Staff Engagement Survey
© 2015 K12 Insight
Overview
Engagement is the sense of connecHon that individuals have with their profession in general and their current jobs in parHcular. Several factors have an impact on one’s level of engagement, including aspects of the working environment such as relaHonships with school administraHon, colleagues, students and parents; the physical working condiHons; a feeling of personal safety; policy consideraHons and implementaHon; support for personal development and growth; prior preparaHon; percepHons of personal relevance; and saHsfacHon. With this informaHon, Blaine County School District hopes to improve condiHons so that all staff members are fully engaged in their profession. Fully engaged employees are key to improving overall producHvity and the quality of educaHon and services provided by BCSD. Because more engaged individuals likely completed the survey, these data may overesHmate engagement among employees district-‐wide.

Technical Notes
Survey Development • In order to increase content validity, survey quesHons were developed in collaboraHon with district
staff. • Most items used a 4-‐point Likert scale. Survey Deployment • The survey was administered via email invitaHons with unique links. Data Analysis and Repor5ng • Results do not reflect random sampling; therefore, they should not be generalized to the enHre staff
populaHon. Rather, results reflect the percepHons and opinions of those 328 employees who responded to the survey.
• The findings for each item in the report exclude parHcipants who did not answer the item. • The findings for each item in the report exclude Not Applicable responses. • Data labels of 5% or less are not shown. • Analysis procedure: 10% or 100 (whichever is greater) of randomized open-‐ended responses were
analyzed for common themes. Common themes are listed from most to least recurrent. High-‐level topic areas, generated from open-‐ended quesHons with < 100 responses, are also provided.

ExecuHve Summary
District-‐Level Summary Similar to the findings from the 2014 Staff Engagement Survey, close to 90% of parHcipants ofen or always feel good about their job in public educaHon. A strong majority of employees are proud to work in the district, feel a sense of accomplishment and believe the district supports opportuniHes for professional growth. Over a third, however, do not trust the informaHon they receive from district leadership. Just shy of 50% of parHcipants do not feel comfortable sharing their ideas and opinions with district leadership and over half Disagree or Strongly Disagree there is a strong sense of teamwork and cooperaHon within the district. AddiHonally, about 40% of staff parHcipants do not believe the district and its administraHon have a clear vision of future goals and educaHonal direcHons of its schools. While 8 out of 10 say district informaHon and decisions are communicated in a Hmely manner, almost half of parHcipaHng staff feel district leaders do not clearly explain why key decisions are made. Over half of parHcipants feel district leaders recognize employees for their quality of work and accomplishments.

ExecuHve Summary (ConHnued)
Site-‐Level Summary Similar to the results of last year’s survey, a majority of parHcipants feel their supervisor exhibits observaHonal skills that provide for relevant reflecHon and accurate assessment of instrucHonal pracHces in the classroom. Generally, parHcipants trust their supervisor and feel moHvated to contribute more than what’s expected. A majority of parHcipaHng staff report they are encouraged and expected to give feedback to improve their work environment and are praised for doing a good job. While most parHcipants feel their building/department leaders create a safe culture of physical safety in the work environment, about a quarter do not feel there is a culture of emoHonal safety. Over a third feel the atmosphere in which they work causes unreasonable amounts of stress in their professional and personal life.

Common Themes to Open-‐Ended QuesHons
Please share sugges5ons for how we can make you feel beWer about working in Blaine County School District. (N=125)
Respondents believe the district would benefit significantly by listening carefully to their feedback on a wide range of school-‐related issues. Because staff members are ‘on the front lines’ and have hands-‐on experience with parents and students, they feel their feedback is essenHal.
Staff members feel the number of new iniHaHves and programs introduced this year created challenges for them in the classroom. According to respondents, new programs were being put into place before the exisHng programs were allowed enough Hme to generate meaningful data. Similarly, staff members desire a clear sense of direcHon from district leadership to guide their work in the classroom.
