Message from the Padre

In sports, we often hear from sports commentators that the team who

knows how to execute the “fundamentals of the game,” always has the best

chance to win. The same thing with our personal lives. When things become

overly complicated and we are overwhelmed with life’s demands and pres-

sures, we need to get back in touch with the “fundamental values of life,” or in

simple words, we need to “get back to the basics.”

In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus’ response to a scholar of the law,

brings us back to the basics and to the very heart of our Christian faith and that

is the two greatest commandments of the Law: and that is, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your

heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind... You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus sums up

the commandments of the Law of Moses by joining together these two basic commands of love, which we

have come to call the two greatest commandments. These two commandments express with remarkable clar-

ity the heart of our Christian faith. Our love for our neighbor mirrors our love for God.... they are inseparable.

You cannot have one without the other. Without the love of neighbor, the love of God remains a barren emo-

tion; and without the love of God, our love of neighbor is but a refined form of self-love.

And so this weekend, let us reflect on these two greatest commandments. They are not easy com-

mands to follow, but they are words of wisdom that tells us how to love God and our neighbor and gives us the

light of who we are in Jesus’ life and who is our neighbor in Jesus’ name.

Thirtieth Sunday

In Ordinary Time Exodus 22: 20-26

1 Thessalonians 1: 5c-10

Matthew 22: 34-40

In today’s Gospel Jesus is challenged about the greatest com-

mandment. Listen carefully to the language in today’s first

reading from Exodus, which prepares us to hear Jesus’ answer.

The first reading addresses some of the political situations in

our own nation, in our world today. Jesus’ simple reply, rooted

in this Old Testament mandate, is a challenge to all of us. Love

of God and love of neighbor have not changed in two thousand

years.
