1.6 Multiplying/Dividing Numbers

Reciprocal: The flipped rational number of a given number .

Multiplicative Inverse: The flipped rational number of a given number used in multiplication .

GOAL:

1. (x) = multiply, times, product of:

the product of 3 and 5 (3)5

2. (/) = division, quotient, fraction: The quotient of 3 and 5 3/5

In math we always translate English words into symbols:

When we multiply real numbers there are a few rules we must remember:

Ex: What is each number?

A) 3(-2)- 6 =

B) -3(-2) (2)(3) since (-)(-) +

= 6

Key Concept:

Key Concept:

REAL-WORLD:Your parents have provided you with a $1000 saving account . You want to buy clothes for school and you make a five withdrawals of equal amounts from your bank. The total amount you withdraw is $360. What is the change in your account balance each time you make a withdrawal?

Solution:Due to the fact that you are making equal withdrawals with a total of $360 we have:

$360 / 5 $72 each time

Thus our bank statement will show $ -72 each time we made the withdrawal.

YOU TRY IT:

Find the quotient.

Solution: In math we never divide fractions but we do use the keep-change-flip method.

Keep

× change

Flip
