Sunday: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wednesday: St. John Eudes Thursday: St. Bernard
Friday: St. Pius X Saturday: Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
STANDING FAST
Matthew opens the scene in today’s Gospel by setting up a
conflict. Unlike the parallel story in Mark (7:24), the
woman is described as “a Canaanite.” This label serves to
evoke the ancient animosity between Jews and other
peoples in the region. The woman, who is never named,
begs for help for her daughter. The disciples are actively
dismissive of her, as a woman and a foreigner, and deem her
to be unworthy of their attention. The text suggests that
Jesus initially sided with the disciples. But then he
recognized the strength of her faith.
Many women, foreigners, or marginalized persons might
identify with this woman’s story. Sometimes faith means
standing fast, in care for others or in fidelity to truth, even
when it seems that no one supports you. Somehow, the
woman recognized God’s power and God’s care within
Jesus. And Jesus recognized that God was active within her,
manifested in her commitment to her daughter. Jesus saw
his Father’s larger horizon of care for everyone, Jew and
Gentile, within this faith-filled woman.
GRATITUDE O Thou who has given us so much, mercifully grant us
one thing more—a grateful heart. —George Herbert

Marks of the Church
The Nicene Creed was written centuries ago to help Christians remember the important beliefs of the faith. In the Nicene Creed we identify the four marks of the Church. The four marks of the Church are not characteristics that the Church creates or develops or learns. They are qualities that Jesus Christ shares with his Church through the Holy Spirit. The four marks of the Church are that it is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. Last week we looked at the Church as One and Holy. This weekend we will cover Catholic and Apostolic.
The Church Is Catholic
Catholic means “universal.” The Church is universal in two ways. First, the Church is catholic because all baptized people are part of the Church and the Church possesses the means of salvation. Second, the mission of the Church is universal because the Church has been sent to proclaim Christ to the entire human race.
The Church Is Apostolic
The Church traces its tradition directly from the apostles; therefore, the Church is considered apostolic. With the Holy Spirit the Church preserves and continues the teaching of the apostles. The pope and bishops are the successors of the apostles. ~Loyola Press
THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, for all life and all holiness come from you. In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the faithful departed, life has changed but not ended.
2020-2021 Religious Education Plan Students will be assigned to a "classroom" and have a catechist in place......just as if we were meeting at HJH. The catechist in your child's class will email the lesson for the assigned week and you will have the opportunity to share our faith and the lesson with your child in your home/domestic church. Each catechist...and I....will check in from time to time to see how we can be of help. Assignments will be emailed back to the catechist. You can pick up your child's materials on the Parent Pick Up Weekend, August 29th and 30th. You will then have your child's book from which to work. Remember....sharing our faith with our children is not the same as "teaching religion." Because we are Baptized Catholic Christians, we are called to be Missionary Disciples.....spreading God's Word. What a beautiful way to be a Missionary Disciple....to spread God's Word, share our faith in your own home with your children. Your whole family can build upon the foundation of our faith together. Please submit your registration forms. May God continue to bless your family in your Domestic Church, and our family in our Parish. Our Mother of Good Counsel, Pray For Us!
