Opened in 1902, Canobie Lake Park was known in its early years for its flower gardens and promenades. The Dancehall Theater played host to stars such as Guy Lombardo, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra. Today, the park’s splendid ride package includes a log flume, carousel, dodg’ems and a train. The ride of choice will be Yankee Cannonball, the ACE Roller Coaster Land-mark that opened with the park in 1936 (it previously ran at a park in Connecticut for five years). More recently, a new Gerstlauer Eurofighter, Un-tamed, has upped the thrill factor.

In 1902, a roller skating rink and a merry-go-round opened; from these two attractions would grow Palace Playland, a popular park in Maine that attracts many guests from Canada as well. There were challenges along the way. The “Great Old Orchard Fire” in 1907 destroyed much of the community and the resort. Storms and other, lesser fires also took their toll. The park’s two steel coasters, Galaxi and Orient Ex-press, top off the park’s assortment of rides and attractions.

In 1960, Ken and Violet Cormier opened the Mar-vel Drive-In restaurant, next to a miniature golf course owned by Ken’s brother-in-law, Andre Dallaire. In 1967, the two families formed a partnership. In the following decades, both families would open a series of businesses. In 1996, the Cormiers bought Dal-laire’s Cascade Water and Amusements and combined it with Funtown to create Funtown/Splashtown USA. Gal-axi, a steel coaster, opened in 1978; it was the only roller coaster in the state at the time. Excalibur, the only wood coaster in Maine, opened in 1998.

Many members can still remember the decades this park was simply known as Riverside Park. Throughout the 20th century, park guests enjoyed many coasters, including Thunderbolt, an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark. The new millennium brought about big changes. Ac-quired by the Six Flags chain, the debut of Six Flags New England saw a massive expansion of the park, including the Hurricane Harbor waterpark and the highly acclaimed Superman Ride of Steel. Now re-themed as Bizarro, the In-tamin steel coaster has been voted the Best Steel Coaster in the world for several years in the Golden Ticket Awards and should be a must-do on any enthusiast’s list. With 11 roller coasters, the park’s collection boasts a wide variety of manufacturers and two woodies.
