reiseziele und routenindien, so wird oft gesagt, ist kein land, son-dern ein eigener kontinent. zwischen den ei-sigen gipfeln des himalaya und der üppigen tropenlandschaft keralas erstreckt sich eine unvergleichliche vielfalt an landschaften, kul-turen und völkern. in jeder indischen stadt trifft man auf der straße angehörige mehrerer gro-ßen Weltreligionen, unterschiedlichster sozia-ler schichten und verschiedenster ethnien an, von hellhäutigen Punjabis bis zu dunkelhäutigen tamilen. man findet tempelrituale, die schon zu den zeiten der ägyptischen Pharaonen so voll-zogen wurden wie heute, zwiebelbetürmte mo-scheen, die schon Jahrhunderte vor dem taj mahal entstanden, und an fast jeder ecke zeug-nisse der britischen herrschaft über das land.
dass heute noch so viel von der indischen vergangenheit sichtbar ist, erstaunt angesichts des rasanten tempos des Wandels seit der un-abhängigkeit 1947. angestoßen durch die markt-wirtschaftlichen reformen der frühen 1990er-Jahre, hat die von rajiv gandhi begonnene ökonomische revolution indien mit neuen kon-sumgütern, technologien und lebensstilen über-schwemmt. heute ist das land, in dem buddha lebte und lehrte und dessen religiöse Feste so alt sind wie die Flüsse, an denen sie stattfinden, der zweitgrößte Produzent von computer-software weltweit, mit eigenen satelliten und atomwaffen.
doch dass es jetzt auch in den abgeschie-densten marktflecken internetcafés, smart-phones und tata-nano-autos gibt, hat die Prob-leme, die indien schon seit urzeiten plagen, nur noch deutlicher zutage treten lassen. rund 40 % der inder leben nach wie vor in armut; in keinem anderen land der Welt gibt es slums von sol-chem ausmaß wie in delhi, mumbai oder kolka-
ta (kalkutta) und so viele unterernährte kinder, Frauen ohne schulbildung und behausungen ohne zugang zu sauberem Wasser und zu einer funktionierenden müllentsorgung.
indiens heilige landschaft
indiens religiöse stätten werden in katego-rien unterteilt, von denen die meisten nur bestimmte regionen umfassen. an der spitze der spirituellen rangordnung liegen die sie-ben Heiligen städte oder Sapta Puri (ayodhya, mathura, haridwar, varanasi, kanchipuram, ujjain und dwarka), die nach hinduistischem glauben jedem, der in ihren grenzen stirbt, Moksha garantieren, und die Vier Göttersitze oder Char Dham (rameshwaram, Puri, dwarka und badrinath) an den vier „kompassspitzen“ des landes (nicht zu verwechseln mit den „kleinen“ Char Dham: badrinath, kedarnath, gangotri und Yamunotri in uttarakhand). außerdem hat jede hauptgottheit (mit aus-nahme des in indien unbedeutenden brahma) ihre spezielle Pilgerroute mit eigenen heiligtü-mern. shiva ist mit drei großen tempel gruppen vertreten: zwölf jyotri-linga-tempeln, fünf bhuti-linga-tempeln und 68 svayambhu-linga-tempeln. ebenso gibt es ausgedehnte tempel-rundreisen zu ehren von Mahadevi und Vish nu sowie in südindien regionale heiligtümer, die Murugan geweiht sind. dazu kommen heilig-tümer, die mit den Planeten assoziiert werden (die Nava Graha Sthalas), und orte in der natur von spiritueller bedeutung wie die vier schau-plätze des Kumbh-Mela-Festes (allahabad, haridwar, ujjain und nasik).

warten ein zeitloses asketisches Wunderland und sind erstaunt darüber, eine der materia-listischsten gesellschaften der erde vorzufin-den. noch viel mehr traveller sind anfangs ein-geschüchert durch das, was sie sehen – einen unverständlichen und verwirrenden kontinent. doch trotz aller krassen gegensätze, unlös baren Paradoxien und verdrießlichkeiten ist indien nach wie vor ein unfassbar faszinierendes rei-seziel. seine einzigartige komplexe und uralte Patina – der unbändige trubel in den basaren, die überall zu hörende bollywood-musik, die scharfe mischung aus diesel-abgasen, gewür-zen, staub und dem rauch verfeuerter getrock-neter kuhfladen – zieht besucher ab dem ersten tag in ihren bann. man liebt es, oder man hasst es – und die meisten reisenden schwanken vom einen zum anderen extrem –, aber indien verändert, wie man die Welt sieht.
reisezieledie besten reiserouten für indien sind die einfa-chen. es ist schlicht nicht möglich, auf einer ein-zigen reise alles zu sehen, selbst wenn man ein Jahr zeit hat. am besten konzentriert man sich auf eine oder zwei regionen und ist vor allem eins: flexibel. auch wenn ein ortswechsel aus den städten aufs land einen bewussten rhyth-muswechsel verlangt: das ländliche indien war-tet mit ganz eigenen reizen auf. zwar sind die indischen großstädte zweifellos dynamische ur-bane zentren voller abenteuer, aber man kann auch leicht mehrere monate durchs land rei-sen, ohne je den Fuß in eine zu setzen – weniger stressig ist das allemal.
die meistbesuchte gegend, die sowohl spek-takuläre baudenkmäler als auch die frucht-baren tiefebenen umfasst, ist das sogenannte goldene dreieck im norden: die kolonialhaupt-stadt delhi (s. 139), die heimstatt des taj mahal, agra, in uttar Pradesh (s. 305) und die „rosaro-te stadt“ Jaipur in Rajasthan (s. 183), dem mit seiner Wüstenlandschaft und den imposanten Festungen und Palästen von Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, udaipur und bundi bei reisenden beliebtesten bundesstaat im norden.
