The LOEL Senior Center was started in 1976 by William Holz. With an initial $100,000 bequest, the Lodi Elderly, or LOEL Foundation, was born.

The fi rst LOEL site was located at the Hotel Lodi on School Street. Its mission was to be a Senior Agency congregate nutrition site. In 1978, the center and its programs grew when Mr. Holz purchased a vacant church on South Washington Street.

Today, the LOEL Senior Center continues to grow with the community and strives to meet the needs of today's seniors.

Our efforts, in turn, have made Mr. Holz’s dream to love and care for the senior community of Lodi a reality.

This program provides a hot, nutritious meal in a social setting Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. In addition to nutrition, this program is an outlet for seniors to interact with their peers. In 2015, we served 18,015 meals.

The garden is a place in the neighborhood for people of all walks of life from any part of town to enjoy their own garden space to raise fruits and vegetable, herbs, fl owers, get help and advice from a Master Gardner, and perhaps make a friend or two.

For a minimal fee every year any Lodi resident regardless of age, can lease a space in the garden.

In 1976 Mr. Holz, our founder, delivered 10 hot nutritious meals a day, to homebound seniors. The program grew to serving over 100 meals a day up until 2008. The vendor being used went out of business over night without any warning. San Joaquin County stepped in and started providing frozen meals immediately. In 2010 LOEL had a completed commercial kitchen thanks to the City of Lodi funding and private donations and we started preparing our own food for the Daily Lunch in-house. It’s been a priority since the completion of the kitchen to bring back Meals On Wheels. We are excited to say we now have the kitchen and the transportation needed to serve hot nutritious Meals on Wheels once again to the greater Lodi area. LOEL continues to look for donors to help keep the program sustainable.
