SPEAK UP AWARDS Congratulation to our public speaking team who represented Anne Hamersley Primary School at the annual Speak Up Awards. The competition was between primary age children from several other public and private schools. Team mem-bers; Angel Dushime, Ria Goundar & Sofia Schiaffini presented their well-researched speeches with passion and clarity. The girls did themselves and the school proud and we congratulate them on their outstanding efforts. Our sincere thanks go to Mrs Narelle Salomon, our Year 6 teacher, event coordinator, coach and organiser of the event for our stu-dents. The event was also proudly supported by parents on the day, a big thank you to you all. We are delighted to announce that two of our contestants, Ria Goundar and Sofia Schiaffini were amongst the three students selected to progress to the semi-finals. We wish the girls the best of luck.

SCHOOL NUMBERS FOR 2018 Work has already commenced on class planning and new teacher appointments for 2019. As you can appreciate, pre-dicting numbers is difficult. You can assist by coming in and informing us if you will not be returning to AHPS in 2019. The more prepared we are the more we are likely to hold class numbers for as long as possible before a restructure oc-curs.

BALI VISITORS On Tuesday 21 August, we will be hosting visitors form Bali which will be sharing some cultural performances and activi-ties with our students. A special assembly has been organised and is set to start at 9:45 am to welcome our guests. Par-melia 5 will be performing a welcome song which will be followed by some traditional Balinese dancing. Traditional and cultural activities will be shared later in the day with designated classes. Thanks to Miss Danella Brown for her organisa-tion in this matter.

With best wishes

SUSTAINABILITY Worm Whizz – Thank you to all the people supporting our worm whizz franchise. The students work hard to maintain our farm and harvest the whizz that is then sold to the public. All proceeds go to funding our gardening project, running healthy eating cooking classes and learning about sustainable practices. The Bush Tucker Garden – Mrs Burley has been hard at work orangising the new Parmelia Bush Tucker Garden. This wonderful new project will introduce our students to the native Australian plants that have provided food for indigenous people for thousands of years. The location is set to be next to the Parmelia block. Make sure you watch that space! Weekly Waste Warriors - In order to tackle the rubbish problem within our school as well as fostering pride and care for our environment, the Sustainability Team have created the “Weekly Waste Warriors”. A new class is chosen at each Monday Muster and are given special items to help keep our school clean for the week. Since the beginning of Term 2, we have noticed a great difference in the amount of rubbish left around the school. Students are starting to become more aware and taking responsibility not only for their rubbish but waste they see left around the school. Keep up the good work. Mrs Oliver Art Specialist & Sustainability Team Leader

SPECIALIST MUSIC PROGRAM 2019 Ellenbrook Secondary College is proud to be one of only a handful of schools in WA to offer a specialist music program to our students. The program is led by Mr. Stuart Rhine-Davis, who has over 40 years’ experience in public music education. We’re extremely lucky to have someone of his knowledge and expertise leading the

15 bands, ensembles and choirs currently on offer at our College. Since our inception in 2007, the College’s music stu-dents have performed to audiences both near and far. With tours to Canberra, Melbourne and New Zealand, in 2019 we will be adding Brisbane to this list with an invitation to attend the ASPIRE festival. Every ANZAC Day the local RSL asks that we play at Ellenbrook Dawn Service, which we consider an ongoing honour. We regularly attend a variety of compe-titions and most recently, our Contemporary Acoustic Quartet was chosen out of 400 schools to play at OPUS 2018, which was held last month at Perth Concert Hall. We are continuously impressed by the standard of our students’ abili-ties and their work ethic. Our aim for your child throughout the program is to assist in the development of their creativity and curiosity, striving for excellence through their continued participation in music. Ellenbrook Secondary College’s ATAR music students consistently achieve equal to or better than the state average every year, with multiple graduates of our College going on to earn competitive places at the WA Academy of Performing Arts and UWA. If your child is al-ready learning an instrument in primary school through Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) and they wish to enrol at the College for 2019, then they are automatically placed into our program and will continue to receive lessons and participate in our ensembles (in addition to in-school music classes). If, however, you would like your child to be part of the Specialist Music Program and they are not yet learning an instrument, then they are invited to apply to audition at the College on Monday 13 August at 9:00am. All applicants will need to bring a pencil and an eraser. The audition will take no more than 30 minutes, after which your child can return to their primary school. Successful applicants will be notified at a later date. Any queries about our music program can be referred to [email protected] or by calling 9297 9700. The College looks forward to meeting all interested future music students soon!

DESIGN AND CREATE YOUR OWN FAMILY "MONEY" Making money is usually not something that third graders should be worried about. But with this fun craft activity, your child can design and "make" his own money, for use as currency and math practice at home! Putting the faces of family members and pets on these bills makes for a fun reflection of your child's family. Here's how to get started "making mon-ey" at home! What You Need:

4 pieces of lightly coloured paper, one for each colour (for instance: yellow, pale green, pale blue, pink) Scissors Ruler Lead pencil Coloured pencils or pens

What You Do: 1. First, cut out your money. Divide each piece of paper into 7 segments along the long edge, and in half along the

short edge. This should give you a grid of 14 bill-shaped rectangles. 2. Cut out the rectangles and repeat with the other pieces of paper. 3. Decide what units of currency your family money should take. A good place to start is to make one set of coloured

bills be $1, the next $5, the next $10, and the last $20, so each colour represents its own denomination. For each denomination, you will need to choose a family member or pet to draw on the bills. For instance, Mum can repre-sent the $20 bill and her face will appear on each one, Dad can be on the $10 bills, and so on.

4. Take a look at a real dollar bill to figure out what you want to put on your bills. It should be clear what the bill is, so be sure to put the number "1" or "5" in various places. Draw the family member's head in the middle of one side of the bill. The rest of the decoration is up to you!

5. After you have drawn up all of your bills, you should have 14 $1 bills, 14 $5 bills, 14 $10 bills, and 14 $20 bills. Figure out how much money you have!

6. Once you've tallied up how much money is in the "bank," you can distribute some of your cash to family mem-bers. Use your family money as currency in negotiations over chores and treats, and be sure to give proper change!

POSITIVE PARENTING BY PROFESSOR MATT SANDERS As a parent, you want to do the best for your child, but how do you know what’s right? What do you do when your child answers back? Or is being bullied at school? Or starts telling obvious lies? Over coming weeks in THE LANDING POST, I will share some of Triple P’s proven tips for the best ways to handle com-mon behavioural and developmental problems in children. From battling disobedience to encouraging homework rou-tines, I’ll cover those everyday issues to help you work out some strategies to suit your family. I’ll highlight common “parent traps” and hopefully make the very important job of raising kids as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. But remember, parenting is sometimes hard work and it may take time to tackle more difficult problems. The good news is that help is always at hand. Throughout Western Australia, schools together with school psychologists, are offering parenting support with Triple P, one of the world’s most highly-regarding parenting programs. Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program®. For more information go to www.triplep-parenting.net or [email protected] Mrs Bell Deputy Principal
