GREENER WORKPLACEENERGY SAVING DEVICES Why Install an Energy Saver?If your pump is controlled by an electronic device such as a Presscontrol©, then installing an ENERGYSAVER will not only save you money on electricity costs, but will extend the life of your pump. Because it stores energy as water pressure, it will reduce the pump start events by at least 50%, thus saving electricity and if the pump is running only ½ as much, it will last much longer.

Should I check the air in the Energy Saver?The ENERGYSAVER device has a pre-charge of air, which is essential for it to work properly. This should be set at a pressure slightly lower than the start pressure of the pump (around 10%). To set this, the ENERGYSAVER should be completely depleted of water, this can be done by turning the power off to the pump and the water supply from the tank. Then simply open a tap and let all the water run out of the line. Now any pressure left in the ENERGYSAVER will be the pre-charge, and you can check it simply by using a tyre gauge. With an ENERGYSAVER, once the pre-charge is set, it normally does not require checking again ever.

CHOOSING A PUMPWhen choosing a pump, it is good planning to consider some key points before committing to a specifi c pump, such as:

• Match the pump to the application or operation – consider the fl ow rates, pressures required, head heights and the motor power

• Which type of pump will you require? Centrifugal, diaphragm, rotary or some other type?

• Try to make the pump compatible with your current operations. Avoid extensive electrical rewiring, plumbing or new mounting points if possible

• Consider the whole-of-life costings; a higher initial outlay may be offset by signifi cantly cheaper maintenance and operating costs

• Take into account the environment in which the pump will be operating – will the pump produce excessive noise for workers in the area? Will the pump be exposed to extreme temperatures or large changes in temperature? Will the pump be subject to constant vibration or periodic shocks?

• What type of fl ow media will be the pump be moving? Is the media chemically compatible with the pump or overly abrasive? Will the pump media involve suspended solids or slurries at any stage?

AdBlue® is the registered trademark for AUS32 (Aqueous Urea Solution 32.5%) which helps to reduce harmful emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from the exhaust of diesel engined motor vehicles through a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). The technology was developed in response to increasingly strict emissions laws internationally.

Referred to in the US as Diesel Emission Fluid (DEF), AdBlue® is now widely available at service stations throughout Australia and Europe as it is required for trucks and diesel passenger vehicles that use SCR technology.

AdBlue® is injected into the exhaust gases before they pass through the SCR converter, turning the NOx into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour.

AdBlue® is a mixture of approximately one-third pure urea and two-thirds demineralised water. While the solution is non-toxic and safe to handle, it is corrosive for some metals and must be stored and transported using the correct materials.

PUMPSA pump is a device used to move gases, liquids or slurries by displacing a set volume of it through mechanical action. Pumps fall into two major groups: positive displacement pumps and rotodynamic pumps.

A Positive Displacement Pump (PDP) causes a fl uid to move by trapping a fi xed amount of it then forcing (displacing) that trapped volume into the discharge pipe. A PDP can be further classifi ed as either:

• Rotary-type – lobe, internal gear, screw, shuttle block, fl exible or sliding vane, helical twisted roots or liquid ring vacuum pumps

• Reciprocating-type – piston or diaphragm pumps

Rotodynamic pumps more commonly known as Centrifugal pumps, produce a greater fl ow and Head by increasing the velocity of the liquid through the machine with the help of a rotating vane impeller. These types of pumps can be classifi ed further:

• Centrifugal or Radial Flow pump

• Mixed Flow or Screw Pumps

• Axial Flow or Propeller pump

One practical difference between rotodynamic and PDP is their ability to operate under closed valve conditions. PDP physically displace the fl uid; hence closing a valve downstream of a PDP will result in a continual build up in pressure resulting in mechanical failure of either pipeline or pump. Centrifugal pumps differ in that they can be safely operated under closed valve conditions, but for limited periods of time.

Head vs PressureThe Head is not equivalent to pressure. Head is a term that has units of a length (metres) and pressure has units of force per unit area or kPa. Head is a measurement of the height of a liquid column that the pump could create from the energy given to the liquid. Imagine a pipe shooting a jet of water straight up into the air, the maximum height the water goes up would be the Head.

A given pump with a given impeller diameter and speed will raise a liquid to a certain height (Head) regardless of the weight of the liquid.

One fact that must always be remembered: A pump does not create pressure, it only provides fl ow. Pressure is the result of resistance to that fl ow.
