    AspartofthePortMann/Highway1(PMH1)

    ImprovementProject,interchangesthroughoutthe

    Highway1corridorwillbeupgradedorreplacedtoim

    provesafetyandefficiencyaswellasprovideforcycling

    andpedestrianaccessacrossthehighway.Oneofthe

    mostsignificantinterchangeupgradeswillcomeat152

    StreetinSurrey.Intotal,morethan20interchanges

    along37kmofHighway1willbereplacedorupgraded

    aspart

    of

    the

    project.

    ImprovedTravelforLocalResidentsOncecomplete,thenew10lanePortMannBridgewill

    includethreelanesineachdirectionforthroughtraffic

    aswellastwolanesineachdirectiondedicatedtolocal

    travelbetweenSurreyandCoquitlam.Thisdesignac

    countsforthefactthatmorethan30%ofbridgeusers

    aretravellingbetweenthecommunitiesofSurreyand

    Coquitlam.

    These

    dedicated

    local

    connection

    lanes

    will

    provideaquickandconvenientlink,withtheadded

    benefitofreducedcongestionandimprovedtravel

    timesalongtheentirecorridorinthethroughtraffic

    lanes.AsoneofthebusiestinterchangesalongHighway1andamajorconnectionpointbetweenSurreyand

    Coquitlam,thenew152Streetinterchangewillbecon

    figuredtoconnectefficientlywiththisnewdesign.

    Oncetheimprovementsarecomplete,4laneswillbe

    availablefortrafficaccessingthehighwaywestbound

    fromthe152Streetoverpass.Theseadditionallanes,

    togetherwith

    the

    local

    connection

    lanes

    leading

    to

    and

    crossingthebridge,willdramaticallyimprovewhathas

    traditionallybeenoneofthemostcongestedpoints

    alongthehighway.

    Theimprovementstothe152ndStreetinterchange

    include:

    Newfourlaneoverpasswithtwolocalconnection

    lanesandtwothroughtrafficlanes(A)

    Newpedestrian/cyclistfacilities(B)

    TwonewlocalconnectionlanesprovidingHighway

    1traffic

    with

    access

    to

    the

    dedicated

    lanes

    on

    the

    bridge,connectingCoquitlamandSurrey(C)

    Startconstruction

    the

    noise

    berm

    located

    to

    the

    northofthe152StreetonramptoHighway1.

    Severalclosuresanddetoursonandaroundthe152

    Streetinterchangewerenecessarytoreachthisstageof

    construction.Theseinclude:

    Theeastboundofframploopispermanentlyclosed.

    The110/152intersectionispermanentlyclosed.

    The110AvenueonramptoHighway1isperma

    nentlyclosed.

    Fall2010

    Infall2010crewswillbeginconstructingthenew152

    Streetoverpass.Workwillalsobeginonthereconstruc

    tionandwideningofthewestboundHighway1lanes

    betweenthe152Streetinterchangeandthebridge.

    Thislanewideningworkwilllastforapproximately18

    monthsandwillincludeexcavatingtheareatothenorth

    westoftheonramptoHighway1,andconstructinga

    retainingwalltothenorthofthehighwayonJohnson

    Hill. Inorderforthisworktotakeplace,allwestbound

    highwaytrafficwillbedetouredontothenewlycon

    structedlocal

    connection

    lanes,

    taking

    highway

    traffic

    tothenortharoundthe152StreetInterchange.

    Thisdetourwillalsoalterthecurrenttrafficpatternfor

    driversapproachingJohnsonHill.Onramptrafficwill

    approachJohnsonHillfromtheleftviatheinsidelane,

    ratherthantheshoulderlane,whilehighwaytrafficwill

    approachJohnsonHillfromtherightviatheoutside,

    shoulderlane.

    Spring2011

    Inspring

    2011,

    reconstruction

    of

    the

    eastbound

    High

    way1laneswillcommenceaswellasworkonthe152

    Streetofframp.Duringthistime,eastboundtrafficwill

    beshiftednorth,intowhatiscurrentlythemedianto

    allowcrewstoworkinthisarea.

    Late2011

    Bylate2011,the152Streetoverpasswillbecomplete

    andtrafficwillbeshiftedtothenewstructure.Inaddi

    tion,thenewpedestriantunnelunderthelocalconnec

    tionlaneswillbecompleted,andjoinedtotheoverpass.

    2012

    By2012,theexisting152Streetoverpasswillbere

    movedandeastboundandwestboundHighway1lanes

    willbeshiftedbacktotheoriginalplacement.

    ByDecember2012,thenewPortMannBridgewillbe

    opento8lanesoftraffic.Atthatpoint,theoldbridge

    willberemoved,andthefinaltwolaneswillthenbe

    openonthenewbridge.

    Oncethis

    occurs,

    the

    new

    bridge

    will

    carry

    10

    lanes

    of

    trafficthreethroughlanes,includingoneHOV/transit

    lane,andtwolocalconnectionlanes.

    OnceComplete

    Oncetheimprovementsarecomplete,fourlaneswillbe

    availablefortrafficaccessingthehighwaywestbound

    fromthe152Streetoverpass,twoforthroughtraffic

    andtwoforlocaltraffictoCoquitlam.

    Theseadditionallanes,togetherwiththelocal

    connectionlanes

    leading

    to

    and

    crossing

    the

    bridge,

    will

    dramaticallyimprovewhathastraditionallybeenoneof

    themostcongestedpointsalongthehighway.

    Oncecomplete,thenew152Streetinterchangewill:

    Reducecongestionandmaximizeefficiency

    Improvetrafficflow,bothforthroughtrafficand

    localtraffic

    Improvevehicle,cyclistandpedestriansafety

    EliminatequeuejumpingthroughFraserHeights

    ReducedtraveltimesalongHighway1

    LocalCycling

    and

    Pedestrian

    Improvements

    ThenewPortMannBridgewillincludeabarrier

    separatedthreemetrewidecyclingandpedestrian

    path,withconnectionstoUnitedBoulevardand

    LougheedHighwayinCoquitlamaswellasconnections

    to112StreetinSurrey.

    Thecyclingandpedestrianpathwilltieintoanewpath

    alongthetopofJohnstonHillonthenorthsideofHigh

    way1.Thepathwillcontinuethroughto112Avenue,

    withapedestrian/cyclistoverpass,connectingtoRobin

    Park.

    Thenewpathsystemwillprovideaccessforcyclists

    travellingbetweenSurreyandCoquitlamandcyclists

    travellingbetweenFraserHeightsWestandGuildford.

    Localpedestrianandcyclingimprovementsinclude:

    NewaccessfromFraserHeightstoGuildfordalong

    theimproved152Streetoverpass

    Newoffroadpathbetween108Avenueand110

    Avenue(threemetres)

    Overpassnear112Ave.toconnecttothebridgeon

    thenorthsideandtoRobinParkonthesouthside

    ArtistsrenderingofthenewPortMannBridgewiththroughtrafficandseparatedlocalconnectionlanesaswellasacyclingandpedestrian

    pathontheeastsideofthebridge.

    gradinginterchangesandimprovingaccessandsafety

    onHighway1.

    Theprojectspansadistanceofapproximately37

    kilometresfromtheMcGillStreetInterchangeinVan

    couverto216thStreetinLangley.Theprojectwillalso

    provideforaHighway1RapidBusservice,ajointinitia

    tiveoftheProvinceandTransLink,withservicebetween

    LangleyandBurnabyinlessthan25minutes. Buseswill

    runevery1015minutesduringpeakperiods.Morethan

    20,000peopleareexpectedtousethisserviceby2031,

    reducinggreenhousegasesby10,000to15,000tonnes

    peryear.

    Programandpartofabroaderprovincialtransportation

    visionthat includes:
