Reason for Version 2 of this Service Bulletin The initial issue of this Service Bulletin had incorrect Part Numbers given in the Parts Data table. Changes to this document have a black line against them in the left margin. Please destroy all copies of SB-04-0314 that you have and replace them with this Service Bulletin SB-04-0314V2.

    Reason for this Service Bulletin

It is possible for the top seal on some Sportspack suspension dampers to fail because of contamination from dirt. This can cause oil leaks from the top of the damper so that the damper becomes less effective. In production the damper has been changed for a different design by Bilstein to correct this. For Multimatic dampers, there is now a pressure relief washer available. The washer protects the top seal and can be installed on earlier Multimatic Sportspack dampers on vehicles in the VIN range shown above. All new Multimatic dampers will have the pressure relief washer installed.

If a vehicle comes to your workshop that has a leaking Sportspack damper, do the procedure that follows:

WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL BILSTEIN DAMPERS ON A VEHICLE THAT HAS MULTIMATIC DAMPERS INSTALLED. IF YOU DO, IT CAN HAVE A SERIOUS EFFECT ON THE HANDLING OF THE VEHICLE.

    Workshop Procedure

    1. Raise the vehicle and make it safe.

    2. Examine the four suspension dampers for oil leaks.

    3. Replace all suspension dampers that have oil leakage - refer to the Workshop Manual procedures that follow:

04.03.AB for the two front dampers 04.03.AE for one front damper 04.03.BC for the two rear dampers 04.03.BE for one rear damper.

    4. Do the all-wheel alignment check and adjustment procedure (refer to the Workshop Manual procedure 08.00.AD).

    Install the Pressure Relief Washer(s)

Do the procedure that follows on all dampers that do not have an oil leak.

    1. Move the gaiter (1) on the damper up to get access to the piston rod (2) (refer to Figure 1).

Figure 1 shows the damper with the wheel removed so you can see more clearly.

    Figure 1

    2. Install a pressure relief washer (1) on the piston rod of the damper (2) at the position shown in Figure 2.

The recessed face of the washer must face downwards.

    Figure 2

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE GAITER IS STRAIGHT AND DOES NOT HAVE ANY KINKS OR DENTS IN THE STEP THAT FOLLOWS. IF YOU DO NOT THE GAITER CAN CATCH ON THE SPRING AND BE DAMAGED.

    3. Release the gaiter and make sure it is in the correct position.

    4. Do a visual check to make sure that there is a washer on each of the four dampers on the vehicle.
