard Appaloosa Roxy proved to be very popular with the collectors, closing with a high bid of $9,000.

Below: Breyer creates some of their model horses based on live horses. Often, those horses appear as guests at BreyerFest. This year, the owners of the horses submitted videos so that those purchasing the Breyer models could still get to know their live counterparts.

If you can’t get to the museum, the museum finds a way to youBy Barbar a Miller Beem

PHILADELPHIA — By now, the recre-ation of a Bonnin and Morris pickle stand was supposed to be on exhibit in the fam-ily-friendly discovery center of Philadel-phia’s Museum of the American Revolution. As it graced the mantelpiece of a late-18th century domestic setting, the tiered serving dish would “wow” visitors to “Revolution Place,” located on the museum’s lower lev-el. Instead, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the tiered serving dish has spent several months in the office of R. Scott Ste-phenson, Museum president and CEO. But thanks to a newly released video, the pains-taking process by which Michelle Erickson crafted this exquisite porcelain piece has been documented and is available for all to view on the internet.

For Erickson, a master ceramicist living in Virginia, the 18-minute film represents the culmination of a project that began in 2005, when she had the opportunity to han-dle 1770s pickle stands. Intended for the serving of sweet meats, these wares were the output of the Philadelphia-based Amer-ican China Manufactory; the experience, she recalled, was “a little bit daunting.” What followed was a two-year exploratory process in which she attempted to recreate one of the pickle stands employing a “re-verse engineering” process.

Among her challenges was replicating the three large scallop shells that served as the base of the original. Careful examina-tion revealed evidence of ridges and growth rings, indicating that these shells had not been modeled, but rather livecast, which turns out to be unique to American-made

ceramics of this sort. The hunt for an iden-tical shell culminated when the character-istics of what are known as “Irish baking shells” proved a perfect match. And then there was the matter of the top cup with 32 lobes, “distinctly American,” she continued. Uniting these two elements was a column strewn in “seaweed” and decorated with presscast “shells.” If uniting these elements sounds precarious, it is. But, Erickson com-mented, “It’s incredible how stable the de-sign is.”

Although the process of recreating the Philadelphia-made pickle stand was fea-tured on the pages of the 2007 edition of Ce-ramics in America, Erickson continued to pursue the possibility of producing a video to document the process. Her patience and perseverance paid off in December 2018 when the ceramicist, long acquainted with Stephenson, served as artist-in-residence at the Museum of the American Revolution. Fortuitously, this overlapped the Philadel-phia Museum of Art’s loan of a Bonnin and Morris pickle stand which was, as it hap-pened, manufactured less than a mile away from the Museum.

As part of her residency, Erickson pre-sented an evening program, “American Pickle,” the highlight of which was her con-structing a pickle stand before a live audi-ence, a bold undertaking considering the possible hazards. At one crucial point in the process, she related with a laugh, there was an audible gasp from the audience; one false move might have negated all of her work. She confessed that she had on hand back-up elements of the pickle stand, just in case.

Following her residency, filming of the video was completed in the spring of 2019 at Erickson’s Virginia studio, with final ed-its made early this year. The artist’s keen eye and steady hand, as well as careful at-tention to detail, are captivating to watch as the thrice-fired pickle stand takes form. Erickson noted that she was drawn to the Philadelphia-made ware for reasons other than an appreciation of its aesthetic quali-ties: Although it bears no patriotic slogans, the pickle stand remains a statement of independence, in part because of its Neo-classical design elements, but also because of the fact that a Colonial pottery could pro-duce wares that competed with those made in England.

One day, the recreated pickle stand, ac-companied by an abbreviated version of the video, will be appreciated by visitors to the Museum. “We know there will be a time when the doors will be open again,” Ste-phenson said. Closed since March 13, the Museum continues to present a wide range of online offerings, in addition to the new-ly added video of the pickle stand. Virtual

tours, talks, and demonstrations are avail-able, although a museum experience, he conceded, “cannot be replaced with eyes on the screen.” At a time when one-third of the country’s museums are unlikely to rebound from the pandemic, the Museum’s presi-dent is appreciative of continuing financial support from those making donations and renewing their memberships.

of land west of Phoenix. “On the first night at the new home they camped in the road because the land was full of sagebrush,” Knight told the magazine. “The next day land was cleared, and a two-story house erected on the proper-ty. Cattle feeding was the prime opera-tion until a switch to wheat was made.”

The wheat fell victim to a rust dis-ease, resulting in financial ruin for the family and the household moved to nearby Mohawk Valley where hogs and cattle helped to recoup some of the family finances. Shortly afterward, Knight’s father and brother died, the ranch was sold, and the family moved back to Phoenix.

Harry began working for cattle ranches, where it was customary for cowboys to break their own mounts. Harry immediately gained a reputation of having an uncommon talent for stay-ing atop the orneriest green horses. His ability with a rough string of hors-es qualified him for top wages of $45 a month, compared with the monthly $35 a regular cowpuncher earned.

That soon lead Knight to the rodeos, where he earned a bevy of champion-ship belts, saddles and prize money. Af-ter winning the bronc riding contest at the Phoenix Fair, the son of Arizona’s governor set up a match riding con-test pitting Harry against a San Diego bronc buster with the reputation of be-ing the best on the West Coast. Harry won the match and his reputation was made. He rode in several of the top ro-deos in the West during the 1920s, be-coming a champion bronc rider during the first Calgary Stampede in Canada. He is listed in the Calgary Stampede Hall of Fame.

Still in his early 20s, Harry drift-ed down to Los Angeles where he got a job breaking green horses for a sta-ble that was supplying horses to the English cavalry fighting the Boer War (1899-1902). It was in Los Angeles that Knight met Col. Cody backstage during one of the shows.

“When Harry told the Colonel that his father had been in service with him as a scout, Cody asked his father’s name,” Knight reminisced to the mag-azine. ‘Knight,’ answered Harry. ‘Ira Knight?’ asked the Colonel. Assured that it was, Cody promptly offered, and Harry promptly accepted a job on the show.”

Knight worked for 11 years with Buf-falo Bill’s show, according to the story, quickly rising to Boss Hostler, Parade Marshall, Arena Director and star per-former in the rough riding acts. “The majority of the cowboys drank to ex-cess, including Cody, so because of Har-ry’s organizational ability and sobriety, he nearly ran the show,” the magazine reported.

Later in the 1930s, Knight settled in Yuma, Ariz., and started the first dude ranch. Rustic, but unique, the Triangle H.C. Ranch was a success. Still tac-iturn, and spare of words, Harry was popular with the tourists, and once prodded, would tell some of the stories of the Old West. He sold the ranch in 1948.

At the ranch, he decorated the cabin with authentic Native American woven baskets, ceremonial pipes, beaded moc-casins and other indigenous apparel. After his death at the age of 97, Har-ry’s 1866 Winchester rifle, his Native American artifacts (some dating back to the 1870s) photographs and other memorabilia was passed down through the family where they were used as home show pieces. Harry’s grandson – who is the last living family descendant - is downsizing and moving into small-er quarters, and decided to part with the items. Valley Auctions of Dublin, Va., is conducting an online absolute auction ending on Aug. 8 at 10 a.m.

ValleyFrom Page 2

The sale will be conducted on Valley Auctions website and Liveauctioneers.com. There will be more than 500 lots. Although some of the items come from other consignors, the bulk of the mate-rial is from Harry Knight’s estate.

“This is really going to be a fun auc-tion,” Larry G. Clevinger, a life-long antiques dealer and Valley Auction cataloger, said. “One of the great things about handling this material is that you know that it’s the real deal. There are so many fakes out there, and some of them are pretty good.

“But we have actual photographs taken in the 1930s with Harry stand-ing among these baskets. The auction is gaining a lot of attention. We already have more than 300 registered bidders, and it’s still very early in the game.

Among those items being sold are Harry’s well-used Winchester Third Model 1866 rifle, made in 1870; a hand-some 1920s-era Sioux beaded hide vest (which may have been custom made); an early 20th century beaded and quill Sioux pipe bag (accompanied by a photo with Harry and the bag from the 1930s); a 19th century Paiute bur-den basket (also accompanied by a vintage photograph); a late 19th cen-tury Catlinite ceremonial pipe; a rare 1870s-1880s Shoshone hide and wood-

en saddle frame probably used by a female rider; at least three early 20th century beaded moccasins (two Sioux and one Arapaho); and a pair of beaded gauntlets, circa 1905-1910, which are thought to have been given to Harry from Col. Cody.

Also, of interest are Harry Knight’s Buffalo Bill Show spurs, purchased in 1891 for $2.50. Harry used the spurs in

Buffalo Bill’s show from 1900 to 1912, and on his Triangle H.C. Ranch.

“It’s not often anymore to come across these authentic items with such prove-nance,” Clevinger said. Harry Knight packed a lot of living in his 97 years. He was a true pioneer of the West.”

ArrowheadsFrom Front Page

understanding of their lives, move-ments and historical events that may have forced them to move. The Shawmut Indiana used to live in the area outside of Boston that is now Logan Airport, and that’s all runways and lights now.”

• Many Native Americans were sea-sonally nomadic and had long-term and short-term camps. The Indians moved to saltwater estuaries with freshwater origins when Atlantic salmon moved into the tributaries to spawn just as they migrated to hard-wood stands near fields when wild turkey moved into fields to feed. Elk, they said, prompted Indians to move to higher elevations in the summer and lower elevations in the winter. “Finding these seasonal hunting and fishing grounds is a great way to find arrowheads,” Candillo said.

• Third on the list is finding the water source. Water was an integral part of every Native American camp. “Lakes, ponds, shallow creeks and riv-ers that offered clean, pure water are great places to find arrowheads,” Thomas said, “but sometimes these seeps and small creeks suffered from big flows during the spring runoff or dried up in the summer, and they might be a waste of time.”

• Fourth, they say, is to time your search. “Seasonality plays an import-ant role in consistently finding arrow-heads,” Thomas said. “Spring is the best time of the year because the ground is soft and the topsoil is often washed away during runoff. Farmers expose the land each spring when they disc the soil, so exposure to the soil below is key.”

• Fifth on the list is knowing the stone. Differentiating between broken rocks and arrowheads is easy, they

say. “Arrowheads have a point, an edge and a base,” Thomas said. “They needed to be made from strong stone that could be sharpened and light enough to fly true. Quartz, limestone and marble all had their uses, but arrowheads were mostly made from chert, obsidian and flint.”

• Lastly, they say, is to identify your arrowhead. One reliable arrow-head identification databases is at typology.arrowheads.com. More than 60,000 images that have been archived can be found here.

As with any hobby, collectors beware. There are people out there willing to chisel stone in order to make fake arrowheads.

“Most of the modern day reproduc-tions, especially those made with fraudulent intentions, are extremely difficult to detect,” Thomas said. “Some modern flint knappers who replicate these relics oftentimes do so openly, and they market their prod-ucts as ‘reproductions’. Those intend-ing to make buyers think they’re the real deal poses the biggest threat to this hobby. It’s been known that these forgers will visit museum collections, invest in reference books, visit arti-fact shows…all in the quest of master-ing their fake craftsmanship.”

According to Thomas, modern day knappers have access to quarried Obsidian, Dacite, Steatite, Novaculite, Chert and other material. These are the same material that was used to create authentic arrowheads and stone tools.

Not all arrowheads were made with stone, though. In coastal areas, arrow-heads may have been made from a variety of other materials like clam and oyster shells. Even bone arrow-heads, they say, are relatively com-mon.

All the collectors reminded readers to be respectful and only hunt arrow-heads where it is legal to do so and with the permission of the land owner.

Above: Brad Thomas of Franklin, Ohio found these arrowheads along the Great Miami River this spring.

Below: Not all arrowheads are found intact. Shown among a few ideally-shaped arrow-heads, are portions of arrowheads.

Below: This 1 9/16 by 4 3/16 inch Fort Payne chert Adena arrowhead was found in Humphery County in Tennessee. Research indicates it is from the late Archaic to Woodland period, around 500 AD.

Below: Shown is a hematite, three-quarter grooved ax recovered in St. Charles County in Missouri. Measuring 4½ inches long and 2¼ inches wide, this relic sold for $600 recently at auction.

Above: The finer the points, edges and base the more valuable the arrowhead. Arrowheads vary from time period as well. Below: While most arrowheads were used for hunting wild game, some were used as tools.
